Domestic burglary is a nasty crime, it can leave victims frightened, anxious and afraid in their own homes. Some victims feel that they have no option but to move house to escape these feelings following a burglary. These feelings can be heightened if the burglary occurs at certain times of year, such as holidays, birthdays and around Christmas. As we approach Christmas it is a good time assess the security of your home. Check that your door locks comply with security standards BS 3621 for mortice locks and rim locks on wooden doors and either TS007 3 star or SS312 Diamond standard on Euro profile cylinders in upvc doors. It is heart breaking to read of burglaries occurring before Christmas with heartless thieves stripping houses of presents especially if children’s toys are taken. Upgrade your locks now to reduce the chances of becoming a burglary victim. If you have doors or windows that are particularly weak, replace the locks and consider fitting a locking device called a sashjammer. These can be fitted on inward or outward opening doors and windows. More information can be found on the website www.southyorks.police.uk

Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB

Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. Our Speakers on Monday 6 November were Dr Hugh and Judy who gave an audio visual presentation on Australia and South Africa, concentrating on the beautiful wild flowers which occur in those countries. This was a presentation in aid of Rotherham Hospice. On Monday 20 November, David Templeman’s subject was “Lady Arabella, the Queen who never was”. At one time it was thought that Lady Arabella might succeed Queen Elizabeth I. She was a great great grand daughter of Henry VII and had Stuart blood in her veins, but never aspired to the throne. Despite this, she ended her days in the Tower of London. Our meetings in December will be on Monday 4, when the guest will be Malcolm Barnsdale talking about “Old Doncaster”, and Monday 18 which will be the Members Christmas Lunch. At this latter event Alan Whitehall will again be regaling us with tales of Spike Milligan. Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Geoff Firth (01302 849734), David Allen (01302 885813 or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information.

Edenthorpe Women's Institute has just celebrated its 60th Anniversary and here are a few historical facts that may well be of interest to Readers of the ARROW. The Edenthorpe Women's Institute was formed in November 1957 and meetings were held at: St. Hilda's Church Hall which was in Cedric Road, Edenthorpe, Ridgewood Hotel, Edenthorpe, Edenthorpe Primary School, Hungerhill Comprehensive and today we all meet at the Community Centre in Edenthorpe. The first meeting was held on 18 December 1957 and it was given by Miss Ruslin on the subject of the Passap Knitting Machine. The First coffee evening raised £9.6s.0d in aid of WI Funds. The First Christmas Party took place in December 1958 and each member paid 2sh and also provided cakes and trifles. The First Members Night took place in September 1959 and a Mrs Corns arranged a discussion with a panel of teachers. Subscriptions in 1957 were 3sh 6d. Visitors were 6d. A cup of tea was 3d and each member was to bring two small cakes. Badges were 1sh 6d. The Competition was 2d per entry. Our Bring and Buy stall articles cost less than 1sh. The First Rally took place in June 1958 and Edenthorpe Women's Institute ran the kitchen stall and raised £3.13.4d. The following Events took place between 1958 and 1980 by which time now Edenthorpe Women's Institute was celebrating its Diamond Jubilee: Folk Dancing, Mystery Trip which took us to Nostell Priory, Comic Rounders, 'It's a Knockout'; Y.C.F.W.I. Jubilee dinner'; Visit to Harrogate Cavalcade of Costume; a Social evening for St. Catherine's Patients; Visit to York to see the Royal Wedding Gown on Display these are but a few of the events that were held and attended by the Edenthorpe Women's Institute at that Time. Achievements Made through WI Members. In 1963 a resolution was put forward at the council meeting that no charge be made on buses for pushchairs. This was carried, put into practice and is still in operation. A Zebra crossing was petitioned for to be constructed on Thorne Road, Edenthorpe and was successful. An anti -litter campaign for local children was organised. A 'bus service' was successfully pressed for Edenthorpe. Of course the Edenthorpe Women's Institute has had many Christmas Parties over the years. Some being very memorable - In 1983 which was our 25th Anniversary, we had our drama group act out 'A nice Rest'; in 1986 we had SIX in Harmony; in 1988 we have the Thorne Male Voice Choir and in 1990 the EWI had a Play put on namely 'Aladdin' these are once again just to name a few of the Entertainment activities that occurred during that time. Money Raising Activities came from: Coffee Evenings: Jumble Sales: Beetle Drives: Strawberry Teas: Cheese and Wine evenings. And Funds were raised by the EWI and proceeds were in aid of: Mentally Handicapped Children, Yorkshire Association of Cripples, Doncaster Talking Newspaper for the Blind; D.R.I Cot Death Appeal, Alverley House for the Disabled N.S.P.C.C. Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Diabetic Associate, Social Services, The Church of the Good Shepherd, once again this is just to name a few organisations that the EWI donated proceeds to. In our past years, we have also given our support to: The Firefly which is a local charity run by volunteers driving cancer patients to their treatment in various hospitals, Edenthorpe Allotment Association, Barnby Dun Show, Thorne Farmers Show, Playing Fields Association, Community Centre Building Fund, Lunches of Graham House Old Peoples Flats just to name but a few. Since 1985, the Edenthorpe Women's Institute won the Leger Group rounds of the DARTS competition eight (8x) (1985 to 1991) times and also the South Yorkshire cup (1x). Since 1988 the EWI also won the Dominoes Cup in the Leger Groups three (3x) times and they won the South Yorkshire Cup once (1x). From 1987 to 2002, Edenthorpe Women's Institute has always been in the top 5 taking part in the St. Leger Quiz. In 1987 Handcraft Show Edenthorpe Women's institute came Joint First in the Bulb Show. In 1989 Edenthorpe Women's Institute won the Handicraft Show 'Autumn'. These are just a few of the many many walks that the Edenthorpe Women's Institute have done and still do. Our walks normally take between 1.5 to 2 hours and this is followed by a welcome pub lunch . Since we oncemention again recommenced our annuals outings, these are but to name a few : Chatsworth, 10 1993Please “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements Burgton Agnes, Sledmere House, Brodsworth, 1999 Edenthorpe Women's Institute won the Handcraft

Show - 'Winter' In 2001 Edenthorpe Women's Institute won the Handcraft Show theme being 'Nursery 0 - 5 years. In 2004 Edenthorpe Women's Institute was awarded a Certificate for Winners of the Whiston Heritage Walk. In 2012 the Queen's Diamond Jubilee was celebrated at one of the member's home and this was very well attended, A lovely display of cakes and tea were had by the members who dressed in the red, white and blue colours. We have had numerous speakers which the EWI have thoroughly enjoyed, being - Stained Glass, The Chocolate Maker, the Candle Maker, Christmas Crackers; What the Butler Saw; A very interesting talk on the Mysterious Agatha Christie; a further interesting talk was given on Romans in Britain and a walk along the route of Hadrian's Wall by the same speaker; The following talk also proved to be very interesting which was all about the life of Elizabeth Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury (c. 1527–1608), known as Bess of Hardwick (neé Elizabeth Hardwick), of Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire, was a notable figure of Elizabethan English society. By a series of well-made marriages, she rose to the highest levels of English nobility and became enormously wealthy - once again these are just a few of the very interesting speakers we have had over recent years. Sue Taylor, one of the members of the Edenthorpe Women's Institute was invited to a garden party, held at the grounds of Buckingham Palace to celebrate the 100 years of the Women's Institute which was attended by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth and Princess Anne and many many other members of the various Women's Institute throughout the UK. OUR OUTINGS - once again here are but a few of them - Minton and Beswick Potteries; Lotherton Hall - Shirt Factory and Ripon, Doncaster Fire Station, Cheltenham and Glamis Mill in Huddersfield - Humber Bridge; Epworth, Oxford, Holy Island.; Yorkshire Dales - Silk Flowers Wickersley, Selby Abbey, Edinburgh, Chelsea Flower Show; Lake District and Trossachs, Chester, York, North Allerton and Kipling Hall, Wentworth Park, Over the past few years and which still carries on to date, the Edenthorpe Women's Institute have an activity in October what we call a DUTCH AUCTION, which is a fun filled evening, whereby the members bring items for sale. All these items are placed on tables. If you like a particular item, you would then bid for it and write down your bid which may be 50p and then someone else may come around and bid for the same item 60p, then again somebody who really wants the item that badly decides to bid £1. If nobody is willing to bid anymore on that particular item, the bid then goes to the highest bidder of £1. This goes on right around 2 very long tables. It gives the ladies much amusement and fun for the evening. There is a very big range of items that the members bring along. Attached hereto is a photo of one of the founding members of the Edenthorpe Women's Institute which was initially founded in 1957 - she is MRS JOYCE STEPHENSON who is pictured with our 60th Anniversary cake and without whom, we would not have been able to have given the Readers an insight to some of Edenthorpe Women's Institute history over the past 60 years. Joyce was also at one time the Treasurer for the Edenthorpe Women's Institute and until very recently was our Honorary Vice President of the Edenthorpe Women's Institute. The Edenthorpe Women's Institute celebrated the 60th Anniversary at the Mount Pleasant in Bawtry, Doncaster at the end of October. In conclusion, it should be mentioned that the Edenthorpe Women's Institute is certainly a group of ladies who will always make you feel welcome and perhaps the most important thing of the all is that 'You are never Alone' no matter To whatadvertise the circumstances are ALL there for another and for each other.11 please are'. callWe 07854 880882 orone 01302 351760 Thank you for your time. Mirjam Hirsch, Vice-President of the Edenthorpe Women's Institute

This handsome boy is Bandit, a 7 year old Border Collie who is looking for a new home as his owner is very ill. Bandit is a typical Collie- full of energy and bounce, and will need an active home with a garden to play football in! He does have basic training and will obey commands, but needs a bit of work on the lead. He is wary of other dogs and not good with cats, so best as the only pet in the home. We are told he is fine with kids aged 8+. Bandit is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you would like to meet this smashing boy, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.
