Community News Police Drop in sessions for Barnby Dun/Kirk Sandall. Wed 18th December 14.00-15.00 Assembly Hall (Meeting Room), Kirk Sandall. Graeme Duffin (Police, PCSO, Doncaster, East SNA)
Tots Play Classes for Ages 0-3 years. Auckley - Monday afternoon - The Zone, Hatfield - Wednesday morning - Victoria Hall. Armthorpe Thursday all am and pm - Armthorpe Community Centre. Edenthorpe - Friday morning Edenthorpe Community Centre At the time of writing this the area is in the middle of a crisis that makes cricketing issues pale into insignificance, The community response has been truly inspiring and we can only hope that when reading this things are beginning to return to some form of normality if that is at all possible after such devastating events. On to cricketing matters, and October was a big month for the club, following a thorough inspection of the clubs processes and a site visit on 25th July we received official confirmation that we have achieved our ambition of Clubmark Accreditation. Clubmark is a key indicator of a clubs ability to manage itself well and is able to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all, as evidenced in the below comment from the ECB Clubmark team. 'We are delighted to write and confirm that following a review of your ECB Clubmark file, your accreditation has been confirmed. Congratulations to all those involved at your club for this achievement and for all that they do to promote cricket locally. Having a network of safe, family friendly and well organised clubs is vital for the future of the game and achieving Clubmark status shows that you and your volunteers are at the forefront of this.' This is a landmark achievement for the club and we would like to thank all those involved at the club, we will of course, continue in our efforts to improve all aspects of the club on and off the field to maintain this status. The club are also proud to announce that Tommy Hyde has been elected as club captain for the 2020 season, and hopefully beyond. We are fortunate to have secured the services of a young ambitious captain who is looking to maintain and take forward the hard work that has been done on the field last season. Tommy is already looking at making a couple of signings to boost last seasons successful squad. Senior and Junior indoor nets have been booked to start in February in preparation of the season ahead. We will post timings for each age group in the January issue. The ladies team have been continuing to train on Monday evenings and have begun the indoor season in positive fashion, sitting 2nd in their league.
Wishing you all a safe and happy festive period from everyone at HTCC

The November Work Party on Quarry Park concentrated on replacing some oak trees on the 100 Oaks Route which had died during the hot periods this year. Initially to be carried out over 2 days it was decided to complete the work in just one session due to a bad weather forecast for the Saturday. This was made possible by the support from the Rangers at Sandall Beat who organised additional manpower from Warren House Park volunteers. It was a long but rewarding & successful session made easier with 17 volunteers. Sadly, this was the last Work Party under the guidance of Ranger Dennis Roe who has given us much support & advice over many years. Dennis was formerly thanked with tea & cakes of course; he will be greatly missed. Thankfully this is not the end of our support from Sandall Beat & we look forward to forging a new working relationship with his successor. The next Work Party will be on Friday December 6th, 10am to 12am meeting at the Green Flag pole. We would welcome new volunteers to help us on this beautiful site. As always, equipment & refreshments will be provided. Get in touch via The Friends of Quarry Park Facebook page or email thequarrypark@gmail.com & check notice boards for information.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests. (see www.probusonline.org/danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Seaton play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. On Monday 21 October, Dave Adgar, who in his spare time is Chairman of the Friends of Doncaster Museums, gave this very informative talk about life in the Old West Berlin before the fall of the Berlin Wall. It included the time before the Wallwhen Berlin became a divided city as a result of World War 2. Dave described how the City had been divided up between the Allies (some of them) and that the then USSR has not wanted France to be included, And the only way that they were was by the British giving the French some of their allocated territory. Dave spoke from experience, having lived in Berlin when he was a teacher to the children of Births Forces based there. This gave the presentation a distinct 'you were there feel'. This was a very interesting talk about a time when there was a very different political climate. The Ladies’ and Guests Lunch was held at the Old Bell, Barmby Moor on Thursday 24 October. It was a very enjoyable occasion as usual. Then on 4 November Mike Burdis (retired Chief Superintendent of Police in South Yorkshire) made a very thought provoking presentation about the “Stephen Lawrence Enquiry”. After outlining the facts about the murder of Stephen Lawrence, Mike then went into the details of the police investigation which followed and the mistakes which were made. Many of the mistakes were apparently because of poor recording of the information gathered and lack of communication between the investigating officers. Mike noted that the Yorkshire Ripper enquiry had highlighted similar shortcomings and it had said that police forces should adhere to a strict protocol when faced with cases in which lots of information is gathered. It appeared that these lessons had either been forgotten or ignored during the Stephen Lawrence investigation. On 2 December Jane Breach will be giving a presentation about Drax Power Sation and the Members’ Christmas Lunch will take place on 16 December, both at Town Moor Golf Club. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191221) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information.
Free music club announced for curious young people Young people aged 9+ are invited to join a free music club in Doncaster next month. The club, called Wednesday Music Club, invites curious young people to try something new and enjoy a wide range of activities, from songwriting to playing in a band. The club will then take place every Wednesday at The Point from 8th January, 4 – 5.30pm, during school term time. No experience is needed and you don’t need to know how to play an instrument. Musician, Dyzelle Sutherland said: “We can’t wait to meet young people from our local neighbourhoods in central Doncaster and from across the borough.” “Whether you are interested in music tech or just want to meet other young people who love music, everyone is welcome to join this friendly, free and inclusive music club”. Wendy, a parent who attended a music session at The Point over the summer holidays, said: “As someone who first language isn’t English, The Point was completely new to me – but I know it’s a great place for my children.” “It’s nice to know they’re doing something fun, and it’s definitely encouraged us to join one of the future workshops here.” To find out more about Wednesday Music Club and book your place, visit www.thepoint.org.uk/whats-on

Free Exhibition by Thorne Camera Club Members of the public are welcome at a free photographic exhibition organised by the Camera Club in Moorends Library from November 18th. The members work on their photographs all year, producing some excellent pictures, some of which are presented to judges and salons for their views. Now it’s your turn. Go along and see what you think, have a chat with some members, they are a friendly bunch. Talk about the images on display, about cameras, the camera club, or any other topic of conversation except Brexit! For inspiration and admiration, the work of visiting speaker Emma LittlefairShepherd was outstanding. A young, talented photographer-come-artist, her presentation ‘Pushing Photography to the Limits’ showed what, with skill, dedication and a large amount of imagination, can be achieved with digital photography. Verging sometimes on commercial work, sometimes on utter fantasy, Emma not only showed her work but showed some of her secrets too, and yet every element came from her camera. As a Mum with a family, a home, and a job, it amazed some members that she had the time, let alone the energy, to put so much into her photographic art. Professional Photoshop tutor, Ken Fisher, also paid a visit to the club. As requested by a member, he explained the use of both Lightroom and Photoshop CC. He was very informative and easy to understand, showing the basics as well as the creative side of digital imagery. Because a large number of members use either one or both of these, it was a very useful evening. The next most popular editing software, Affinity, will also feature at some point in the future. The latest competition held at the club was projected images with a theme of Street Photography. Some members relish this type of photography, getting candid shots of people and things happening out and about. Holidays and events are particularly popular, especially when ‘fancy dress’ is involved. Mostly, having got dressed up, people are quite happy to have their photograph taken. Graham Gage from Leeds was the judge on this occasion, and appreciated the efforts of club members who contributed to the competition. Of course, camera club members were out in force for the UCI cycle race which passed through the streets of Thorne, a once in a lifetime opportunity so close to home. New members are always welcome, so come along and see if you like it, free of charge. Or contact David on 07463821182 email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk
