Community News Pictures from Memorial Sunday courtesy of Mark Dinnage It was a lovely Sunny day with many people turning out to pay their respects.
DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is a group of men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. Recent speakers have included Denis Ashton who talked about the Apollo Programme to take men to the moon. Dennis has been a regular visitor over the past few years and as usual gave an enlightening presentation. Other presentations have included amusing anecdotes about funerals and support dogs. We have also had a Special General Meeting to discuss changes to the constitution and elect officers for the coming year. The decisions from this meeting will be reported next month. Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Geoff Firth (01302 849734), David Allen (01302 885813 or John Brown (01302 771602) for more information. After a successful final season in the Pontefract League which saw both teams reach their highest ever positions, including a runaway Division 4 title win for the 2nd XI and the 1st XI spending several weeks at the top of Division 1, the two captains have been reelected to lead the sides into the Yorkshire South Premier League. David Barrett will captain the 1st XI in Division 2 supported by James Winstanley and Paul Davies will lead the 2nd XI supported by Greg Fairhurst, they await confirmation of their league placing. Both teams know it will be a tough baptism but are looking forward to the challenge with confidence. After retaining the Evening League cup the Midweek XI will again be captained by Greg Fairhurst and the Sunday League side will continue to give many youngsters valuable game time under the captaincy of Danny Evans and James Winstanley. Indoor nets for juniors and seniors will commence on the 7th February at Trinity Academy, the age groups times and days will be confirmed in next months issue and announced on our Facebook page. The Women and Girls have started their indoor season and are currently training Monday evenings at Trinity. They have 2 teams entered into the league anyone interested in joining the training should ring Joanna on 07982 729749. Off the field the committee all remain in place as the last few years and will be looking at how we can improve our facilities despite the challenges Covid and the lack of available funding have brought. Stay safe everyone and have a good festive season!

From the Friends of Quarry Park: The Quarry Park volunteers met on Friday 5th November for the monthly work party. There were twelve of us plus the young son of one of our volunteers, who was such an enthusiastic helper! We also had support from two of the DMBC Countryside Rangers. The weather was kind to us and we had a very productive morning. One team tackled the car park hedge, which was badly in need of cutting back and another team worked on tidying up the clearing in the woods. Two of the volunteers did a litter pick, collecting two bags and a very old Council waste bin liner that had somehow found its way into the park. Last month, The Friends of Quarry Park celebrated their 25th anniversary with a Scarecrow Festival and BYO Picnic in the park on Saturday 16th October. The weather was perfect and everything seemed to go according to plan. There were 17 scarecrows entered in the competition and they were all absolutely superb. They turned up in wheelbarrows, attached to walking frames, sitting in chairs and sun loungers, propped up against stepladders and on bespoke frames. So much thought and creativity had been put in to every single one. Proceedings were formally started at 11:00am by Hatfield Town Council Deputy Mayor, Debbie Smith, who delivered the Opening Address and cut the ribbon. The number of visitors exceeded all our expectations, and everyone seemed to enjoy viewing the scarecrows and voting for their favourite. It was an absolute joy to see so many families enjoying the sunshine in the park, with quite a few bringing chairs and picnics. We had plenty of positive feedback about the event, which made the hours of planning very worthwhile! Voting for the scarecrows closed at 2.00pm with a total of 240 votes placed. It was a close call but Top Class, produced by DMBC Countryside Rangers, won 1st prize, closely followed by Betsy Ballerina built by Sue Teale Dancing; 3rd place went to the cute Minnie Aunt Sally by Tracy Sinott and 4th was Danny Dunn hailing from Dunsville Community Centre. The 5th prize went to Space Oddity by Amanda Lane. Congratulations to all the winners; we wish we could have given everyone a prize as they all deserved one. Thanks to Hong Kong Cantonese Restaurant, Coffee at Number 4, Natural England, Londis and Barrie Cars for donating the lovely prizes and our Chairman provided another two. All the children scarecrow builders received a prize too. Thanks also to Doncaster Town Councillor Hatfield Ward, Glynis Smith, for presenting the prizes and to the Countryside Rangers, Chelle and Louise, for their support. We also had some other good news during October as the Park was once again awarded a Green Flag for 2021 /22. The presentation was held at the flagpole on the Park on 14th October, with Nick Fletcher MP in attendance. The Friends are so proud to have been recognised again for all their hard work but couldn't do it without the amazing commitment from all the regular and ad hoc volunteers, all the DMBC staff who also work hard, cutting the grass, emptying the bins, doing the heavy maintenance plus inspecting and keeping the children's play areas safe, and the Rangers who support The Friends. Congratulations to all involved. The December volunteers’ work party will be held on Friday 3rd December. Anyone interested in coming along to help will be most welcome. Equipment is provided but it’s advisable to have sturdy footwear and gloves. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking to clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. We meet in the car park at the end of St Mary’s Road, Dunsville at 10.00am. For more information, please email us on thequarrypark@gmail.com or message our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’.

Barnby Dun Church This year we're on a mission to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to our community! 2021 has been so different. As a country we've dreamt of freedom, we've cried at loss, and we've longed for hope. This Christmastime you're invited to join us for the true story of God's Son Jesus who was born to bring us freedom, hold out comfort, and give us hope for eternity. That means we're putting on a range of Christmas services and events for all the family: there’s Carols in the Churchyard, a traditional candlelit service, a family Christingle, midnight communion & more. Have a look out for our Christmas cards and posters, and you're sure of the warmest welcome whenever you'd like to join us. DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST Here we are well into Autumn and we hope you are managing to keep fit and warm despite the colder weather. We have been in talks with consultants at Doncaster Royal Infirmary regarding our skin cancer appeal and we are thrilled to report that we have the funds to purchase a vital piece of equipment they need. It is a three-dimensional camera which will enable students in Doncaster (and potentially all over the world) to learn a new basal cell carcinoma technique via electronic communication. The technique involves excising the basal cell carcinoma and achieving a primary closure of the wound without the need for skin grafting. Doncaster is a centre of excellence for this procedure. In the whole country there are only three centres working at this level. The department would also like to buy smaller pieces of equipment for their work with skin cancers, so your donations will still help in this very worthwhile cause. We will let you know more about this in future publications. We are excited to confirm that, as mentioned previously, we can hold our Memory Tree event in Frenchgate Centre on the run-up to Christmas. This is where you can purchase a Christmas tree ornament in memory of a loved one. It will start on Monday, 29th November and will finish on Saturday, 18th December. Provisional times will be from 10am to 3pm each day. We have recently been informed by staff at Frenchgate Centre that many people were extremely disappointed last year when there was no Memory Tree. This was due to the fact that, because of Covid19, shops were only allowed to open as a last minute decision by our Government and rules were still very strict as to social contact. We were as disappointed as you, but like so many other organisations, we were faced by tough restrictions. However, we are back this year and hope you will come along to have a chat and see the variety of items we have for sale, some favourites and some new ones which we hope you will like. In the meantime if you would like to get in touch with us our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. Please do keep supporting us. We strive to raise money to purchase cancer-related equipment for our local hospitals which in turn hopefully helps improve the lives of local people and beyond. Our very grateful thanks to you all.
