Friends of Quarry Park Several months ago, we were asked if we could provide another bench for Quarry Park by a volunteer who suggested it for residents with mobility problems allowing them to rest on their way to and from the shops. Our Vice Chair Katrina got straight on the case and applied to Magic Little Grants via Localgiving for funding of £500 to purchase a bench and was successful. Magic Little Grants are funded by People's Postcode Lottery. A survey of residents who live in the vicinity was carried out and permission was sought from Doncaster City Council. All was agreed and the bench was ordered and collected within 6 weeks. The bench was installed by a small team of our volunteers one dry afternoon in October, who did a great job. Many thanks to Magic Little Grants, Local Giving, People’s Postcode Lottery & the Postcode Neighbourhood Trust for their generous grant for the bench which will benefit all Park users. Our Coffee Morning in Hatfield Library on 28th October was a great success and very well attended. The drinks and home-made cakes went down very well with everyone, as did the raffle with 24 fabulous prizes. There was also a great Chocolate tombola by the Cubs, juicy jams by Vera, plants from Friends of Jubilee Park, hand-made bird boxes, a Halloween goody bag from Community Wealth Builder, free books from the National Literacy Trust and jewellery from Friends of Hatfield Church Building Trust. Our volunteers did an excellent job raising over £300 for group funds. Thanks to all those who attended and supported us: Hatfield Town Council for a grant to fund the morning, Hatfield Community Library for hosting the event, and Sarah-Jane’s tearooms & Coffee lounge, Tesco, Edenthorpe and Dunsville Post Office for their fabulous raffle donations. It was a lovely sunny morning for our Volunteer Work Party on 3rd November, which made a welcome change from all the rain! We had 18 volunteers, 2 junior helpers and our Ranger Sam. We had a very busy session planned with the planting of 900 spring bulbs in St Mary’s Wood; along the railings at St George’s Avenue and around several of the benches. The bulbs were funded through the Earth Day grant in conjunction with Community Wealth Builder. We greatly appreciate this funding and look forward to seeing a colourful show of spring flowers next year. Our other tasks included strimming the grass and preparing the ground in the area where our new trees are to be planted; repairing the Church View sign with some new posts, and some hedge trimming. As usual, our army of litter pickers did a great job collecting 3 large bags of rubbish. Pete and Dan removed some wire fencing which was potentially dangerous. Refreshments were enjoyed at the end in the sunshine with Julie’s delicious banana cake and buns from Debra. A very successful morning, everyone worked hard to get the jobs completed. Well done to all. Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 1st December and Friday 5th January 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

THORNE CAMERA CLUB By the time this article is published, and unless there is a miracle, the Thorne Camera Club will no longer exist. The club was founded in 2013 by David and Lynda Ulyett who spent an extraordinary amount of time and effort in organising and finding funding to establish the club and to run it for eight years with the assistance of a committee. The club members are indebted them and all the committee members past and present who have given their time and effort in producing programmes and events to help members improve their photography. Any club that has a technical content such as photography requires dedication to the aims of the club by all the members and especially those who are elected to the committee to provide inspiration and leadership for the members and their photography, which is a difficult task and extremely time consuming and those that are elected deserve a vote of thanks. The club has held a number of exhibitions over the years at Thorne Library, Moorends Library, Hatfield Library and The Methodist Church Hall and thank them for their hospitality in hosting the events. The club extends thanks to two shops 'Bulls Eye' on The Green and 'Clippers' on Ellison Street who have displayed prints from our members in their windows for their customers and the general public to view. Finally and most of all the club wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the Arrow Publications for publishing the club's article each month for ten years - it was very much appreciated. The club's last DPI competition had very good response from the members with some excellent images. The competition was judged by a panel of members who had a hard task in selecting the winners who were 1st Jacki Greenwood with Red Retrieving, 2nd Terry Gunnill with 'Freyja & Volva' and 3rd Terry Gunnill with 'Gannet Landing'. The final competition at the club was an open print competition with the members provided nearly sixty prints for the judge Robert Helliwell to pass judgement. Robert provided an excellent critique on each print giving each author food for thought on their development for future photography. It was a difficult decision for Robert to make and his final choice of winners being 1st Allan Denby with 'Grass Snake' 2nd June Horbury with 'Reflections in Oporto Cruise Terminal' 3rd Allan Denby with Great Crested Grebe and 4th Bill Mitchell with 'Bus at nearly the Speed of Light'. In his summing up on completion of the competition Robert said he was very impressed with the quality of the prints submitted and to the actual printing of all of the images submitted – a compliment indeed for all of the members. Thorne Camera Club signs off and thanks the Arrow Publications and their readers for their support over the years.
