The Friends of Quarry Park

The Friends enjoyed a great session on the park for our November Work Party. 15 volunteers were joined by Ranger Sam and we quickly set about our tasks. A team of builders headed off to construct two bug houses using old pallets, straw and some natural materials gathered from the park. The team had lots of fun and did a great job. Hopefully we’ll attract some residents soon and receive some good reviews on Airbugnbee!! We were joined by Jamie, a photographer and designer working on a project for Doncaster Council producing some promotional material for Get Doncaster Moving. He got some great shots of our volunteers in action and was very impressed with our group and the work we undertake on the park.

Another group went to Warren Wood to continue our programme of woodland management. Overgrown brambles and shrubs were cleared from around the entrance to the wood and the steps. They also cut down tree branches alongside the pathway that were either dead or overhanging which prevents them being blown down and injuring someone. It has really opened up the entrance and made it more welcoming. The branches and vegetation have been piled up around the wood and these will be left to rot down and provide habitats for wildlife. Our tenacious litter pickers did a brilliant job collecting two bags of rubbish including the remains of fireworks on Quarry Hill and found a burnt-out mobility scooter! They also cleaned some graffiti from one of the information boards.

We ended the session with hot drinks and Hallowe’en muffins baked by Julie. Another amazing morning’s work by the volunteers.

Our next project will be the planting of 20 fruit trees which has been funded through the Environmental Pride Community Orchard Grant. Environmental Pride is led by St. Leger Homes and City of Doncaster Council and was established in 2022 to support community-led environmental improvement projects in Doncaster.

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, including litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 6th December and Friday 3rd January 10am – 12 noon, meet at the picnic table. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

Wow! Where has this year gone?

At the time of writing this we hadn’t started the Memory Tree. Please do pop along to see us in the Frenchgate Centre. We will be downstairs near Boots from Monday, 25th November until Saturday, 7th December (excluding Sunday, 1st December) from 10am to 3pm daily. You can purchase a token in memory of your loved ones and/or write a message to place on the Christmas tree in the Centre.

There is also the Charity Christmas Concert in Doncaster Minster of St George on Saturday, 14th December at 7.00pm. Once again the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers and Hatfield and Askern Colliery Band will entertain everyone, with the proceeds going to our charity. Tickets are £10, concessions £8, available from Co-op Funeralcare on Spring Gardens or any local Doncaster Co-op food store or Funeralcare branch office, or choir/band members. Tickets are also available on the door, but may be limited. Be sure to get your tickets early as this is a very popular event and last year there was hardly a spare seat!

Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (passageway to the right of “The Grumpy Goat Coffee House”), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk.
