Edenthorpe Resident of the Year 2018 Introduction : Last year saw the very first Resident of the Year award, which was given to Jen Oxley. Jen has continued to tirelessly work on planting around the village and is of course one of this year’s nominees. There were four other residents nominated this year, who have all contributed substantially in various ways for the benefit of the village. This year’s winner is

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS - GLYNIS ROBINSON

Glynis, became involved with the 47th Doncaster (Edenthorpe) Scout Group over 20 years ago, when her eldest son joined the Beaver Colony. She volunteered to become the Group Treasurer and then went on to resurrect the fund-raising activities undertaken by the Group. Over the years Glynis has helped raise a considerable income for the Group. Eventually relinquishing the role of Treasurer Glynis then become an Assistant Cub Scout Leader. A little later the Cub Scout Leader had to give up the position, Glynis very kindly volunteered to take on this role, and continues to fulfil this role with dedication and unbounded enthusiasm. The number of activities and camps (outdoor and indoor) has increased considerably over the years. Many families in the village will know Glynis as Akala and are extremely grateful for the experiences you have provided for their children. Congratulations Glynis, you are Edenthorpe Resident of the Year 2018. From all of us at Edenthorpe Parish council.

SUCCESSFUL EVENT Edenthorpe - Carol Singing 30th November 2018 What a very special evening we had on the night of 30th November, even the weather was kind to us after a particularly wet few days – This was our 2nd carol service and lighting of the Christmas trees on the War Memorial Green. Glynis Robinson (Resident of the Year 2018) very kindly switched on the lights this year. Thank you and once again congratulations on your award which you received for all your time, involvement and voluntary work for 47th Edenthorpe Scout Group. Local resident Tyrone Ali began with a few introductions and helped everyone to get into the Christmas spirit with his anecdotes. Reverend Steve Beck once again very kindly provided the PA system, song sheets and backing tracks, as last year he led the carol service with his humorous speeches. He gave his audience the opportunity to choose the songs from a mix of traditional Christmas Carols and Children’s Christmas songs. Local pupil - Olivia Ward (soloist) bravely opened the service by singing Silent Night beautifully. Olivia, thank you for taking time out of your show rehearsals to open the carol service. Donations were secured from many local businesses and residents. Those who donated, thank you so much, letters and thanks have been sent individually, they are numerous! I apologise if anyone has been missed but you can be assured that your donations were very much appreciated. I think I can say that everyone who attended the event (up on last year’s figures, probably 200 people), enjoyed the mulled wine, mince pies and the magical atmosphere. The very generous donations meant that everyone who attended was able to enjoy the evening with a mince pie in hand, mulled wine for adults, juice for under 18’s as well as sweets for the youngsters Thanks to Linda Lauri Ali, you were great collecting these and you also gave up so much of your time to help organise the event. Linda, you and your family are not allowed to move house! Steve Ward and his family added an extra special something to the night by setting up a snow machine. The youngsters absolutely loved this whilst singing Christmas songs. Last thanks go to everyone who helped out in any way, distributing song sheets, setting up, serving everyone -Last cheers go to Fred Gee and Paul Bissett for keeping the mulled wine flowing by warming in kettles. Edenthorpe what a lovely place we live in. I apologise if I have left anyone out of the thanks, but your help was much appreciated. Next year is booked so pop the date in your new diaries. We have once again gone for the closest Friday to December which makes next year’s date – 29th November 2019 at 6.30pm on The War Memorial Green, Hope to see you there. Edenthorpe Parish Council wish you all a healthy, happy and safe New Year.

Thorne Camera Club Happy New Year Everyone! End of year celebrations at Thorne Camera Club went well, with an invitation to Trefoil Guild members to join the fun, and judge two competitions. The Audio Visual consists of numerous photographs set to music and words, ranging from simple and straight forward to more elaborate. Several members had a go at creating one, and these were shown to the guests who chose their favourite. The winner, using a voting system, was ‘ In the Circles of my Mind’ by Graham Linley followed by ‘Clouds’ by David Ulyett . After festive refreshments, much relished mince pies and Christmas cake, the postcard competition was judged by Trefoil Guild. Members had been asked to make a representation of a postcard similar to the kind bought on holiday, and there were some excellent examples in varying degrees of creativity. The visitors were again asked to pick their favourite. This time the winner was ‘ Greetings Humans from the Animals of Woburn Safari Park’ by Lynda Ulyett. It was a very enjoyable evening to start the run up to Christmas. A social evening, with games in the form of a tombola, a quiz and bingo, was fun. Delicious pies and peas , from a local butcher’s shop, were served for supper, very much appreciated. It is possible to get too many mince pies and turkey at that time of year, so the steak pies, or cheese and onion, made a welcome change. Wath Salon is an exhibition organised by Dearne Valley Camera Club in Wath Library. Selection is from an entry of over 500 prints and digital images from all over the country. As in previous years, Thorne Camera Club was represented in the acceptances, as three members had a total of eight images between them, accepted and displayed, more than in previous years, showing the progression made by the club. Congratulations go to those members, David Ulyett, Lynda Ulyett and Lynda Rhodes. For the New Year, another non-turkey event was organised in the form of a fish and chip supper at a local Fish Bar where members, their family and friends, enjoyed a pleasant evening and Britain’s favourite dish. The talk, not surprisingly, was about looking forward to a new year, plans and resolutions, to the new Camera Club programme, and enjoying the hobby members all share, in a friendly atmosphere. The Spring Programme begins on 14 th January 2019. Why not go along if you have an interest in Photography, you will be made very welcome, Methodist Church Hall on Mondays at 7.15pm. Or contact David on 07463821182, Email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk
