FUNERAL DIRECTORS A Family Business Giving A Personal & Caring Service PRE-PAID FUNERAL PLANS covering all areas
The Friends of Quarry Park held a tiring but successful Work Party on Fri 6th Dec with 7 volunteers including 1 new person & 2 DMBC staff. Our main mission was to clip back the hedge along side the car park fence facing into the Park to keep a clear & open outlook. 2 volunteers also did a litter pick, collecting 3 bags of litter. After a welcome break at half time with hot drinks, biscuits & for an extra treat bacon & egg flan & apple crumbles with cream, our mission was complete with perfect timing as the rain started just after we’d downed tools! Many thanks to all our volunteers in 2019, we couldn’t do it without them. The Friends Group have also sponsored & decorated a tree in the St Lawrence Church, Hatfield Christmas Tree Festival which was open over 3 weekends in Dec with 29 real trees to view as well as all sorts of festivities to take part in. The theme was TV Programmes. We have decided to give ourselves a well earned break in January so our next Work Party will be in Feb on Fri 7th. Look out for car park news in the new year... Meanwhile please see our Facebook page & noticeboards for photo’s & updates. Happy & Healthy New Year to all Quarry Park users.

Indoor nets are booked and due to start in February, the large number of children and adults of all ages being catered for means we have booked 4 sessions per week. The allocated time for each group will be posted in the New Year keep a lookout on our Facebook page and February's issue for times and venues. The ladies are continuing their indoor season with success and are looking forward to finals day before moving onto the 2020 season, training has been hugely successful and they are hoping to field two sides in the forthcoming 2020 competition. 2020 will see HTCC be one of the ECB's approved 'Dynamos' providers which is an exciting new initiative for those 8-11 year old children that have outgrown All Stars, we will be posting registration details nearer the time. Thorne Camera Club On Show The free Exhibition currently running at Moorends Library has been well received, and showcases some of the members’ work. If you haven’t been to see it yet, there is still time before it moves on. Members are sometimes available to talk about the photographs, or you can view them at your own pace. There is a Christmas/Winter theme appropriate to the time of year. Current work by members went before a judge for comments recently. The theme of Farm Animals proved quite popular, mostly sheep, pigs and cattle with the odd hen and donkey thrown in. Monty Trent LRPS from Leeds had the unenviable task of selecting those he considered of merit, although everyone received praise and advice in equal measure. Violet Smith’s ‘Don’t tell Porkies’ followed by Michael Jackson, ‘Finger Licking Good’ and Mike Donnison’s ‘Gentle Giant’ were his choices. Highly Commended were Lynda Ulyett, Percy Johnson, and Colin Jarvis,(2). Commended were David Ulyett, Bill Mitchell and Terry Lockwood (2). In the Open section of the competition, Monty could not choose between four photographs, so declared them all Excellent. These were ‘ Sunset over Hurst Point’ by David Ulyett, ‘ High Roller’ by Colin Jarvis, ‘Skyrider’ by Jean Goodburne, also Norman Platts and Malcolm Hayes . Highly Commended were Malcolm Hayes, Lynda Ulyett, Mike Donnison, Colin Jarvis, Bill Mitchell, Norman Platts and Julia Jackson. Commended were Malcolm Hayes, Terry Gunnill, Jean Goodburne, Michael Jackson, and Mike Donnison. As well as competitions, which encourage members to get out and use their cameras, to think about how they take photographs and develop them using a PC, there are tutorials, and practical sessions, sometimes led by members, sometimes by visiting speakers. The use of filters in software was one such subject, and how some members enhanced their images with adjustments and manipulation. From the original image as taken with the camera, members explained how they processed through levels and curves, changed backgrounds by removing or adding elements, sometimes several times, using plug-ins such as Nik filters or Topaz ( there are others ) to bring out more of the colour, detail, texture and sharpness until the final image was presented. It was a very interesting and useful evening, as these processes usually occur at home where no-one else sees them. If you are interested in Photography and would like to go along to a meeting, don’t be shy. You will be made very welcome and you first visit is free of charge. DANUM PROBUS CLUB
danum probus.co.uk
Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests. (see www.probusonline.org/ danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Seaton play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. The Speaker on Monday 18 November Keith Lumley gave a presentation about the Normandy Landings which took place on 6 June 1944 entitled “Breaching the Beaches and Landings and Beyond”. This fascinating talk took us through the years of planning involved in the linvasion, not only the military operation itself, but also the huge amount of intelligence work done to wrong foot the Germans into thinking that the invasion would come at other locations. In addition to the invasion itself, Keith spoke about the Commanders, both military and political, on each side and how their own personalities had affected the result. He said that Eisenhower was selected as the Allied Supreme Commander not for his military virtues, but because he was a great diplomat who was able to get the “glory seekers” such as Patten and Montgomery to work together. Steve Parker and two of his colleagues took us through the history of Drax Power Station from its beginning as effectively two coal burning stations with three turbines each, to the ptesent day when it had four turbines driven by burning biomass to raise steam and two tuning coal when needed. The biomass mostly originates in North America, where waste timber eg branches, sawdust and thinning, material which was formerly burned to get rid of it. This is now pelletised and shipped to the UK, and then transferred by rail on a Just inTime basis. Development works taking place, along with Leeds University, into carbon dioxide capture. In January our speaker on 6 January is Roy Gunson with “The Uncertainty of Mr Heisenberg” the on the 20th we will hold our Annual General Meeting. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.

Doncaster arts charity receives generous donations from local supporters darts (Doncaster Community Arts) has received generous funding from local businesses and organisations, which will support transformative creative activity with Doncaster residents. The Doncaster arts charity, which is based on South Parade, have recently been given a number of new donations from Golder Associates, Rotary Club of Doncaster St. Leger and One Stop Shop Carriers for Causes. The funds will support a variety of creative programmes including All Aboard, darts’ programme for disabled children and their families which promotes independence, offers exciting creative activities and provides opportunities for children and young people to
express themselves. All Aboard supports over 120 disabled children and young people each year to engage in a wide range of art forms including sculpture, DJing, drama, drumming, music technology and visual arts. The Rotary Club of Doncaster St. Leger is supporting darts’ work around mental health. Engaging in regular, positive creative activity can have a hugely positive impact on people’s health and wellbeing and darts has many stories detailing how attending sessions such as Creative Directions has really turned people’s lives around: “I’ve tried Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, counselling, antidepressants and nothing has worked until now…this is the only thing that works for me.” Creative Directions participant. Sophy Sylvester, Head of Fundraising, said, “We really couldn’t develop and deliver the work that we do without the support of these fantastic funders. “They enable us to inspire, develop, captivate, empower and ultimately make a huge difference to people’s lives. “We’re very grateful to all three organisations for their support and look forward to building relationships with them in the future”.
