Huge Congratula ons go to Edenthorpe Resident of the Year 2017, Jen Oxley. Jen was presented with this new award at Park Social club after the Remembrance ceremony on Sunday 12th November 2017. Edenthorpe Parish Council wanted to thank Jen on behalf of the residents of Edenthorpe for all the hard work she has completed over the last few years. Jen has revamped many areas of the village transforming them into gardens. She has dug up weeds, nettles, litter picked, removed dog excrement left by unscrupulous dog owners and then replanted the areas, which has resulted in the transformation of Snickety Gardens, The Flower Plot, Crescent Gardens and the latest area – Growena Gardens. These were all previously an overgrown mess! Rosie Winterton, Fred Gee and Anne Flanagan presented Jen with a few gifts of thanks.

Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At the first meeting on 4 December we had the pleasure of listening to Malcolm Barnsdale telling us about Old Doncaster. This excellent talk was well illustrated with excellent photographs. We stared our journey in Old Rossington and gradually travelled northwards through Bessacar, the Racecourse and Town Moor, Benetthorpe, down Hallgate, into the Market Place, past Clock Corner, through St. Sepulchregate and finishing at the Railway Station. This was a presentation which brought back many memories and was well appreciated. On Monday 18 December members enjoyed their Christmas lunch at Town Moor Golf Club. Because the first Monday of the next year falls on New Year’s Day, there will only be one meeting in January on Monday 15, and this will be our Annual General Meeting. Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Geoff Firth (01302 849734), David Allen (01302 885813 or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information.

darts (Doncaster Community Arts) wins National Lottery support darts (Doncaster Community Arts) has received £25,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, Doncaster’s Cycling Stories. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project focuses on the borough’s historic relationship with cycling. From weekend road races to evening training rides, cycling has played a key role in the leisure time of Doncaster residents for hundreds of years. Doncaster has produced many successful cyclists in its history, including national and international champions, Olympians and Tour de France riders and the project will tell their stories alongside the many other local heroes who have contributed to Doncaster’s cycling heritage. The project will delve deeper to uncover hidden details and ensure that stories can be shared with a wide audience. A new film, designed to bring people’s reminiscences of cycling in Doncaster to life in a creative and engaging way, will act as a legacy of the project and ensure the stories uncovered remain accessible to future generations. A tour of the film will enable Doncaster’s cycling heritage to travel out to a wide range of community venues, ensuring that as many people as possible have the opportunity to discover Doncaster’s cycling past. Commenting on the award, Chief Executive Duncan Robertshaw said: “We are thrilled to have received support thanks to National Lottery players are confident the project will provide new opportunities for people to learn about Doncaster’s cycling heritage, inspiring greater pride in, and connection to, the local area.” David Renwick, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund, Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “Heritage isn’t just castles, museums and old buildings it’s also memories, traditions and the ways in which people lived in days gone by. A great example comes from Doncaster where, thanks to National Lottery players, an exciting project will give people the chance to share their cycling stories, new and old, and showcase a lesser known part of Doncaster’s heritage, but one that is particularly relevant given the boom of the sport in Yorkshire and beyond thanks to the Tour de France Grand Depart and subsequent Tour de Yorkshire events.” darts would love to hear from people willing to share their memories of cycling in Doncaster and would like to find out more about the family-run cycle shops, local manufacturers Uppadine and well-known local figures in the cycling community. Please contact Amy Knowles by emailing amy@thepoint.org.uk if you would like to help

Remembrance Sunday, Edenthorpe 12th November 2017; A sunny yet bitterly cold Sunday morning. Veterans all over polished their shoes, dusted off their medals, pressed their poppies and donned their berets ready to attend Remembrance services worldwide. Edenthorpe was no different, the second remembrance service to be held at the memorial. A dozen veterans from the community were invited to attend at Sainsburys Edenthorpe, for a special veterans breakfast provided by manger Phil, Gaynor and Sainsburys catering team. 10:40 am came and the lone piper Maurice Hunt warmed the reeds and played the sombre melodies. Edenthorpe’s 47th Scout group Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers marched up from the Church of the Good Shepherd lead by Rev Steve Beck and flag bearers. The community came and gathered in their hundreds to pay their respects to the six men Lickley, Moody, Gore, Chappell, Everett, Sillence and also to all who've paid the ultimate price. The service started with a role call of the six heroes named on the memorial. Prayers were spoken, Hayden 88 years old sounded the last post, flags were lowered to half mast and silence fell for two minutes. The community reflected and some shed a tear. Reveille broke the sillence and the Rt Hon Dame Rosie Winterton MP quoted the Kohima Epitaph “ When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today”. Prayers followed read by members of the community, family of the fallen and veterans. Wreaths were then laid, over twenty placed at the base of the memorials from all 3 armed forces, associations, volunteer services, local authorities and personal tributes from the community to those they wished to remember. Rev Beck reflected, the community committed and all were blessed. A beautiful service all round. The community paid their respects and moved off in many directions. Many attended Waggies for a welcome hot drink, a biscuit and conversation. Some ventured onto something a little stronger. Rosie delivered a speech thanking various locals such as Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waggies, 47th Scout group, Claire Scherer for the orders of service and Friends of the Edenthorpe War memorial for a special service. Next year is the 100th anniversary of the end of world war one and armistice day falls on the Sunday, we hope to see everyone again next year! David Milnes

Successful Event.

Carol Singing 1st December 2017. Edenthorpe Parish Council would like to give their huge thanks to all the businesses and individuals who kindly donated towards our first ever Carol service/ tree lighting ceremony on The War Memorial Green. Donations were received from Lidl (opposite Sandall Park)Tesco Edenthorpe, Sainsbury’s Edenthorpe, Asda (Bawtry Rd), Joanne’s Cafe Edenthorpe, Co-op (Kirk Sandall), Morrisons (Balby), Mr Hill and The Eden Arms. These kind donations enabled all who attended to be served with hot mulled wine or juice as well as mince pies and sweets for the children. We were blown away by the attendance figures, difficult to say, but there must have been in excess of 150 people on The Green. The atmosphere was buzzing, everyone chatting, singing and generally joining together as a community. Our very own Jen Oxley (Edenthorpe Resident of the Year 2017) switched on the tree lights to start our ‘Christmas in Edenthorpe’. Reverend Steven Beck from Church of the Good Shepherd was our leader in song, he also kindly provided the PA system, backing tracks and song sheets and was a perfect compère. Thank you also to Doncaster Ukulele Group, who played for us, giving us renditions of Winter Wonderland as well as many others. Thank you to everyone who helped, (you know who you are), especially Linda Lauri Ali and her lovely family who made posters, helped with the organisation of the event and served everyone on the night (whilst singing of course). The icing on the cake – not a scrap of litter was left by anybody! Next Year is booked so pop the date in your diaries. We have gone for the closest Friday to December which makes next year’s date – 30th November 2018 at 6:30pm on The War Memorial Green. See you all there. We wish you all a healthy, happy and safe New Year.
