Firstly, we hope you all had the best Christmas and New Year possible and here's to a better 2021 ahead for us all. Whilst Winter is a break for the those on the field, there has been no shortage of work going on behind the scenes. Our main priority is looking at our finances in order to assess what we can afford to do in order to redevelop our pavilion. From the high of finally having all the funding and planning in place in early 2020 and being ready to start the new build last September the Covid impact on our funding providers means we are now looking to see what can be achieved within the clubs own finances and hope to start some redevelopment in 2021. We have though managed to make one major improvement on the ground with a new artificial pitch in the process of being purchased and it should be laid ready to use when training for the new season begins. This will make a massive difference to the time and quality of our juniors practice sessions. We are committed to improving facilities for all those that use Carr Side Lane and this is the next step in that process. It is normally this time of year that we are publishing our indoor nets schedule for juniors, women and men. Whilst sessions are provisionally booked we are currently awaiting the latest government guidance before we know what will be allowed. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for further details once we are able to provide definite dates and times. All the best everyone and watch out for details of our 2021 fixture details in the February issue.
Zoom Results from Thorne Camera Club After online meetings and a photo shoot at Doncaster Aircraft Museum, the Camera Club held a competition. It’s not about winning, although that’s nice, but about listening to unbiased, independent, experienced comments, advice and suggestions to help us improve our photography. Ignore the advice or take it on board, that’s up to individual members, of course, but competitions are a useful tool, and another way of sharing images with members. Because of Zoom, judges come from further afield than is usually possible due to travel distances and costs. Closer to home, David Neve, a professional photographer from Brigg in Lincolnshire, agreed to judge the competition. No stranger to the Camera Club, after several visits, a return was requested by members who enjoy his style. He mainly photographs weddings, equestrian events and artistic and commercial work, regularly exhibiting his work worldwide, so has a wealth of knowledge to share. The competition, Open subject, was well subscribed with over fifty images. More than half the membership attended the Zoom meeting and found David’s comments, useful, unusual, and astute. In his view, the winning image was from Terry Gunnill, ‘Sunrise Coble’ with Michael Jackson’s ‘Harewood Deer’ and Bill Mitchell’s ‘Cusworth Hall’ runners up. Also Bill’s image ‘Foxglove - with Hangers on’ was Highly Commended. The standard of photography generally was quite high, resulting in fifteen images being Commended, from Terry Gunnill (2) ‘Dales Sunflower’ and ‘Dales Sunset’, Graham Linley ‘Solar Powered’, Michael Jackson ‘Height of the Season 2020’ , David Ulyett (2) ‘Nothing to Say after All these Years’ and ‘Big Seas at Seaham’, Lynda Ulyett ‘The Artist and her Work’, Jackie Woodward (2) ‘The Old Bridge’ and ‘Sunny Day at Brimham’, Bill Mitchell ‘Lone Tree Requires Similar to Form Forest’, Mike Donnison (2) ‘Reflections’ and ‘Goit Stock Waterfall’, Jean Goodburne (2) ‘Farmer’ and ‘Reflections’, Tom O’Shea ‘Baby Seal’. Many very good photographs didn’t make it into the second round but never the less were a credit to the photographer. Well done everyone. If you think you would like to join Thorne Camera Club, new members are still welcome in spite of the current situation, just contact David on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk for a free trial to see if it’s for you. Wishing you all a Happy New Years and hoping for a much better one in 2021.

Friends of Doncaster Museums Over the last few years, The Friends of Doncaster Museums have been building an impressive events calendar. Meeting once a month, on a Saturday morning, The Friends have welcomed a wide range of speakers, to well attended meetings. As well as local speakers, we have had several high-profile guests. Gervase Phinn, the bestselling author began these ‘special’ events in 2018. He has been followed by Joann Fletcher, the well-known Egyptologist who has presented a number of television series, Tracy Borman, author, television presenter and joint curator of Historic Royal Palaces and Carenza Lewis, prominent archaeologist, who was one of the stars of the long running Time Team series. In 2021, the programme will include an illustrated ‘Walk along the River Don’ and a much-anticipated talk by art historian Rachael Holland Hargreaves on the Staithes Group, otherwise known as the ‘Northern Impressionists. Travel across the globe and mention Doncaster and two things will come to people’s lips. To many, the town is synonymous with horse racing, with the St.Leger meeting being one of the highlights of the flat racing season, as well as showcasing the oldest classic race in the world. To others however, Doncaster is the place where the steam locomotives Flying Scotsman and Mallard were built. But the association between the town and these iconic engines was not predetermined. At one point, the Directors of The Great Northern Railway were considering Grantham as the centre of their operations; Doncaster could have been just another stop on the railway journey from London to Edinburgh. Early in November 2020, The Friends of Doncaster Museums were informed of an object coming up for auction in London which marked the decision to develop the Great Northern railway hub in Doncaster. In 1846 each railway being developed needed an Act of Parliament to allow it to go ahead. The solicitor Robert Baxter was tasked by the Directors of the GNR to oversee the passage of the Bill which would establish the train company and firmly establish it in Doncaster. He did so and as a result the Mayor, Corporation, and leading citizens presented him with a handwritten testimonial decorated with his coat of arms and encased in a leather folder. The Testimonial thanked Baxter for his efforts; for Doncaster the rest is part of railway history. It was this object which was successfully acquired at the auction. Originally part of the ‘Sir William McAlpine Railway Collection’, the unique object will remain in Doncaster in perpetuity. It is very fitting as Sir William, in 1973, had purchased the Flying Scotsman itself to ensure it would remain in the UK. Thanks to money raised by the Friends of Doncaster Museums and the partnership of The Friends of Doncaster Mansion House, the Testimonial will enter the collection of Heritage Doncaster and in due course will be on display. If you’d like more information about becoming a member of The Friends of Doncaster Museums , please contact chair@friendsofthedoncastermuseums.co.uk The Friends also operate a Gift Membership so if you’d like to mark someone’s birthday or simply want to send family and friends a Christmas Gift, please contact us on the same address.
