DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST It is 14 months since we have been in touch with you and we sincerely hope you have all managed to stay safe and well. We have continued to work behind the scenes on your behalf, albeit on a reduced basis. Your donations still kept rolling in thankfully and some organisations have also been fundraising on our behalf for which we are extremely grateful. As a result we are thrilled to report that we have been able to purchase the biopsy machine for the Urology Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary! It has taken quite a lot of organising during the pandemic which is why we have not been able to let you know before now. The official handover and photoshoot will be on 22nd June, after which we will put all the information on our website. We must say a very special thank you to one of our volunteers, Jenny Liddle, who has been our main contact with DRI regarding the biopsy machine. She has put in a tremendous amount of time and effort, all while dealing with a very serious family illness. We would also like to thank each and every one of you who has contributed in any way towards our prostate cancer appeal. It has been such a strange time and has been difficult at times for everyone, but we are so very grateful for your support. If you would like to get in touch with us our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. In next month’s issue we hope to launch our new appeal, so please look out for our news then. It is so good to be back again in print!

Friends of Quarry Park Friday 4 June saw our volunteers meet for their monthly work party under blue skies and welcome sunshine to take part in the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean. This was the 6th consecutive year that our group have taken part and there was a record turnout of 19 volunteers, including some new faces. They were supported by 4 members of DMBC staff who ensured the session complied with Covid guidance and that everyone was working safely. Splitting into pairs the volunteers covered the whole of our extensive site in the morning’s session ensuring all corners were left spick and span, 25 bags of rubbish were collected. To mark Volunteers Week 1-7 June Chairman Katrina O’Halloran posted on our Facebook Page “a huge thank you to all our volunteers previous and current for doing such a wonderful job keeping Quarry Park tidy, safe and litter free and to those who keep the admin of the group ship shape behind the scenes plus those who participate on a daily ad hoc basis”. In the 25 years since the “Friends” first came together many people have been involved, making a difference, and helping to shape the Quarry Park we all know and appreciate. To keep and maintain this legacy we would be delighted to hear from new people willing to step up and help as some of our members wish to retire. Plans are moving ahead with installing an additional bench on Quarry Park, sited not too far from the Car Park, to help those less mobile to take a break or sit and appreciate a view of the Park. This has been possible thanks to funding from the DMBC Ward Councillor’s Grant with a top up from Doncaster Rotary St Georges. We are extremely grateful for their assistance. The bench will also serve as a memorial to everyone affected by Covid 19 including NHS and all other frontline workers and will have a plaque to that effect. It will also be a reminder of the many ways in which Quarry Park has had a positive effect on the physical and mental health of the many visitors during the pandemic. We now have a provisional date for our Annual General Meeting which will be Wednesday 21 July at 7 p.m in the Methodist Church, Greens Road, Dunsville. Further details will be published nearer the date Our next Volunteer Work Party will be on Friday 2 July, meeting in St Mary’s Road Car Park at 10 a.m If you want to get involved or find out more about the Friends or Quarry Park please email us on thequarrypark@gmail.com or message our Facebook Page “Friends of Quarry Park”. Janice Bewley, Secretary, Friends of Quarry Park.

darts secures Youth Music funding darts has been successful in its bid for three years of Youth Music funding to continue its music and Makaton programme in Doncaster Special Schools. Professional musicians will create music making opportunities with Disabled children and young people that build choice, voice, independence and confidence. Young people will take the lead, designing their own mini-projects and coming up with new tracks, podcasts, radio shows or musicals. There will be lots of performance opportunities in partnership with Doncaster Music Education Hub so that parents, carers and families can see the young people’s talent and progression. This project is supported by Youth Music, using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Youth Music is a national charity investing in music-making projects that support children and young people aged 0-25 to develop personally and socially as well as musically. darts’ Assistant Director, Helen Jones says “Disabled young people in Doncaster want opportunities to develop their musical, social and life skills. We know that by using music and Makaton, young people can make huge steps with their confidence, musical ability and independent thinking. We are so grateful to Youth Music for supporting this vital work.” darts will be collaborating with Doncaster SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities) Forum to design and develop this project, meaning that ten Disabled young people will be involved in ensuring that the project meets local needs. To find out more about darts’ work, go to the website www.wearedarts.org.uk and sign up to the e-newsletter or contact hello@wearedarts.org.uk

Plans at Thorne Camera Club As a Camera Club, we have skills and equipment to record life around us, happy or sad occasions, adverse situations such as we are experiencing at the moment with the Covid 19 virus, and all the good brought out in people during these times, whether it be raising funds for good causes or helping neighbours with their shopping. With this in mind, the club thought it would be prudent to have a record of life over the last year and hold an Exhibition themed 'Covid 19' covering all the aspects of events and situations encountered through 'lock-down' periods, wearing masks, social distancing, social gatherings, appreciation of the medical staff and all other key workers with the 'Thursday Evening' applause. Also while our lives have been affected in many ways, 'nature' continues it's progress through the seasons, therefore some of the images by the members will reflect their thoughts around this. The Camera Club does not have a venue at present for an Exhibition with all images displayed together, so, exploring other possibilities, it was decided to approach shops in The Green and Finkle Street to allow us to exhibit our images in their windows. Thankfully we have had positive results. So watch out in August as you are out and about shopping in Thorne for the Camera Club members’ interpretation of the events of the past year. On a glorious, sunny day four members arrived for a photo shoot round the city walls of York . Viewing the walls from the road, they don’t appear very high but once up the steps to the walkway you realise how high they are. The area of York viewed from the starting point up to Micklegate Bar is mainly domestic dwellings, not very historical, except for St. Mary's Convent on Nunnery Lane. After, there are excellent views (all well photographed before) of the Victorian Railway Station, Station Hotel, and York Minster towering above all other buildings. This section of the wall walk ends at the Tower of North St. Postern, close to Lendal Bridge with photo opportunities for the Lendal Tower and the Guildhall. Approaching lunchtime, a member recommended a sandwich shop and lunch was taken, together with a well deserved rest, on the grassed area in front of the Minster along with many other visitors to York. Lunch over, fully rested, the walk continued to the Minster and Dean's Park and round the exterior of the Minster visiting the masons yard and St William's College. A visit to York would not be complete without photographing the Shambles and adjoining streets and market. The visit concluded via Coppergate which completed a well worthwhile day.
