Community News The Parish Council of Barnby Dun with Kirk Sandall The Parish Council of Barnby Dun with Kirk Sandall put on a free Platinum Jubilee event for all residents of the two villages to attend on Thursday 2nd June 2022. Held at the Parish owned Recreation Ground, the weather was superb the entire day and the event was opened by Tom Read (leader of the Doncaster Methodist Church) and Tom Brown (vicar of St Peter and St Paul's church in Barnby Dun). There was live music, a funfair, food & drink and homemade cakes, the lighting of a beacon to coincide with the National Beacon Lighting Ceremony and the evening was finished off with a spectacular firework display. Local crafting groups 'The Craft and The Curious' and the Barnby Dun TARA group provided crocheted and knitted bunting that adorned the entrance to the ground and within the community hub and local scouts and the local ATC corps marshalled the event to ensure that this was truly a community event. Proceeds from the sale of tea, coffee and cakes no deduction was made for ingredients, resulted in £340 being donated to the local Firefly charity.

Barnby Dun with Kirk Sandall Parish Council Barnby Dun with Kirk Sandall Parish Council wanted to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee by presenting school children attending schools in the two villages with a commemorative medal. The presentation at Barnby Dun Primary Academy was made on Monday 23rd May by Councillor Cave and Councillor Clayton and the presentations at Kirk Sandall Infants School and Kirk Sandall Junior School was made on Wednesday 25th May by Councillor Nevett and Councillor Needham. This kick started the celebrations in the two villages which culminated in a free event on Thursday, 2nd June, at the local Recreation Ground that included a funfair, live music, the lighting of a beacon to coincide with the national beacon lighting event and ended with a spectacular firework display.
The Craft and The Curious group, who meet in the Eden Arms, Edenthorpe, created lovely crocheted items to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee that have adorned the two villages of Edenthorpe and Kirk Sandall. New members are always welcome. Contact Lucinda via email at craftandthecurious@gmail.com

Friends of Quarry Park It’s been a busy time for the Friends of Quarry Park. We held our Annual General Meeting on 30th May. This went very well and we had a good number of people attending, including an impromptu visit from HM Queen Elizabeth, who popped in just before her Platinum Jubilee Celebrations! Unfortunately, there has been a number of cases of vandalism on the park recently, with fires being started and benches damaged or destroyed. This has been reported to the appropriate authorities and we continue to monitor the situation. Hopefully it is just a one-off occurrence by a small minority and will not lessen the enjoyment of the many people who visit the park. There is now a Community Planter installed on High Street, Dunsville, outside the Londis store. The Friends have agreed to maintain this ensuring it is kept watered and weeded and generally looking smart. Our monthly Volunteer Work Party took place on Friday 10th June. A week later than normal due to the Jubilee Bank Holiday. It was a beautiful, sunny day and we were joined by 2 new recruits. There were 13 volunteers in total along with our DMBC Ranger, Louise. There was plenty to do, the Orienteering Posts were badly overgrown so needed trimming and tidying up, ready for people to use during the Summer. The two sets of steps were also weeded and trimmed, along with some of the benches and information boards. We stopped for refreshments at 11, when we enjoyed cake supplied by one of the volunteers. After our break we started cutting back the overgrown vegetation around the car park and near the Post Office. Litter picking was also done, gathering 5 bags of rubbish including a broken sink that had been dumped!

All in all a very successful morning thanks to our amazing volunteers. Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next event is scheduled for Friday 1st July at 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

THORNE CAMERA CLUB We have had a fine choice of speakers throughout the year and this continued with our latest speaker David Couldwell. David, a motor sport enthusiast, presented a varied selection of images in which he described some as a fluke and some as flawed, hence the title of his talk 'Fluke and Flaw' but many photographers in the club would wish their images were as good. As well as producing excellent images David had his own thoughts on the mounting and presentation of images in which he mounted images in away he viewed the scene prior to taking the shot and also produced images mounted in various shapes and sizes. Following our guest speaker, we had a members presentation evening. The images shown by the members covered a wide range of subjects and included images that formed a 'Panel' which two of our members gained a qualification from the Royal Photographic Society. The last Print Competition of the spring programme was a 'Knock Out' competition where the members voted for each image until the winners and other placings were found. The competition had both a theme ' Distortion' and Open sections that provided some outstanding images. The members choice from the entries were for the Open Section, 1st Golden Arch, 2nd Pink Chair, 3rd Messing About in Boats and highly commended 'Gordale Scar' giving a clean sweep for Terry Gunnill – well done Terry! The theme section results were 1st Colin Jarvis with 'Fountains Abbey', joint second Bob Allen with 'Travellers' and Trevor Holt with 'Ribblehead Curves' and highly commended Bill Mitchell with 'Theory of Relativity'. Thorne Camera Club's Exhibition is now at The Thorne Library and will be open until the 14th June 2022. All are welcome to view the excellent display of the member's photographs of Flora &

Fauna, Portraits, Sports and Landscapes etc. All photographers whether beginners or experienced are welcome to join the 'Thorne Camera Club' on Monday evenings at 7.15 pm at the Methodist Chapel Hall at the start of our Autumn Season in September. For the full details our meetings, please email Terry at cameraclubthorne@gmail.com MONTY'S MONTHLY TIP Wide-angle lenses are preferred for landscape photography because they give a broader view and a greater depth of field. Set your camera to aperture priority, set at f/16 which will make both the foreground and background sharp. Set the ISO as low as possible and a slow the shutter speed. The use of a tripod and remote switch is recommended for slow shutter speeds. Do not be satisfied with your first image, try some different angles and positions for your image – a different perspective gives a different image!
