Edenthorpe Community Centre
If you haven’t tried indoor short mat bowls, maybe now is the time to give it a go? Edenthorpe Community Centre (Cedric Road) has the perfect place for you to try it out.
There are two groups that play there, Wednesday and Thursday mornings - the Thursday group is particularly looking to introduce new players to the sport. All the equipment is provided, you just need to bring some flat, indoor shoes to play in, so you don’t damage the mats. At only £2 a session it’s great value.
Bowling is a great sport for enabling all manner of disabilities to participate in an activity that encourages movement, coordination, motor, psychological, physical and social skills. It also helps in developing selfactualisation – confidence, persistence and a positive attitude. Importantly, it helps to prevent social isolation by providing a focus for group interaction and friendships.
Adey is testament to all the above! Having survived a stroke 10 years ago, Adey is limited in the movement down his right side. He took up bowling several months ago and is doing marvellously! His eye to hand coordination has improved so much – he regularly hits the ‘jack’!
Adey started off by using a ‘pusher’ to aid his balance. He now bowls with his hand. Progress indeed.
Give it a try? Contact Julie on 831252 or Sandra Crabtree via Facebook.

Friends of Quarry Park
We had a brilliant session on Friday 7th June with our amazing volunteers and Rangers Sam and Leon. There was plenty of jobs to do so we split into groups and got started. The Council were there too cutting the grass, so the park was a hive of activity.
The litter picking team set off to do their stuff and collected a large bag of rubbish, parts from a burnt-out motorbike and a bicycle! The team reported that the amount of litter was much less than usual which is a positive sign. Let’s hope it continues. The council have provided dog poo bags for the two stations located near the woods and the post office path entrance, which the Friends are keeping replenished. Hopefully this will encourage more owners to clean up after their dogs.
A new bench was installed in a clearing near Warren Wood which was tried out and approved by a lady walking her dog. The weeds and nettles were trimmed back on the Greens Road steps, around way marker posts and in the car park. All the vegetation is overgrown following a very wet Spring, but everything looks healthy.
We installed a new sign to mark our copse of trees that were planted last year. The trees were generously funded by Vulcan Renewables through their Community Fund, and the sign was made by our very talented Ranger Leon. We think it looks amazing!
Another job was making a start laying ground mesh underneath our new picnic table to protect the ground from erosion. Additional mats will be laid creating a link to St Mary’s car park pathway enabling easier access.
After a busy couple of hours, we enjoyed refreshments in the sunshine with delicious strawberry cakes from Julie.
The Friends of Quarry Park were recently nominated for an award in the Environment category of the Hatfield Town Council’s ‘Pride of our Area’ Awards. We are very pleased and proud to have won this award in recognition of the work our volunteers do. Huge thanks go to the committee, volunteers, rangers and everyone who supports us. A reminder that our Annual General Meeting will take place on Monday 17th June at 7.30pm at the Flarepath, everyone welcome. We will also be holding a coffee morning in aid of group funds, at Hatfield Library on Saturday 27th July 10am – 12 noon with other community groups taking part. This will be partly funded through a generous grant from The Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s, for which we are extremely grateful.
Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, including litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 5th July and Friday 2nd August 10am – 12 noon, meet at the new picnic table. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

Mothers' Union Barnby Dun
A Rally is to be held on the lawned area at Doncaster Minster on Saturday 27th July from10:30am till 2:30pm.
There will be many stalls, raffles and refreshments. 'The Literacy Trust' will give storytelling sessions and give out childrens books. The event will be opened By Sophie, The Bishop of Doncaster, and we hope to have entertainment by a local band. Mothers' Union is an organisation that supports families; we help vulnerable people to have well earned holidays, and support victims of Domestic Abuse. There is a lack of literacy skills in South Yorkshire, so we have a project called 'Read out Loud' to ensure that as many children as possible receive a book to call their own. We have been encouraged by 'The Literacy Trust' and Her Majesty Queen Camilla, and we have already given books to the Women's Refuge and to over 30 children in the community.
We support many projects worldwide with our fundraising events, but Christian fellowship is as important, so we enjoy fun and laughter too, so do join us on Saturday 27th July (if very wet we will be in the Minster)
For more information contact 01302882637, or Mothers' Union website.

Doncaster HF Rambling Club is an independent walking club which strives to provide its members with opportunities for the healthy enjoyment of the countryside in a spirit of friendship and fun. We organise three grades of walks to suit all abilities every four weeks on a Sunday, visiting a wide range of locations, travelling by coach from a number of pick-up points around Doncaster. We are a friendly group and always welcome new members. We offer anyone interested in joining us to come along on two walks as a guest before committing as a member. The cost of the coach fare is £15.
Our latest walk was from Ashford in the Water in the Peak District which, despite the poor weather, was enjoyed by us all. Our trip coincided with this years Well Dressings and the Flower Festival in this lovely village, as well as refreshments in one of the two pubs, café and Community Centre when we met up at the end of the day.
On June 23rd we did our annual Coastal Walk along the North Yorkshire Coast walking South from Scarborough, and taking in Muston Sands further South. It ended with us all meeting up inland at Hunmanby for the journey home.
Full details of our club and what we have to offer can be found on our website: www.doncasterhframblingclub.org.uk
Our next walk is July 21st in Buxton Derbyshire.,
