Local charity welcomes grant to engage people with dementia through music darts is celebrating this week after receiving a grant to expand its musical services for people living with dementia. The money will enable the Doncaster-based charity to create a series of new CD newsletters to be delivered in person, with musical activity on people’s doorsteps. It will also provide a welcome opportunity to engage with people with dementia and their families across the Doncaster borough so they can join darts’ regular Singing for Memory group and activities at The Point. Doncaster residents sing with darts musician, Janet Wood at one of the Garden Gigs The grant was received from Music for Dementia’s Paul & Nick Harvey Fund, which was set up specifically to directly support musical activities for people with dementia*. darts is planning to provide CD players and DVD players to those who are already part of the Singing for Memory group, to increase access to musical activities and to connect with other members of the group. darts is also looking for new members to join the Singing for Memory group – this is open to any Doncaster resident with dementia or memory loss and their family carers. Music for Dementia is a national campaign calling for music to be made accessible for everyone living with dementia. Music has a valuable role to play in enhancing quality of life for people living with the condition, and their carers. Research and lived experiences show that it can help reduce the often-distressing symptoms of dementia, such as agitation, apathy and anxiety. Although darts’ building, The Point, has been closed since the first lockdown, the Singing for Memory sessions moved online and there are lots of downloadable videos and activities on the darts website – www.wearedarts.org.uk. darts musicians also took their sessions on the road and delivered a number of Garden Gigs last summer with singer, Janet Wood. Small, socially distanced and Covid-safe sessions will be starting at The Point again soon – contact sophie@wearedarts.org.uk for details. Grace Meadows, Programme Director for Music for Dementia, said: “We are so delighted to be able to support darts and others across the UK with a grant from the Paul & Nick Harvey Fund. Musical services have been severely impacted in the last year, meaning many people living with dementia and their carers have lost those important connections and special moments that only music can provide. “By directing the fund money towards community-based, musical services for people living with dementia and those that provide them, we are able to bring the joy of music into people’s lives wherever they are on their dementia journey.” Cara McAleese, Project Manager at darts said: “This funding is vital for us to stay connected with our Singing for Memory group as well as to attract new people to the group who can benefit from the musical activities we provide. The pandemic has been so challenging for our participants with dementia and their family carers and this will help them feel more connected and improve their wellbeing.” If you or someone in your family is living with dementia and would like to hear more about the project, please contact sophie@wearedarts.org.uk or phone 01302 341662. * This fund was made possible by a kind donation from The Hunter Foundation to Paul & Nick Harvey who passed the money to The Utley Foundation for Music for Dementia

Thorne Camera Club Out and About Again It was with great relief that March 29th finally arrived, giving members the opportunity to meet up again, albeit in small groups. Following social distancing guidelines, a walk along the canal bank was organised. Although a bright, sunny day, a cool wind was blowing, calling not only for coats and scarves, but fast shutter speeds. How lovely to see people again in the flesh rather than on Zoom, and a lot of chatting and catching up took place as well as some photography. Quite a few other people were about, on the bank and on the boats alongside, as Spring and the glimpse of freedom brought them out. The walk was necessarily divided; as some members couldn’t go all the way to the Moors Bridge, leaving the rest at Wyke Gate Bridge to head back into Thorne. A challenge was laid to photograph the first bridge and compare results. Six very different pictures came from it, we all have different styles and different ideas. There was another visit via Zoom for Caroline Preece LRPS, who was invited to judge a competition again as members thought she did a very good job last time, especially the winners !! Her friendly nature and constructive comments , together with her annotation pen, made a pleasant evening and helped members improve their photography. This time her choices were ‘Purple Petals’ by Mike Donnison, ‘ Misty Morning’ by Mick Farrand and ‘White Water Rafting’ by David Ulyett’ . Highly Commended were Patricia Woodward, ‘ A Watchful Monkey’, David Ulyett ‘Window Reflection at Maldon’, and Mike Donnison ‘Tulip Twirl’ with Commended for Lynda Ulyett ‘ Window Dressing’ Mick Farrand ‘ Tide and Tyne’ and David Ulyett ‘ Stylised Quayside’. On another occasion Zoom was used to hold a Members’ Forum, when a discussion about the club was both lively and interesting. No progress was reported on the eventual face to face meetings, autumn being the most likely time. Other issues were discussed, one being how to cater for beginners new to photography as well as the more experienced keen to progress further. This is always a dilemma, with various possible solutions which other clubs have tried. One thing that was agreed is that, as a camera club, members should always be taking photos and presenting new work, especially now as the situation eases.

Friends of Quarry Park St Marys Road Car Park has now reopened and was the meeting point for this month’s volunteer work party. There was a great turnout considering the poor weather forecast with 13 volunteers, including 3 new members, supported by 2 Countryside Rangers. The hail near the end of the session did not put off our intrepid volunteers who worked on to finish their tasks! The new volunteers, who are regular users of the Park, enjoyed the morning’s experience and will be coming along again. The group split into 3 with the main group in the woodland cutting down and clearing 10 dead oaks of varying sizes near one of the paths, which was closed temporarily for safety. One of the trees was around 25ft tall and leaning over the path, hard hats were needed! The Rangers ensured that all work was carried out safely and the extra pairs of hands helped in cutting up and clearing the dead branches. They were stacked in the woodland to let nature take its course with fungi, bugs and insects making use of them. The other 2 groups weeded and cleared the two sets of steps and carried out a litter pick. May has seen a change in the predominant colour on the Park with bluebells being the main attraction of the month alongside the new green growth. The Big Bluebell Plant of Autumn 2017 will be long remembered and was a great community effort. The 7,000 bulbs planted have yet to spread and form the complete carpet of blue envisaged but they are still a delight to see. The wild garlic planted at the same time also suffered from the following dry summer so is only making slow progress. It is important that these “wild” flowers are not picked to give them chance to establish and spread, providing a feature for all to enjoy. Next month’s work party will be the Great British Spring Clean on Friday 4 June, meeting in the Car Park at 10 a.m. We are proud to have taken part in this Keep Britain Tidy initiative each year since 2016 when it was named “Clean for the Queen” to celebrate her 90th Birthday. It is very heartening to see other great litter picking initiatives being set up successfully locally to combat the growing problem of litter. As we continue to move out of Lockdown we will be planning our Annual General Meeting, also we aim to celebrate this year being 25 years since the Friends of Quarry Park was first set up. We expect to have more information by next month. If you want to know any more about our group, or to join us as a volunteer, please contact us via thequarrypark@gmail.com or via our Facebook Page Friends of Quarry Park. Janice Bewley, Secretary, Friends of Quarry Park.

Fun Dog Show to raise funds for Rossington Hall Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Rossington Hall RDA is a an independent group that offers the experience of riding and being with horses to disabled adults and children in the Doncaster area. As a registered charity we rely on volunteers, fundraising and donations in order to operate, as well as care for our horses and ponies. Covid-19 restrictions during the past year have meant we had to close some of the time and couldn’t organise any fundraising events either so things have obviously been quite difficult. The good news is that we are now open again and offering riding sessions to some of our more independent riders but there is still some way to go yet before we are able to welcome everyone back. To kick start our 2021 fundraising we are holding a …
