Welcome to the March 2019
Issue of The Barnby Dun and
Edenthorpe Arrow. Please remember to mention the Arrow wherever you use the local businesses that advertise. The Barnby Dun & Edenthorpe Arrow relies heavily on the support of the local businesses advertising their goods or services. Without them it would not be possible every month. Also, remember that we have a business directory listing at the back of the magazine. If you are looking for a local tradesman, electrician, plumber, tiler etc, you should find what you are looking for, if not throughout the magazine then hopefully in the business directory. Look out for the new additions each month. The cost for advertising in the Business Directory is ÂŁ30 plus vat for a 12 month Contact Details: entry. Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. Taking office at the Annual General Meeting on January 21 were George Kirk as President, David Allen as Secretary and John Bird as Treasurer. Improving Images at Thorne Camera Club The new programme began with a review of the interclub competition images. Led by the Chairman, David, members considered the remarks the judge had made about images. Judges try to help improve photography, by pointing out things that could be done, and how to do it. Sometimes in a competition, things move quickly, so there is little time to consider the remarks. This session gave members more time to discuss what was said, what was meant, how to do the things suggested, and get feedback from other members as well. Most thought it was a very useful and informative session, and some asked for more such evenings. No doubt this session proved useful when members entered images for a Club competition , with Robert Helliwell ARPS of York judging. One of his main comments was about bland skies, and how a more interesting sky can add to an image. A note to be made regarding a tutorial on how to change a sky! Robert’s choice of images for the theme of Sepia Toned, was Hope Springs Eternal by John Marshall LRPS, Ghostly Shoppers by David Ulyett, Zoe by Mark Harrison, and Time to Reflect by Michael Donnison. In the Open section his choices were Tour de Yorkshire by Colin Jarvis, Leopard at Lunch by Patricia Woodward, and Cromer Pier at Sunset by Lynda Rhodes. All were Highly Commended. Using an instructional DVD by Ken Payne, members were shown how to darken down bright spots, and had the opportunity to have a go at the Laptop Night. Working through what Ken had said, following the steps on the DVD, some good attempts were made at enhancing one of their images. Those without a laptop found a fellow member to share with, and as two heads are better than one, so the saying goes, learned from each other. The final meeting of the month, the ‘ piece de resistance’ as she surely must enjoy being billed, Andrea Hargreaves MPAGB, EFIAP/b, BPE3*, PSA4 presented her images and prints for the delight of club members, and also gave details of how she began her photographic journey from a beginner to a Master in eight years, plus how she produced her winning images for the assessment. Her approach to digital photography elevates it to an art form with stunning images inspired by Norse mythology, yet every element is from a photograph she has taken. It was a stunning and mesmerising presentation with images we can only dream of emulating. There’s a lot more good stuff to come in the Spring Programme, so if you think you’d like to join the Club, contact David on 07643821182 or email on thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

Local Charity Supported by South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough has been able to upgrade IT equipment in its Thorne office thanks to a grant of £4000 which was funded by E.ON’s Tween Bridge Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund through South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation. Last year the charity helped over 9000 clients with more than 31000 issues, handling over £6 million debt, and client statistics show that demand for services rises year on year. Mrs Karen Bothamley, CEO of Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough, said, “The majority of our IT equipment is outdated and unable to cope with vastly increased client numbers and new initiatives such as advice by webchat. Cuts over many years have meant that we have not been able to replace machines when we needed to. The new computers and printers will make the jobs of volunteer advisers working in our Thorne office much easier, and some of the machines will allow us to help clients to set up and access Universal Credit accounts. We are very grateful for the support of South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation – we would have really struggled to upgrade our equipment without them.”
