Please mention “The Arrow when responding to advertisements
Welcome to the March 2020 issue of the Barnby Dun & Edenthorpe Arrow. This month we have lots of news and articles, which is great. Please keep sending in your information. My details are below. Please remember to mention the Arrow wherever you use the local businesses that advertise. The Arrow relies heavily on the support of the local businesses advertising their goods or services. Without them it would not be possible every month. Also, remember that we have a business directory listing at the back of the magazine. If you are looking for a local tradesman, electrician, plumber, tiler etc, you should find what you are looking for, if not throughout the magazine then hopefully in the business directory. Look out for the new additions each month. The cost for advertising in the Business Directory is ÂŁ30 plus vat for a 12 month entry. Please contact me if you would like your business details including. The deadline for the April issue is Thursday 12th March.
Best Wishes Julie Morrell

Community News Friends of Quarry Park Friends of Quarry Park held their first volunteer work party of the year on Friday 7 February. There was a great turnout with 11 volunteers supported by 2 of the DMBC Countryside team. Gorse was cut back and cleared on a section of the blue walking route. This had been growing over several years and was well and truly out of control. This essential work had to be completed at this time of year before the birds start nesting so they are not disturbed. A small team of litter pickers worked in “the dip” and on the Post Office path. They even retrieved an article of clothing high up in a tree thanks to some excellent work with long rakes. It just shows how a willing, hardworking team can make a big difference in a relatively short time. New volunteers are always welcome to join this friendly team, all tools and protective clothing are provided and it’s not all work, there is time for a chat and a laugh in the break for refreshments. Meet at the Green Flagpole at 10 a.m on the first Friday of each month. The sunny days this last few weeks have highlighted signs of spring on its way in Quarry Park with spring bulbs starting to make an appearance. The snowdrops scattered through the woodland are a pleasure to see. The newly planted ones have a way to go yet but the more established clumps are showing the treats instore for future years. Dates for your diary: - Next Volunteer Work Party Friday 6 March at 10am. Open Meeting Wednesday 18 March in the Methodist Church, Greens Road, Dunsville at 7 p.m. All welcome. This is an informal meeting to give those interested in Quarry Park an opportunity to meet the Friends, hear their plans and have their own input. April Volunteer Work Party Friday 3 April at 10 a.m, this will be combined with the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean, a special litter pick when the Friends will once again join with other groups across the country to tidy up their areas. quarrypark@gmail.com Facebook Page: Friends of Quarry Park

Thorne Camera Club Spring into Spring Thanks to the work of the Committee, the Spring Programme is as varied and interesting as usual, with a mix of competitions, demonstrations, tutorials and speakers. This month’s competition was judged by Dave Burgess MA(Photo) ARPS from Castleford. He found the theme, Magic Moments, a good choice with a variety of subject matter covered. Family and friends are hard to fit into club themes generally, but this theme was perfect. ‘Kelpies at Sunset’ by Tom O’Shea was the judge’s first choice, closely followed by ‘Family Moment’ by Terry Gunnill and ‘Across the Generations’ by Lynda Ulyett. Commended were Norman Pugh, David Ulyett and Mike Donnison. In the Open section, where just about anything goes, Terry Gunnill was first again with ‘Autumn’, closely followed by Mike Donnison’s ‘Splash’ and Norman Pugh’s ‘North Bay, Flamborough’. Highly Commended were Bill Mitchell and Colin Jarvis, Commended were Trevor Holt, Terry Gunnill and Bill Mitchell. A Visit to Kirk Bramwith for the Snowdrop Festival is always popular, and this year was no exception. Flowering quite early, the churchyard is carpeted with snowdrops. So members got some lovely photos. At Thorne CC members like to share their experience with others, so were given a demonstration of portraits using only one light. With the use of modern technology, members watched live time, images produced by tethering the camera, laptop and projector. Changes of angle of light made different moods and atmospheres to images of competent models Ishaia, Ophelia and Morganrose. A very talented family, they later posed for members to take some photos of their own. Maybe some of these portraits will figure in two other competitions to be held in the near future, the InterClub Contest with Winteringham CC, hosted this time by Winteringham. Then the Annual Sheffield Photographic Society Knockout Competition, between twenty to thirty clubs from around the region. Sadly, Wath Salon was cancelled this year, after almost forty consecutive years, due to the lack of volunteers to run it, a sad case, but sadly not a rare state of affairs. If you have an interest in Photography and would like to visit the club, do go along to a meeting in Thorne Methodist Church Hall on Mondays at 7.15 ( except Bank Holidays ) where meetings will be held until the end of May. You will be made most welcome and your first visit is free of charge. Or contact David on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

DANUM PROBUS CLUB danum probus.co.uk Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At this meeting we have a speaker whose subjects cover a wide variety of interests, the programme can be found on our website, www.danumprobus.co.uk. Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the annual holiday which is usually in early June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Section play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. The Club held its AGM on Monday 20 January. As with all AGMs there were many items to discuss and decide, amongst which were the election of Officers and Committee for the forthcoming year. The Officers elected for the 2020 are: President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Elected Members Co-opted Members Almoner Programme Secretary Bowls Outings/Holidays Theatre
John Brown Alan Whitehall George Kirk John Bird Geoff Firth, Jeff Maddison, John McWhan Ian Sampson John Hope Peter Oldale Chris Harris Vacant Gordon Fletcher
At the end of the AGM the Retiring President, George Kirk, handed over the “Chain of Office” to the incoming President John Brown, and then George was given a Past President’s Tie and a Badge. The new President thanked the members for entrusting him with the Office, and and thanked the former President and Officers for the work in the preceding year to ensure the survival of the Club. He then said that during the forthcoming year he would like the Club to support the Doncaster charity Firefly, and to start this off there will be a retiring collection at the end of each meeting. The first meeting in February (3rd) featured a presentation by Brian Downs about the Doncaster REMAP Panel. REMAP is a voluntary organisation which supplies bespoke aids for people with disabilities. Brian said that most people who need aids such as wheelchairs and walking frames are supplied with them by the NHS, but there is a small proportion who need something a little different to improve their lives. In conjunction with medical professionals and the patients themselves, aids are designed and constructed in REMAP volunteers’ own premises at no cost to the patients. Brian illustrated the talk with many pictures of the aids REMAP had designed and constructed, and had brought along a few of the smaller ones for us to see directly. This talk really made us aware that good as the NHS is, it cannot deal with everything and how good it is the there are people such as those in REMAP ready to step in to help when needed. On March 2 our speaker is Mike Burdis “Catching a Spy”, and then on Monday 17 February John Slater will be giving us his “Reflections on a Prison Service Career”. Any interested men who would like to come to these meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table. More information is also available on the website (danumprobus.co.uk). Brian DOWNES – REMAP DONCASTER PANEL
