Zooming Along at Thorne Camera Club Lockdown for photographers is a challenging time, but Camera Club members have embraced the challenge, finding things to photograph indoors, in the garden, or out and about locally. Not only that, they are using the time to organise, catalogue and review their library of images, and use their more recently acquired skills to improve and enhance images from some time ago. Guest speaker Colin Southgate FRPS came up with some ideas of his own which proved interesting and inspiring when he ‘zoomed’ in recently. He treated members to an evening of abstract work created by playing around with Photoshop, Affinity, or other software. Using images he had already taken he used them in novel ways to create panels of images which would stand alone or could be used in other photographs. This type of work is less photography and more digital art, not necessarily everyone’s ‘cup of tea’, it none the less gave an insight into what could be done, especially on a cold, wet and windy winter’s day. More members are experimenting with their photographs to enhance and lift them to another level, using alternate backgrounds, adding in other elements, using textures and lighting for different effects. Watching television, especially the adverts, can lead to new ideas and inspiration, also looking at the work of more experienced photographers and artists. A Members’ Night saw members sharing their knowledge and interests with others with a lighting demonstration, very useful for those indoor still life shots some people are doing at the moment. Well prepared, well delivered, it was useful to understand how different light sources in different positions affect the outcome of your photos. Another member, being a bit of a globe trotter, shared images taken at the extremes of the earth, the Arctic and Antarctic. From landscape to wildlife, geography to culture, it was a fascinating insight into the area and lives of people and animals who live at such extremes. Other members also shared some of their images, including some of the first to be taken after the Camera Club began in 2013. Happy memories of more normal times. It doesn’t look as if we’ll be getting back to normal meetings anytime soon, but there is still the Spring Programme on Zoom to enjoy. These meetings are fortnightly, open for members and potential new members, so if you are interested, please get in touch. Contact 07463821182 or thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

Community News Friends of Quarry Park Our last volunteer work party was held in December 2020 when the Car Park on St Mary’s Road was cleared and tidied. DMBC have let us know that they are waiting for planning approval for the CCTV tower which is to be installed before it can be reopened. Like many things at present it is taking longer due to the Covid pandemic. We may be still in lockdown but some of our volunteers have still been going out individually or in socially distanced pairs to keep on top of litter picking. Their latest efforts started on the path from the Broadway entrance when 4 bags of litter were collected. They are keeping in practice for the 6th Annual Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean which is to be held a little later than usual from 28 May to 13 June 2021. We will confirm our date(s) nearer the time. We have had to appeal to walkers again to keep in single file on the narrow path to the west of the woodland and not encroach on the farmer’s field as he is concerned about damage to his crops. This path was left as a concession and is not a bridleway or one of the recommended walking routes. Maps of the walking routes are on the boards at the Park’s entrances and can be downloaded from the DMBC website for Quarry Park. We hope you enjoy your walks and a chance to see the seasons unfold throughout the year on our Local Nature Reserve. As I write this the snow is steadily falling but nature is still at work on the Park. We are seeing the first signs of spring with snowdrops making an appearance in the woodland. We look forward to better weather and the fantastic spring displays of colourful bulbs which should cheer everyone up. Janice Bewley

COUNTRY MUSIC ARTIST EMMA JADE CROWNED MISS DONCASTER GB A singer from Doncaster has expanded her repertoire to gain the title Miss Doncaster GB ahead of Miss Great Britain 2021. Emma Jade is a country music artist from here in Doncaster, at the age of 16 she was flown to Nashville to perform as the first international artist at a show called the Teen Hoot. At 18 she auditioned for The Voice UK and became a member of Team Tom, an experience she describes as an incredible learning opportunity. In the 8 years since The Voice she has been touring all over, playing shows to amazing crowds, recording a number one record on the UK country music charts and being nominated for female vocalist of the year at the British Country music awards. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic Emma hasn’t been able to play a show since March 2020. With the loss of her touring schedule Emma Jade decided to turn her hand to something new, she applied to compete in Miss Great Britain. After an intense application process and a long wait whilst the organisers figured out how to proceed with the competition during the pandemic she was named as the winner of the regional Miss Doncaster GB title, which takes her straight to the Miss Great Britain 2021 final. Miss Great Britain did manage to go ahead in February 2020 before the first lockdown to celebrate it’s 75th anniversary with fellow country music artist Jen Atkin being crowned the winner. The Miss Great Britain 2021 final is planned to take place in September 2021. Miss Great Britain has helped launch the career of many well-known names including Miss GB 1957 Leila Williams (Blue Peter presenter), Miss GB 1976 Dinah May (actress), Miss GB 1984 Debbie Greenwood (TV presenter), Miss GB 2006 Danielle Lloyd (Model, TV personality) and Miss GB 2007 Preeti Desai (Model, film actress). ‘I think there’s a big stereotype when it comes to pageants, people seem to think it’s all about how we look and the most beautiful girl always wins. This really isn’t the case anymore, being a pageant queen is all about being a great role model and having the confidence to speak your mind. We have affiliated charities that we all raise money for but we’re all completely different. I personally campaign for the end to period and hygiene poverty, as well as raising money for the Teenage cancer trust alongside raising money for the two Miss Great Britain 2021 charities; Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish. Of course, we get to dress up and feel glamorous but we also form amazing friendships with the other girls, this is actually the first pageant system I’ve been involved in and it’s amazing to see how supportive the girls are of each other.’ Says Emma of the competition. Emma’s fundraising efforts for the Miss Great Britain charities began at the beginning of this year and will continue through to the final with her planning an online festival ‘country against cancer’. Though these are not the only charities Emma works with, the Miss Great Britain 2020 finalists raised £42,000 for Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish. ‘I would really love to see people get involved with the work I do with different charities, I have

links on my social media pages to donate money to the Teenage Cancer Trust, Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish as well as links to donate hygiene products, which I then distribute to people in need. The pandemic has hit charities really hard, it’s great to be able to do my bit to help’ Emma has said she cannot wait until it is safe for her to return to live shows and aims to be able to reschedule her 2020 tour as soon as possible. She hopes that the work she is doing during lockdown will ensure she is in a position to be the best role model possible should she win Miss Great Britain 2021.
