Welcome to the November 2018 issue of the Barnby Dun and Edenthorpe Arrow Magazine. This year is just flying by, I can hardly believe its November already and it’ll soon be Christmas! Don’t forget to send details of any festive events that are taking place or any special Christmas news items. Please send any Christmas news or event details that you would like including in the December issue before Wednesday 15th November. As yet I haven’t planned anywhere to go for Bonfire night, but I’m sure that I will be attending a fire or firework display somewhere. Just remember to stay safe and enjoy the fireworks!
Best Wishes Julie Morrell

Showing Off at Thorne Camera Club To start the new season, there is an Exhibition of members’ work in Thorne Library. Entry is free, and prints are to be rotated, so an ever changing display. Please go along, enjoy the pictures, and see the current standard of work, which is constantly improving. Any members around will be more than happy to chat to you about the images, and the club. The Autumn programme got off to a good start with members showing holiday photos. A visit to Iceland and Greenland was not for everyone, although the images of icebergs and glaciers are stunning. Some super images were taken around the UK, and also on the Club’s Summer Outings Programme. There were landscapes and seascapes, action and sport, as well as low light photography. All members were keen to show their images and prepare for the forthcoming competition. Mr Royston Packer DPAGB, AWFP, LINSWP , recently arrived in the area from South Wales, was a new and welcome addition to the YPU judging panel. With his easy style, sense of humour, keen interest and photographic experience, he set about the somewhat daunting task of judging the large number of prints. He judged on the night, a new experience for him, which he took in his stride. Shortlisting prints in the Open section, as a first round, was difficult enough, but the standard was so high, he had a large number, so shortlisted a second time. Those not in the final group were Commended. His final selection in the Open section saw Allen Denby take 1st place, with ‘Open Wide’ , 2nd was Bill Mitchell. and 3rd Colin Jarvis. Highly Commended were: Allen Denby, Mel Brown (3), Dan O’Shea, David Ulyett and Stephen Wall. In the Theme, Photos from the Outings, only seven prints were entered, so Roy said that everyone should be Commended at the least. He commented, as is usual, on every print, giving helpful hints and tips, critique not criticism, as he pointed out. First place went to Lynda Ulyett with ‘Leap of Faith’, 2nd to Bill Mitchell, ‘ Amy on the Humber’ and 3rd to Terry Lockwood with ‘Spurn Lightship’. Highly Commended were: Tom O’Shea, Norman Pugh, Lynda Ulyett, Bill Mitchell, Terry Lockwood. Members are now looking forward to an activity packed programme in the coming months, with invited speakers, tutorials, practical sessions, a visit to Dearne Valley CC, and more competitions including the first Interclub Competition. If you are interested in Photography, please go along to the club as a visitor to see if it suits you. You’ll be made very welcome, they are a friendly group. Or contact the Chairman on 07463821182, or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk for more information. Meetings are Mondays 7.15pm in the Methodist Church Hall on King Street, Thorne DN8 5BA.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. One of the highlights of the sporting and social life of the Club is the “Bowls Lunch”, which was held at Branton Community Centre on Kilham Lane on Wednesday 20 September. Members and guests enjoyed an excellent buffet lunch which was followed by the presentation of trophies by Bowle Captain Peter Oldale. John Gregory received the Singles Trophy (see photo) and Arthur Kendrick was presented with one of the Doubles Shields, his bowls partner being on holiday. Tony McNeilis, the other half of the victorious doubles partnership received his shield from the President at the beginning of the October 1 meeting. The guest speaker at this meeting was David Templeman whose subject was the Sheffield Deer Park, and area of land to the east of Sheffield which from Saxon times to well into the Medieval era was parkland containing deer and other game, originally without and enclosure, and then enclosed by the Normans. David gave a well explained presentation about the history and uses of the park, its name echoed in some present-day geographical features to the present time eg Parkway, which runs from the M1 to the city centre, and goes through tho former deer park. Next on Monday 15 October, George Young’s subject was “The Boer War’, and on Thursday 18 October we met at Ye Olde Bell at Barmby Moor for the second Ladies and Guests Lunch of the Year. In November meetings will be on Mondays 5 Nov. and 19 Nov. At the first one Malcolm Walpole will speak about “Jordan” and on the next one Richard Wimpenny’s subject is “Why Hitler?”. Both meetings are at Town Moor Golf Club starting at 10am. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191221) or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information.
