Just a quick note this month to remind everyone about our annual Memory Tree. As usual it will be held in the Frenchgate Centre and will start on Monday, 28th November until Saturday, 10th December (excluding Sunday, 4th December). Times are 10am to 3pm. We have all new tokens this year for you to take home in memory of your loved ones in exchange for a donation. Also we have labels on which to write a personal message to hang on the Christmas tree in the Centre. We look forward to seeing familiar as well as new faces for a chat and to hopefully let you know the latest news regarding possible purchases for our local hospitals.
Also, don’t forget that Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers are holding their very popular Annual Charity Christmas Concert on Saturday, 17th December at Doncaster Minster from 7-9 pm. Please telephone 01302 323748 for further information. We are extremely grateful that they will be supporting Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust again.

It was a memorable week for all the wrong reasons after our Autumn Social evening with the passing of the Queen. Even as she was 96 years old her death came suddenly and was a shock to the whole nation. It was decided that the opening meeting of the Autumn Programme went ahead with a 'Members Night' when members brought a selection of prints to share with other members. The prints had a wide range of subjects, were laid out on tables for previewing before each members presented their images and to talk about what inspired them to take the shot. Many of them produced some questions by others and provided lively discussions.
The meeting on the 19th September was postponed as a matter of respect for the late Queen's State Funeral' and will hopefully will be re-scheduled at a later date within the new programme. Unfortunately the first speaker for the new programme Tracy Lund from Hull was taken ill with covid and had to cancel her talk at the last minute, however the acting chairman rallied to the situation and gave an excellent talk complete with projected images from a tour of Yellowstone National Park showing the diversity of wildlife, hydrothermal features including “Old Faithful” the world famous geyser.
Some of the best times for taking photographs are the “Blue Hour” and the “Golden Hour that take place each morning and evening. The morning “Blue Hour” starting a few minutes before sunrise with the evening “Blue Hour” starting a few minutes after sunset. The periods immediately after 'sunrise' and just before 'sunset' are known as the “Golden Hours” and last around an hour, so check the timings of the sunrise and sunset and plan ahead and get to your location early.
With soft light available, both “Blue Hour” and “Golden Hour” lend themselves to landscapes and cityscapes. Buildings in cityscapes and trees in landscapes also benefit in the “Golden Hour” with long shadows helping to form compositions that add to the impact of the image.
As longer shutter speeds will predominately be used during these periods the use of a tripod and remote shutter release or the camera's inbuilt timer to operate the shutter are recommended. Shooting in aperture mode will allow you to set an aperture that will keep the overall image sharp and with the ISO set at 100 or as low as possible that keeps the image clear and bright, the camera will then determine the correct shutter speed for a good exposure. Manual mode is another option to try – experiment with different settings till you find what you like. Finally it is preferable to shoot in RAW as more information can be gleamed from darker areas in post production editing.
Following on from our recent visit to Thorne Community Wood, Karl who had invited us there joined us at Quarry Park one evening and escorted us on a Bat Walk! This is the first time we have done this so was unsure whether we would see any bats but, after around an hour of walking along the perimeter of the woods, we eventually picked up a signal on the detectors. There were a couple of what we believe to be pipistrelle bats flying around. We then made our way back across the park towards the car park where we detected more bats! Karl explained that Quarry Park is a good place for bats due to the tree line and open space. It was a very interesting evening and we are very grateful to Karl for arranging this for us and sharing his knowledge of these fascinating animals. We are hoping to be able to offer some Guided Bat Walks next year, so watch this space!!
Our October work party took place on Friday 7th and we had a record turnout of volunteers! There were 18 of us in total, including 4 new recruits and 2 DMBC Rangers. We split into two groups, one of which went around the park litter picking. They did a great job and collected 6 bags of rubbish. The rest of the team set about filling in some of the many rabbit holes in the central grassed area. A huge thank you to Dunsville Quarry for donating the sand, and to Paul for collecting it in his trailer. Riley the dog thought it was a good game digging the sand out of the newly filled holes! We had a break for refreshments and enjoyed buns baked by Debra before continuing with our tasks. It was a great morning’s work and we managed to beat the rain! Thank you to everyone who joined us.
Our Coffee Morning is scheduled for Saturday 29th October at Hatfield Community Library 10am – 12 noon. There will be a raffle, tombola, refreshments and a Carved Pumpkin Competition. The competition is open to adults and children with a small fee to enter. There will be a prize in each category. You can drop off your carved pumpkins at the Library from Thursday 27th or bring them along on the day. The voting for the best ones will take place during the event and be announced at the end, around 11.45am. If anyone would like to donate any home baking to sell that would be much appreciated. There will also be special Halloween Plant Pot Buddies (upcycled golf balls) on sale too! Please come along and support us and vote for your favourite Pumpkin.
Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 4th November and Friday 2nd December at 10am –12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.
Danum Probus Club is a group of people who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Doncaster Sports Club, Bennetthorpe, Doncaster starting at 10 am.
On Monday 3 October the Danum Probus Group met at Doncaster Sports Club to listen to a presentation by Alan Clements. His subject was “A Tibetan Journey”.
Alan is a now a retired business man who as had a strong interest in Tibet for many years. A Buddhist for more than 30 years, Alan has taken instruction in meditation and dharma in both the Gelug Tibetan Buddhist and Japanese Soto Zen traditions. His first of several private meetings with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1992 was to ask the the question “what is the meaning of life” and this led him to becoming the Chairman and later Vice President of the Tibet Society and Relief Fund of the UK.
Alan took us through the recent history of Tibet, from the take over by China in the early 1950’s, the escape of the Dalai Lama to India in 1959 along with many other Tibetans. He noted that in terms of projects such as road and rail infrastructure the Chinese has been beneficial, but they have treated the Tibetans badly, similar the that of the Uigurs in China itself. Alan also has a large garden (Cascades Gardens) which is open to the public from Spring to Autumn, part of which is influenced by his Buddhist faith.
This was an excellent and thought provoking presentation from Alan Clements.
In November, Chris Helme will be taking us back with “Memories of Christmas”, to be held on 7 November at Doncaster Sports Club. Anyone who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please contact David Allen (07395 128759) for more information or e-mail enquiries@danumprobus.co.uk .
