Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. The guest speaker on Monday 3 September was George Clark whose subject was the Zulu Wars. This part of British history in South Africa is overlooked, but its outcomes had a significant effect on future happenings in the colony, and did not turn out well for either side. We were taken through the alleged reasons for fighting the wars, and the battles that ensued aided by a good collection of visual aids, especially maps. This was a very informative presentation on a subject many of us knew little about. At the second meeting of the month on Monday 18 September Malcolm Walpole gave one of his audio visual presentations, this one being “Legacy of the Emperors”. On Wednesday 27 September the Bowls Section held its annual lunch and Trophy presentation at Kilham Hall, Branton. Nearly 50 members and guests attended this event Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Geoff Firth (01302 849734), David Allen (01302 885813 or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information.

Autumn at Thorne Camera Club As Autumn approaches, members of the Camera Club are reluctant to let the summer go as, in spite of very unsettled weather, they have been enjoying some interesting outings over the past few months. The visit to the Appleby and Frodingham Steam Railway which runs round Scunthorpe steel works was well attended, with some ‘Time Travellers’ appearing in period costume! It was a very enjoyable day. Being a friendly group, outings are sociable occasions, and the Picnic in the Park was more sociable than most. Some outings go far afield, some are very local, but the Picnic took place in Doncaster, in the delightful Elmfield Park. The weather was kind, fining up just in time for the Sunday afternoon outing, when members met up by the fountain for photos and a good old fashioned picnic with family and friends. Members sometimes arrange impromptu outings, one such visiting Doncaster Wildlife Park, which is becoming a favourite haunt. The social activities continued with an evening in The Punch Bowl Inn, with even more members, and a few potential new members, catching up with all that’s been happening over the summer months. The second Photography for Beginners and Improvers Course is almost finished, with twenty people now feeling more confident about using their cameras, and hopefully raring to go on to produce better pictures. The new Autumn Programme starts on Monday September 18th at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall on King Street, DN8 5BA, with a review of members’ photographs from the summer, on outings, on holiday, or just at home with the family. It’s always a popular evening, getting together again, having a chat over a cuppa and looking at some interesting images. Visitors and new members are always welcome. The programme then continues every Monday except October 2nd, with friendly competitions aimed at helping members improve their photography, plus visiting speakers, demonstrations, tutorials, and practical sessions. Every week is different. Whatever your level of photography, whatever your interest, such as wildlife, landscape, family and friends, holidays, etc, the club can help you take better photos. If you would like to find out more about the club, contact the Chairman, David, on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk.

This gorgeous girl is Rosie, an 8 month old Doberman X Great Dane puppy. Rosie is an adorable bundle of energy!! She has not had a lot of training or socialisation with other dogs, so will need some work. She has been fine with children, but cats find her a bit too bouncy!! She is a lovely girl with a lot of love to give, so we would really like to find the right home for her. If you would like any more details, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.
If The Answer is YES! Please call Julie Morrell on 01302 351760 Or 07854 880882 for more details. Email: Julie@arrowpublications.co.uk
