Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough celebrates 80 years of the Citizens Advice service Re: 80th Anniversary Event Citizens Advice was formed 80 years ago on 4th September 1939 to help families affected by the outbreak of the Second World War. To mark the anniversary, volunteers, staff and trustees held a sponsored cycle and walk at Lakeside Doncaster to raise awareness of the charity and its services. Mrs Karen Bothamley, CEO, said “The nationwide charity has seen many changes over the last 80 years, and we wanted to do something locally to celebrate the occasion. No one else advises as many people with as many different kinds of problems across the Doncaster Borough, which gives us a unique insight into the challenges people are facing today. Demand for our services grows yearon-year - last year for instance we handled more than £9.3 million of debt for our clients. I would like to pass on our thanks to everyone who supported us – as a team we covered 139 miles and raised £1089 on the day. As a charity reliant on raising funds to provide the service, the money will be used to update equipment and software used in provision of free advice to clients across Doncaster.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST Wonderful news! At the end of August we received an anonymous donation of £10,000 towards the biopsy machine. This was extremely generous and our very grateful thanks to the donor(s). Our stall at Auckley Show made £324. After an early shower thankfully the sun shone for the rest of the day. Thank you to everyone who supported us. Intake and Wheatley Pub Watch donated £700 last month. Our thanks to all involved and for their continuing support. We received £3,500 from Wheatley Golf Club and would like to thank the organisers and everyone who donated or helped in any way. Don’t forget to make a note of our annual Memory Tree event in the Frenchgate Centre which will be from Monday, 25th November until Friday, 20th December. We hope to be downstairs outside Boots from 10am to 3pm Monday to Saturday.

MEMBERS OF THORNE CAMERA CLUB As the Autumn Programme begins at the Camera Club, I asked some of the newer members about their interest in Photography and their reasons for joining the Club. ‘I am looking forward to the new season at Thorne Camera Club,’ said Malcolm, ‘for what will be my second year. Having come back to Photography after many years, I was finding my technique rusty, my inspiration lacking and it seemed that I was the only one remotely interested in my images. Not sure what to expect, I went along one competition evening, was impressed by the warm welcome, the images on display, took the plunge and joined. I enter most competitions, not to win, though that would be nice, but to apply myself to the given theme, often something new or out of my comfort zone, to compare my efforts to others and learn from the judge’s critique. Guest speakers have been an inspiration and practical nights opened up new techniques and ideas, together with field trips to seek that special image and to socialise. Members have different levels of ability so it has been a pleasure to both pass on some of my knowledge and ideas and also learn from those more experienced. With a dramatic improvement to my images and a real boost to my enthusiasm, it’s been a great experience.’ Mike told me, ‘Before I joined Thorne Camera Club I was slightly apprehensive that I would lack experience, or good enough camera gear. I soon discovered this to be unfounded. The members of the club have varying degrees of experience and are willing to share their knowledge with others. I particularly like the relaxed, friendly feel and the varied and interesting schedule. Since joining the club I feel my Photography has advanced greatly. Jan is probably the newest member, and she said, ‘ I only joined in April, after talking to a few members at the 1940s weekend,’ (the Club had an Exhibition in the Methodist Church) ‘ I found all members very welcoming. I thought the membership fee of £15.00 very acceptable. I’m looking forward to the New Season, and I hope we can do some Photoshop at some point.’ With guest judges and speakers, tutorials , demonstrations, practical evenings, photo shoots and outings, as well as competitions, all aimed at helping members improve their Photography, there’s something for just about everyone. Why not come along and find out. Contact David on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. The Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster at 10am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests. (see www.probusonline.org/danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Seaton play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. On August 19 our speaker was John Brown who is the current Vice-President of the Club. Before retirement, John was as a property surveyor by profession, and his talk was based on the memories of the many years he spent working in Doncaster and the surrounding area. After a brief history of his family firm, he outlined the many strands of knowledge needed to succeed as a surveyor, went on to tell us about related subjects which have a strong bearing on the work done in his profession such as finance and geology, and concluded with some examples of work done in the area. This was a fascinating insight into a subject which touches most of us when buying property. Tony Cowley was the speaker on September 3 with his presentation on “Vintage Motorcycles”. Tony, a member of the Vintage Motor, talked about his love for older machinery with the centrepiece being a 1919 Sunbeam motorcycle which he brought with him, and was on display for all to see at the Golf Club where we meet. This motorcycle is one of several he now owns, having gradually reduced his “stock” from 36 over then past few years. Tony talked about the many rallies that he had been on, the interest his motor cycles had created when on these rallies, and the friends he had made as a result of ownership of vintage machines. In October our speakers will be Malcolm Frost with “Cock o’ the North” on the 7th, and on 21st Dave Adgar on “the Berlin Wall”. The Ladies’ Autumn Luncheon will be on Thursday 17th October. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.
