Community News Friends of Quarry Park On Friday 4 September Friends of Quarry Park were able to hold their second volunteer work party since Lockdown restrictions were eased. 6 volunteers worked alongside a DMBC Countryside Ranger to make further inroads into outstanding work. They cleaned out paths leading into the zipwire dip, the dip and “moat” area were generally tidied up from overgrowth and debris and 3 bags of litter were collected. Overhanging branches were cut back on nearby paths. Volunteers worked socially distanced observing Covid 19 guidance. There will be a second work party this month on Friday 18 September when the Friends will take part in the countrywide Keep Britain Tidy “Great British September Clean”. This replaces the Great British Spring Clean which had to be postponed due to Covid 19. As this has to be run with DMBC support and following strict Covid 19 guidelines, to keep both volunteers and the public safe, it is only open to members of the Friends Group. FOQP are proud of their record with litter picking and are very grateful to all the Quarry Park users who regularly help to pick up litter on their daily walks, it has made a great difference over the last few months. Janice Bewley (Secretary)
Garden gigs bring joy to adults with dementia People living with dementia, along with their family carers, are enjoying a series of socially distanced ‘garden gigs’ in Doncaster. These lively and interactive music sessions organised by darts, a participatory arts organisation based in Doncaster, are designed to support adults with dementia who have been feeling isolated during lockdown. Participants enjoy singing songs, making music and creating connections in the comfort of their gardens with professional musician Janet Wood. One participant, who thoroughly enjoyed the Garden Gigs, said “It’s been great singing songs with Janet and my friends. We’ve had a really fun afternoon.” Musician Janet Wood said, “Singing and music can make a real difference to people’s health and wellbeing. These Garden Gigs are a safe and fun way for adults with dementia and their families to experience the joy of making music together at a safe social distance.” darts normally lead weekly Singing for Memory music sessions for adults with dementia and their family carers at The Point on South Parade. Staff have been keeping in touch with group members throughout lockdown and know how lonely and isolated some of them are feeling. Although darts artists have created lots of online activities as part of the ‘darts at Home’ offer, many group members do not have access to the internet or do not feel confident in downloading resources. The garden gigs are the perfect way to stay connected with people while darts’ building, The Point, is closed to the public. darts continue to provide dementia-friendly activities on their website. Visit wearedarts.org.uk/ singingformemory to download videos, songs and activities.

Bader Academy Doncaster was originally scheduled to be completed by 1st September 2020 however plans are now in place for the school to open in two phases. This has been due to a number of reasons but, most recently, the implications of Covid-19. To limit disruption for children starting in Year 7, and above, an alternative building Bader at the Bridge (the former Levett School) has been secured.
The pupils will start at the centre in September and will transition over to the new building when it is safe to do so. The remaining pupils will start in January 2021 so will remain in their current provision up until this time. Given the delay, the simplest approach would have been to postpone the opening of the school until September 2021. However, they strongly believe this is too big a delay, and have, therefore, worked hard to try and secure the earliest opening possible. The Bader Academy Project Board had a visit to the school site during August and were blown away by the progress being made. The school is such an amazing space and is going to have incredible facilities for its pupils to use. Wilmott Dixon are aiming for the school to be handed over to Nexus Multi-Academy Trust in the Autumn. This will provide opportunities for the school to be visited by pupils, parents and carers to help with their transition into the school, ahead of them formally starting there in January. If you would like more information or have query about the school please get in touch by contacting https://www.baderacademy.org/contact.

Help shape local animal welfare The local branch of the RSPCA is seeking to recruit volunteer Trustees to help set the strategic direction of the Branch, monitor its progress, ensure appropriate policies are in place and support the management team, staff and volunteers. Doncaster, Rotherham & District branch supports the work of colleagues from the National RSPCA. The branch receives no government funding and as a result relies heavily on the generous donations of the public and local income generation such as fundraising events and charity shops. The Trustee role offers significant influence over the future of local animal welfare. Many people find the Trustee role enhances their skill set, advances their professional development or provides a meaningful outlet in retirement. The minimum commitment is approximately four hours per month. Some experience of managing people and/or a budget is essential, as is a passion for animal welfare, an ability to work within a team and reasonable IT literacy. Trustees must be 18 years or over. Please contact the Branch for more information. COVID19 has meant a 95% drop in income during lockdown. It is vital the branch survives to help animals like Adam. The cat was in a bad state with severe injuries to his tail which required amputation. He is coping well and has definitely earned a few treats for being such a good patient. He has a little way to go in his recovery and is still receiving treatment but will hopefully be looking for his forever home in no time. There are many ways to help the Branch with its mission to re-home and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, leaving a legacy, donating cash or goods, sponsship through the Safe Haven programme and attending events. There are RSPCA charity shops at Bawtry, Maltby, Rossington and Thorne as well as an eBay shop. The Animal Centre re-homes animals in its care and has a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. The Branch also provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.

This and That from Thorne Camera Club We all know the difficulties the pandemic is presenting to everyone, from visiting relatives to getting to the pub and shopping, are all a challenge, even going back to school is starting to look appealing! Some members of Thorne Camera Club have been getting about, (socially distanced of course!) and have taken some snaps to share. A small group visited Eastrington Ponds Nature Reserve, an even smaller group went to Skipwith Common, and a few visited Cusworth Hall, where the grounds and tea rooms were open. Unfortunately rain stopped play on that occasion. However two weeks previously, while cycling on the cycle path near Cusworth, one member came across an emu!. So please be careful . Apparently its called Ethel and is now reunited with its owner in Sprotborough, but Ethel the Emu has the wanderlust and keeps on escaping. Mike found himself watching a falconry show, including Harris Hawks, Stellas Sea Eagle, and a very serious looking Eagle Owl amongst the birds, and, of course, got some good photos. Travel being restricted has forced club members to look closer to home to take photos, a barn owl was photographed from one member’s bedroom window, and bees on flowers are always a popular subject. June photographed a robin in her garden, and another member, having a baking day, photographed the bread rolls she had made! There’s no limit to the ideas we can come up with when we’re stuck indoors. The city of Bath is usually full of tourists visiting the Roman Spa, however on this day, the busker was wondering where they had all gone as the place was empty. It was strange to visit Whitby where, instead of the usual crowds, photographers had the streets to themselves. With the lock down eased, the towns are filling up again, although some people have difficulty estimating 2metres so a mask is a useful addition. Further afield, Malham Cove is always a popular walk and provides an opportunity for a unique landscape photo, and much less crowded out in the fresh air. Let’s hope the pandemic starts to subside so we can all get back to some type of normality. A special meeting will be held as soon as circumstances and availability allow, to discuss the Autumn programme, which may well be a continuation of the abandoned Spring programme, so members should watch their emails.

Doncaster Rambler’s Press Release To Blaxton and back (from Finningley) Friday 21st August Meeting at The Green Finningley were seven trusting souls plus one dog (who incidentally was better behaved than some who turned up today). Mind you it’s a good job they had a sense of humour as we made more U-turns than a Johnston Government! Setting off south down the Old Bawtry Road, for ¼ mile when we suddenly failed to find an opening right so had to backtrack onto Wellinginton Drive where a broken fence left just managed to get us back on track, which after 180 m turned right and headed north through dense vegetation. We could have been in the middle of nowhere. After walking aimlessly for what seemed like forever the shout went out “Are we in Blaxton?” “No we’ve not left Finningley yet!” and as we emerged from Church Lane everyone exclaimed “I recognise that” as the village store and post office came into view. What wasn’t immediately visible, despite the high tech electronic ‘Follow Me Easy Map App’ was the footpath right, which took a couple of attempts to find, but we got there in the end tracing the southern edge of the recreation ground before turning left and heading north along Lindley Road and across the railway. We were now rambling proper, and for the next 1 ¼ miles we encountered open scrub, field edge (corn on the cob) and darkest forest, before a couple of left turns bought us onto the Thorne Road south for the return leg. But not before a cunning detour from the route developer Hilda Levine of the Doncaster Ramblers which took us west of Blaxton thus avoiding the busy A614. Sadly though after 1400m we were back on the main road, but surprisingly now the path headed into a narrow strip of woodland sheltering us from the traffic. Terrific. All too soon it was back on the pavement and across the level crossing when a sharp left turn brough us back to the Recreation Grounds which we crossed diagonally left then retracing our steps right right and left passing the Post Office before crossing the road to walk down Church Lane and onto St Oswald’s Close then a final left hand loop through the church yard (thankfully John A on hand to lead the way) and finally back to The Green Who cares about a few hiccups this was a great 5 ½ mile walk in lovely company.
