Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB
Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. On Monday 7 August our guest speaker was George Fiddler. George’s subject was the walled towns of Tuscany. These included Venice, Bologna, Florence, Sienna and Pisa. We were entertained and informed with a lively presentation accompanied by photographs and music. And on Monday 21 August, David Ashton enlivened our morning with another of his stars and planets talks, this time on “Mars”. Next month our meetings are on the September 4 and 18, when the speakers will be Nick Clark (Zulu Wars) and Malcolm Walpole (Legacy of the Emperors). Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Geoff Firth (01302 849734), David Allen (01302 885813 or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information.
Friends of Quarry Park Big Bluebell Plant Friends of Quarry Park had cause to celebrate last month when Quarry Park was one of three Parks in Doncaster to be awarded Green Flag status for the first time. At a short ceremony on Friday 21 July DMBC personnel and Friends of Quarry Park raised the flag aloft watched by local residents and regular visitors, everyone feeling proud that our Local Nature Reserve had been recognised nationally as deserving of this special award. The Friends Group are now moving on to their next project which is to create bluebell glades in the woodland using native English Bluebells. Thanks to funding from the Greggs Community Foundation and Hatfield Town Council 7,000 native English bluebell bulbs are to be purchased along with 1,000 wild garlic bulbs. They will be delivered late September and need to be planted as soon as possible. We are arranging a Big Bluebell Plant, a weekend of planting sessions for Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October from 10.30 to 12.30 and 2 to 4p.m each day. We are appealing for help in this mammoth task. If you enjoy Quarry Park and would like to see it enhanced by carpets of Native English Bluebells in springtime please contact us if you are able to help. If you are not able to help physically perhaps you could donate towards refreshments for the volunteers. This will be the first of our weekend volunteer sessions at the request of potential volunteers who are at work during the week, we aim to repeat them quarterly, the next one being in January 2018. They will be alternated between Saturday and Sunday, be for 2-3 hours and will be in addition to the present monthly sessions. To get in touch email thequarrypark@gmail.com, or via our Facebook page Friends of Quarry Park, or Tel 841451. We will be on the Park on Friday morning 1 September for our monthly volunteer work party, meeting in St Mary’s Road Car Park at 10 a.m. and our next public meeting will be on Wednesday 27 September at 7p.m in Dunsville Methodist Church when arrangements will be finalised for the bulb planting. ADVICE: Police issue advice after pet thefts in Doncaster. Police in Doncaster are urging pet owners to check their home security measures after a series of reported animal thefts across the town. There have been reported burglaries where dogs have been stolen from rear gardens, and in some cases entry forced into properties, to steal dogs of value. In one burglary, 13 Pug dogs were stolen. In another, an attempted burglary was reported to police where there were a number of Pug puppies inside the property. Eamonn Larkin, Crime Reduction Officer for Doncaster, said: “We understand that this type of theft causes a considerable amount of alarm among pet owners living in Doncaster and we are investigating whatever lines of enquiry are available to us. While a couple of the incidents reported to us have involved Pugs specifically, other burglaries have been reported to us that display no particular pattern on breed. In some cases, rabbits and a tortoise have been taken. There aren’t really any identifiable patterns in the location either, which means at this time it is very difficult to determine whether the crimes can be linked – we’ve had reports from Wheatley, Bentley, Scawthorpe, Askern, Balby and Hatfield. Our advice to all pet owners in Doncaster and across South Yorkshire is to review your home security. If you have dogs or puppies that are high value and/or desirable breeds, please make sure your home security is up-to-date and up to the job of keeping them safe. If you let your animals out in the rear garden, don’t leave them there alone and try and make sure you have some reasonable security on any outdoor kennels or dog runs. As well as dogs being stolen, we have also had two reports of rabbits being stolen from hutches in back gardens and one of a tortoise being stolen. More information on securing your property is available on our website: http://southyorks.police.uk/Bewise Be Wise this summer | South Yorkshire Police

This summer we're reminding you to #BeWise and to protect yourself and your property. During the summer months there can be a rise in seasonal crime trends, such as burglary and doorstop crime. This is usually linked to the warmer weather. SOUTHYORKS.POLICE.UK

Hatfield Town Cricket Club It's has been a big few weeks on and off the field at HTCC since our last update. On the field the 1st XI reached it's first ever Pontefract League Cup Final. They faced Ackworth CC coincidentally at Ackworth on the 6th August and a youthful looking side acquitted themselves with great credit despite suffering defeat. Ackworth batted first and were bowled out for 196. All the bowlers put in a great effort and bowled well with Kev Marshall 3-46 and Matt Cumpsty 2-24 the main wicket takers, while Shehzad Hussain bowled 8 overs for just 19 runs in a tight opening spell. Town never really got going in their reply with only Connah Pattison 21, Ellis Pattison 36 and Paul Davies 27 making any impact and saw Town all out for 131. Special mention has to be made of the support the team received a full supporters coach and with many more travelling by car outnumbering the home crowd. The turnout was well appreciated by the team and shows how much the club has become a part of the community. Thank you everyone! In the league fixtures both Saturday sides continue with narrow defeats followed by resounding victories. The highlight being the 1st XI's big win at neighbours Barnby Dun. Town made 230-5 with Ellis Pattison 80 and Connah Pattison 67no the mainstays. The hosts were then bowled out for 129 with James Winstanley 4-32 and Kev Marshall 3-29 doing the damage. The juniors have continued their good progress. The Under 11's lost narrowly in the cup semi-final, whilst the Under 9's have reached the supplementary Cup Final in their first season. The club have some good players to look forward to in the future! There is even more exciting news off the field. After much hard work over the last 2 years the club are now in a position to pursue the construction of a new pavilion. Funds are in place to support the planning process and the work we have done in the junior set up means we will be applying for the ECB's Clubmark status and this will in turn allow us to approach funding organisations with optimism. Pavilion plans have been drawn up already and will be submitted to the council shortly. We have had expressions of interest from local businesses offering assistance in the past and we are hoping these may still come to fruition now that were fully prepared. Please get in touch if you are interested in helping the club with this exciting project.

Citizens Advice North East Doncaster on hand to help with rollout of Universal Credit Citizens Advice North East Doncaster is helping people get ready for Universal Credit as it rolls out in full across Doncaster Universal Credit is a new benefit which helps people on a low income or not in work meet their living costs. It combines six benefits, including Housing Benefit and Working Tax Credit, into a single monthly payment. At the moment in Doncaster Universal Credit is only available to single jobseekers but from early in October 2017 parents, couples and people who can’t work because of their health who make a new claim will also receive it. Citizens Advice North East Doncaster is highlighting what changes are due to take effect, namely around how Universal Credit is paid, so that people can prepare before applying for the new benefit. The three changes Citizens Advice North East Doncaster says people need to be aware of are : Universal Credit payments are made in arrears once at the end of the month, rather than being paid every week. Payments will go straight into a claimant's bank account. This means people may need to set up their own standing orders for expenses like rent if it was paid directly to their landlord under the old Housing Benefit system. New Universal Credit applications, and any change in your circumstances, need to be made online. With people facing a 5 to 6 week wait for their first Universal Credit payment, Citizens Advice North East Doncaster is encouraging people to apply for an advance payment if they’re concerned about meeting their living costs in the meantime. Citizens Advice North East Doncaster has helped many people with a Universal Credit claim in the last year. The bulk of queries relate to people wanting to know how they make a claim and if they’re eligible to do so. They are now seeing rising numbers of people who are worried about how full rollout will affect them and their families. Karen Bothamley, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice said: “Universal Credit is the biggest ever change to the benefit system, so it’s important people get support while they get used to the new system. Most of the queries we’ve helped with so far have focused on people wanting to know how Universal Credit works, what it will mean for their money, and how to apply, and we’d expect that to continue during the full roll out. “ “We can help people at every stage of the application process- from guiding someone through the online application form, or offering budgeting advice to help people best manage their monthly payment. Anyone with a question or concern should get in touch with us at the earliest opportunity so we can help them make preparations for being on Universal Credit.” For more information, or to make an appointment for help, ring our adviceline 0344 499 4137 - between 10.00am and 4.00pm Mondays to Wednesdays North East Doncaster CAB is a registered charity no. 1096497 Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority no. 617681
