News, News, News, News, News…. Congratulations to Edenthorpe JFC under 11s on winning the Branton Football Tournament. The lads had to work really hard but played some outstanding football and scored some excellent goals along the way before finally beating Rossington on penalties thanks to a great goalkeeping performance saving 3 spot kicks. The final was an excellent game with 2 very strong teams that couldn't be separated. Next, we move onto the Sandal Park Tournament where we try to defend our win from last season.

Doncaster Man Powers to Sporting Success A power lifter from Barnby Dun is celebrating finishing third in the world at a top competition. Gary Lovett (42), a bricklayer, took part in the World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation’s World Championships 2016 held in Wrexham and came away with third position and a personal best lift of 132.5kilos. Selected to be part of Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust’s (DCLT) Talented Athlete Support Scheme (TASS) in 2014, Gary has since been able to get free access to DCLT’s top-class facilities which has helped him significantly with his training programme. Gary, who lives with his wife Jane and two teenage daughters, said: “I only took up powerlifting four years ago but have really taken to it and been really pleased with my progress, especially this recent success. I was initially delighted to win my regional competition at the end of last year which meant I qualified for the nationals. I went on to win that which secured my place at the world championships and I couldn’t really ask for more to go there and get third place with a personal best score. “I just want to say thank you to DCLT for all their support as I use a number of their venues including Adwick, Thorne and the Keepmoat, not only to help with my weight training but also for my cardiovascular work in the swimming pool. I train at least three or four times a week so to have easy access to the facilities across the town is such a benefit. It is a wonderful scheme and Doncaster sports people like me are very lucky to have it. “I am now looking to repeat what I have done over the last 12 months but go one step further and try and win the worlds. I am going to go down a weight category or two because I think that will make me more competitive but I really hope I can get into top shape and go all the way next year. “I also want to thank my coach Alan Twigg from Doncaster Powerlifting Club who has been an immense support to me. I can’t thank him enough for all the time and effort he puts into me and other local power lifters. “For me powerlifting is a great way to escape the stresses of life. It gives me something to focus my mind on and it is a great sport because it is open to all. No matter what weight, gender or age you are there is a category to suit so I really would encourage people to give it a go.” Jon Whiteley, head of community development at DCLT, said: “Gary has done extremely well and is really flying the flag for Doncaster in the world of powerlifting. We are delighted he continues on our TASS scheme and that we have been able to contribute to his recent success. We wish him all the best with his next goal to become world champion.” The TASS scheme was introduced by DCLT in 2012 in a bid to support local athletes who represent Great Britain at national or international level. DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncater starting at 10 am. On Monday 4 July the Club geld its annual summer members lunch at the Golf Club. The guest speaker at this event was Eric Allsop who spoke about World War 2 Gliders. Eric, who had been a member of the Glider Corps, gave us a potted history of the use of gliders in warfare. Their use use often went in tandem with the dropping of paratroopers in placing fighting troops behind enemy lines. Several nations used gliders, Russia being among the first, and then Germany rapidly taking it up. Germany had thousands of qualified glider pilots at the beginning of WW2 because although the Peace Treaty ending WW1 had forbidden Germany from setting up a military Air Force, there was no mention of gliders. So, young men were taught to fly gliders, and most of them converted to become pilots in the Luftwaffe when Hitler tore up the 1919 Peace Treaty, and others went on to fly military gliders. Great Britain and the USA also set up glider regiments, and the aircraft they built were capable of carrying between 8 and 22 personnel. In Germany the glider sections were part of the Luftwaffe, whilst in the UK they were part of the Army. Landing these gliders could be dangerous, because the pilots had never seen the chosen landing are beforehand, they were reliant on good intelligence about the area, and they hoped that the towing plane had told them to release the tow cable at the correct location. So there were some great success but also failure where gliders landed in the wrong place, or there were casualties when landing. And of course, the pilot could not go home, it was a one way ticket, just like the troops who were being carried. Meetings in August and September are: Aug 1 Aug 15 Sept 5 Sept 19
