The majority of domestic burglaries across Doncaster involving forced entry are because of a technique known as lock snapping. What’s the problem? The majority of standard uPVC doors automatically come fitted with a standard lock, which can be broken in a matter of seconds using every day tools. South Yorkshire Police have seen a change in the behaviour of burglars. It is now becoming increasingly common for a burglar to use a lock as their point of entry into a home. No matter how expensive your door is or how many locking points there are, criminals can still enter your property by breaking the lock. Cylinder locks are vulnerable to two types of attacks: snapping or bumping. Lock snapping is where pressure is applied to the lock, causing it to snap at its weakest point and giving criminals access to the locking mechanism to open the door. Bumping a lock is where the locking mechanism is tricked into thinking the correct key has been inserted into the lock. With little noise and in a matter of seconds a burglar can be in your home The solution. The likelihood is, if you have not asked for specific safety measures on your locks, you will have the most common lock, the euro cylinder lock, which is what criminals look for! There are a number of secure locks available, which offer increased security for your home. The standard lock to ask for is the Sold Secure SS312 or the TS007 3 star. When checking or replacing your lock, it should be anti-snap, anti-drill, pick safe and bump resistant to stop you from becoming a victim of burglary. South Yorkshire Police are asking you to check your current lock. They would advise that, if necessary and for little cost, you change your lock to a snap and bump safe lock to increase your home’s security. If you are unsure about what type of lock you have, contact an approved locksmith or the door manufacturer or supplier. To find a local locksmith who is a member of the Master Locksmith Association, visit: www.locksmiths.co.uk, or alternatively refer to your Yellow Pages. Secured By Design is a company owned and operated by the Association of Chief Police Officers, who offer approved locks and advice. Know Your Rights with your Christmas shopping, Citizens Advice North East Doncaster urges. Citizens Advice North East Doncaster is reminding residents to go back to retailers if they are sold faulty electrical goods this Christmas. The call comes as part of National Consumer Week (Monday 28th November - Sunday 4 December) which focuses on what people should do if something goes wrong with electrical goods such as laptops, TVs and mobile phones. Research from the national charity released today reveals that two thirds (66%) of people had a problem with a faulty electrical item in the last two years. However, 1 in 4 (28%) people were initially turned away by retailers when they tried to get a repair, replacement or refund, despite the retailer having a responsibility to offer a solution. The survey also showed that persistence paid off, with 61% of those who were turned away eventually getting some form of solution from the retailer. Every year, North East Doncaster Citizens Advice helps a substantial number of people with queries around consumer rights. The survey findings suggest that both shoppers and retailers may not be aware of their rights and responsibilities around faulty electrical goods. As Christmas shopping gets underway, the charity is sharing top tips to help shoppers to get “switched on” to their consumer rights, so they can get problems with electrical goods solved. Karen Bothamley, Chief Executive Officer of Citizens Advice North East Doncaster said: “This Christmas people don’t need to be stuck with electrical goods that don’t work. “Knowing your rights means that if something goes wrong, you can approach the retailer for a repair, refund or replacement confident in the knowledge that they should help you find a solution. “We would encourage shoppers to have a quick read of our top tips so they know where they stand, or contact us if they need further advice. To speak to an adviser, phone us Mondays to Wednesdays on 0344 499 4137” Electrical goods - what you need to know. Don’t put up with broken electrical goods - if an item breaks and it’s not your fault, you have a right to a free repair, replacement or refund depending when and where you bought it. Use the Citizens Advice faulty goods tool to work out what you’re entitled to. What to do when an item is faulty. Don’t attempt to fix it yourself - this could stop you getting redress because it will make it harder to prove you did not cause the fault. You may also risk injuring yourself. Return it to the retailer - It’s the responsibility of the retailer to help you resolve the problem, not the manufacturer. They should cover the costs of returning the item - contact them first to check the best way to do this and to negotiate an option that’s most convenient for you. Getting a repair, replacement or refund. Bought within the last 30 days - you can get a refund on a faulty product. Bought within the last 6 months - you are entitled to have it repaired or replaced once. If the item still doesn’t work you should get a full refund. Bought more than 6 months ago - you may still get a repair or replacement but you will only get a partial refund to reflect the use you’ve got out of the item. You’ll need to prove you didn’t cause the fault which may make it harder to get redress.

Repair doesn’t work? If you have one repair and it doesn’t succeed, you can ask for a full or partial refunding, depending on when the purchase was made. Replaced with something different? The retailer should try to replace the item like-forlike. This may not always be possible, so if you’re offered something you don’t want you can ask for a refund. What to do when an item is unsafe Stop using it - and unplug it if applicable. Inform Trading Standards -report it via the Citizens Advice consumer service on 03454 04 05 06, or 03454 04 05 05 for Welsh speakers. If it gets recalled, follow the manufacturer’s guidance - this could include not leaving the item unattended when in use. For peace of mind you may want to stop using it altogether. Community News The Friends of Edenthorpe War Memorial The Friends of Edenthorpe War Memorial organised the Remembrance Day Service on behalf of Edenthorpe Parish Council. The weather was very kind and it gave us very beautiful November morning of cold bright sunshine. At 10 30am a parade marched from the Church of the Good Shepherd headed by the Rev Steven Beck. The parade was made up of over 70 members of the Scouts Guides Cubs and Brownies lead by Mr Chris Tidmarch that included 4 standard bearers along with members of the Church and EDENTHORPE parishioners. At 10.50am the service was opened by the vicar greeting the many who attending the service, this was followed Mr D Milnes reading Roll Call of the fallen and prayers were said. The bugler sounded the last post a two minutes silence was observed followed by the bugler sounding reveille. Other prayers were said by members of the war memorial group and members of the fallen. I looked around and many eyes were filled with tears A wreath of poppies was laid by Dame Rosie Winterton M.P. President of the Edenthorpe WMG. Doncaster MBC attended and laid tributes. The Chairman of the Edenthorpe Parish Mr Fred Gee laid a wreath for the village. Many other parishioners and families of the fallen laid tributes also making a total of over 20 wreaths and many more single poppies were laid by children and parents. Two senior scouts stood at the side of the war memorial to assist in laying the wreaths. Old military people placed their own wreath and recalled many past friends. After the service ended many pictures were taken and greetings were exchanged. Many people came to Waggies to hear and have a natter also to have refreshments. Dame Rosie Winterton M.P. said it was a fitting tribute to the fallen to see so many people attending. Dame Rosie also thanked Tesco for providing the refreshments and Sainsbury for donating 2 new flags for the memorial. A sale of mugs commemorating the occasion raised over £120 To say the least a magnificent number of people attended the service conducted by the new vicar Rev Steven Beck. The number was estimated to be over 300, included babies in arms young families to senior citizens. The only downside to the service was that many people could not hear all that was taking place. So to resolve this, the Friends of Edenthorpe War Memorial will seek a donation to buy a good sound system to be used by the parish. We would like to thank Doncaster MBC gardeners who make a magnificent display of Blue Pansies at the memorial site As said, the Edenthorpe War Memorial is built and the WM Group has is now disbanded. It will assist Edenthorpe parish Council and it has agreed to organise the Remembrance day for the PC. The group will be known as Friends of Edenthorpe War Memorial, who are now looking to get the sound system bought. The memorial is a national registered war memorial. We have enjoyed working with the many business and many donators who have helped us fulfil the dream we had of building a fitting tribute to the brave fallen named on of EDENTHORPE War Memorial I have now taken to my rocking chair and will sit back and enjoy the many wonderful memories I have of Edenthorpe doing the project .Of people young and old who without them our dream would never have become a reality. Good Bye and Thank you all for many nice memories. Harold Scrivens
