St. Oswald's Church, Sandall Lane, Kirk Sandall. This church, mentioned in the Domesday Book, is over 900 years old and stands where the original old village of Kirk Sandall once stood down by the canal. It was replaced as the parish church by The Church of the Good Shepherd on Church Balk, Edenthorpe in 1978 but because of its age and architectural importance was taken into the care of The Churches Conservation Trust. The Friends of St. Oswald's has Open Days each month during the summer so why not come along and see an amazing survivor or our community's heritage. For our first Open Day we will have on display some of the work done by pupils of Y3 at Kirk Sandall Junior School following their visit to the church before Christmas. For further information visit our website at stoswaldskirksandall.co.uk Open Days 2017 Sunday May 21st 12noon-4.00pm Thursday May 25th. Community News DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. In a change to our advertised programme on Monday 3 April, when Martin Johnson was unable to be with us because of a family emergency, one of our members stepped in at the last minute with a presentation entitled “Thirty Three Flaming Years”, which was a strong clue that he had served in the Fire and Rescue Service, first in the Doncaster Brigade and then in the South Yorkshire organisation. He told us how he joined as young man and progressed through the ranks, interspersing it with accounts of fires and rescues which he had attended. These included the Huge explosion and fire at the chemical works at Flixborough, and a huge road traffic accident on the A18 in which there was a tanker full of diesel fuel white driver was trapped and had to be rescued. We we all informed and entertained by Michael who illustrated his talk with some fine photos of fire officers, events and vehicles used throughout the history of Fire and Rescue Brigades. There was no meeting on April 17 which was Easter Monday, and so our next one is on Monday 1 May when Steve Payne will be talking about “Myanmar The Time Machine”. Then on Monday 15 May Peter Davies will be talking about the “Experiences of Elected Mayor”. Our meetings for the rest of the year can be viewed online at www.probuseonline.org. Click on ‘Clubs’, then ‘Register of Clubs’, ‘Yorkshire’ and finally ‘Danum (South Yorkshire)’ which will get you to our page. Scroll down to see the list of meetings. Any interested men who would like to come the meetings as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Geoff Firth (01302 849734), David Allen (01302 885813 or John Gregory (01302 532032) for more information.
