Branton St Wilfrid’s School News Year 5 and 6 Visit to the Astrosphere On Tuesday 28th January 2014 Class 5 and 6 enjoyed a visit from the Astrosphere an inflatable Space Dome. Inside the dome we met Steve who took us on a tour of the night skies. Steve showed us all of the constellations and we learned about some of the stories behind them. We also learned about the other planets in the Solar System and Space Tourism. Steve even showed us a rock which came from a Meteor that hit the Earth a long time ago. It was out of this world! Young Voices at Sheffield Arena Our worship group, Jubilate, once again took part in the Young Voices Choir event at Sheffield Arena on Monday 20th January. They joined children from other Choirs in the region to rehearse and perform to a packed house. They had a rather late night and we had some tired pupils in school the next day but a good time was had by all. We were very proud of our children’s conduct and how well they represented the school. The School Learning Environment Staff have been working incredibly hard to develop our learning environment to support children’s learning and promote independence. We are really proud of how bright, colourful and stimulating our school looks and invited parents to come in and look round. We were pleased to receive so much positive feedback from parents.

News From Auckley School Year 2 -China and Chinese New Year. On 31st January, Year 2 celebrated the Chinese New Year by having a party in their classroom. As is the Chinese tradition, they had to prepare the classroom by cleaning and tidying it ready to let the New Year in. They tried lots of food including spring rolls, prawn toast, noodles and fried rice; they had to eat all this using only chopsticks! Not only did they eat with them they also attempted the chopstick challenge! They had one minute to move food from one plate to another using only chopsticks! Reception Pets and Wildlife Reception has been working on an exciting topic all about animals. Fantastically, they spent a day at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and had the opportunity to hold mini beasts, a bearded dragon, a tiger’s claw and tooth and finally some camel’s fur! They learned lots of interesting facts about pets and wildlife. Did you know that a giraffe has 7 bones in its neck – the same as humans? Sporting Achievements Auckley athletes attained second place in two sports this term. Our netball and athletics teams did us proud by bringing the silver medals home!

NEWS FROM ST OSWALDS ACADEMY, FINNINGLEY Back in the Arrow. A quick catch up and the story so far this school year… Parents, carer’s teachers and pupils were treated to the annual nativity play performed by the Key Stage 1 children. They enthusiastically re-enacted the story and celebration of Jesus’s birth and the new reception children were equally excited about performing for their parents for the first time. St Oswald’s Academy's Christmas festivities were kicked off with the children enjoying the school’s staff being embarrassed by the actors in a performance of the pantomime of ‘Mother Goose’. Other seasonal events included the very successful Christmas fair, the children’s Christmas parties, the carol service at St Oswald’s church for the students and their families, and of course a visit from Father Christmas himself. The children also donated to the Doncaster Food Bank which is the schools chosen charity this school year 2013/14. The New Year was kicked off with the head teacher Mr Hall introducing ‘KOBOS E-READERS’ to staff and pupils. These were bought by the school to provided students access to new technology as well as an infinite amount of reading and study material. In order for a whole class to use them, 'THE FRIENDS OF ST OSWALDS ACADEMY ‘ fundraisers took great delight in generously donating another enough to provide each student in the class with a reader. Covers for all the KOBOS EBooks were also donated by ‘THE FRIENDS’. E-books can be downloaded 8 times per purchase, therefore cutting the schools cost of buying conventional books by up to 95%. Next year’s YR6 project, Young Sherlock has been purchased for a fraction of its usual cost. We hope the children will take great pride in having the opportunity to learn from this technology. Key stage 1’s ‘Little Leaders’ were put through their paces by the Active Fusion group, who were there to help teach the children to provide support to classmates in the playground with all kinds of fun and games. St Oswald’s was also very fortunate this year to belong to the choir of Young Voices 2014. This is first year they have participated and it will be something they will never forget. Mr Hall, Miss Williams and other members of staff had practiced along with pupils from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 various songs and compilations to help provide a fantastic night for all their family and friends. Thousands of children from schools all over the north added their voices to the huge choir who sang along with X Factor star Stacy Soloman. As one child said “ It will live with me Forever, it was fantastic”

Well done to all those pupils who entertained us and thank you to those who supported them, it was a great night. The children also had Valentine’s day to look forward to with a School Disco planned by ‘The Friends Of St Oswald’s’ fundraisers, along with a post box for secret admirers to send their anonymous Valentine Cards.

SPRING 2014 NEWSLETTER 2014/15 Annual Precept After careful consideration the parish council determined that the annual precept for 2014/15 should be increased as the amount of reserves has reduced due to cost of installing mains drainage to Kilham Hall. The total revenue that will be raised will increase by approximately 6% to £28,790, however due to an increase in the number of council tax payers the average increase to householders will be only 0.3%.
Parking on Grass Verges Following complaints received and a number of referrals from the Parish Council DMBC has agreed to reseed areas of the grass verges on Doncaster Road in early Spring. Residents are requested to refrain from parking on the verges in order to allow re-growth to take place. In the event of further damage to the verges DMBC has agreed that measures can be enacted to prevent parking in order to maintain the appearance of the verges for the benefit of residents.
Speeding Traffic Residents from Whiphill Top Lane have contacted the Council to express concern over the dangers caused by speeding traffic and the police have been asked by the council to continue the use of the speed gun around the parish to improve the safety of pedestrians particularly children. The police have agreed that speeding is a key priority and will increase the usage of the speed gun as the weather improves.
Christmas Carol Singing Thank you to all the residents who again attended the very enjoyable Christmas Carol Singing event at Kilham Hall on Wednesday 11 December. A special thank you also goes to Mr Littlewood for volunteering to play the organ, St Wilfrid’s School for arranging the attendance of the Jubilate Choir and to Father Christmas for his visit. If anyone wishes to give feedback or has ideas for this year’s event please notify Councillor Michelle Sidebottom or the Clerk to the Council. The proceeds of the raffle were donated to the Harry Matthews Bowel Transplant Fund, Jubilates chosen charity.
The Parish Council would like to wish everyone a very happy Easter.

FAB Parish
Revd Neil Redeyoff and Revd Louise Tinniswood
Don’t judge a book by its cover. I'm in my element at the moment because last night I watched the opening ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics and I'm now looking forward to a fortnight of snow and ice based sports that don't normally get much coverage in the media. I myself am a skier although I hasten to add not quite to Olympic standard! I find the freedom I feel whilst heading down a slope, the views from the chair lifts and the atmosphere in the ski resorts give just the right combination of beauty and exertion to truly enable me to relax whilst on holiday.
The thing we don't see when we watch the Olympics, or any other high level sporting competition, is the preparation and dedication put in by the athletes in the run up to the event. When we watch someone achieve an Olympic record ski jump or beat their personal best at speed skating they can make it seem effortless but we all know the athlete has had to make sacrifices and dedicate their life to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and hours and hours of practice and training in order to be able to attain that level of achievement. Because we understand to a certain extent the struggle an athlete goes through to achieve great things we tend to view them in a different way to how we see 'ordinary' people and yet perhaps we shouldn't. Just as we can't fully realise how much strength and dedication is needed by an athlete to achieve their goals neither can we fully understand the struggles the individuals around us is going through. When we see someone at a bus stop we are likely to be unaware of what troubles they have in their lives. They may live alone and need to go out each day simply to seek out human company, they may struggle with leaving the house and simply going to the shops once a week causes them high levels of anxiety, or maybe they are going to visit someone in hospital and whilst they love that person with their whole heart, visiting them every day for two months is becoming too much. Some people’s achievements are self-evident. When we see someone receiving a medal it’s obvious what’s going on (on the outside at the least). Christians believe that God loves everyone equally. We are all a work in progress and all part of the same race - the human race. It’s important to be kind to everyone especially as it’s often very difficult to tell what struggles in life a person is going through in life. Revd. Louise Tinniswood St Saviour’s, Auckley and St Oswald’s & Holy Trinity, Finningley
