Community News
Home-Start Doncaster, a registered charity, has been helping parents to build better lives for their children for 30 years. The early years before children start school are vital in a child's life. At Home-Start we believe parents play the key role in creating a secure childhood for their children. It's just sometimes they need a bit of help! Our home-visiting volunteers are committed, caring people who offer their time freely to support local families who have at least one child under the age of five. Volunteers are usually parents themselves, or have parenting experience, and bring with them personal experience and skills. They are friendly, approachable, reliable and can be trusted by parents to listen without being judgemental. If you feel you have what it takes to become a Home-Start home-visiting volunteer we would love to hear from you. We offer a highly regarded Preparation Course which is held one day a week over nine weeks. This will prepare you for home visiting, and give you a thorough understanding of the role of a Home-Start volunteer. Your work may be accredited at Level 2 if you wish. Once linked with a family you will visit them on a weekly basis for 2-3 hours providing support with a wide range of difficulties such as providing an extra pair of hands for parents with twins or being a friend to a single parent who feels isolated. You should be able to stay in the role for at least a year. For more information please telephone 01302 0340856 or email homestart@doncaster.gov.uk for details of our next course starting in April 2015.

Please be aware of the following: The Yorkshire and Humber Region has seen a significant increase in reports of vulnerable people being ‘cold called’ by Bogus Police Officers over the telephone. To date there have been over 46 reports across the region of victims being phoned by offenders impersonating a police officer. Victims are told their bank account has been compromised and they need to transfer money to another account or hand it directly to a ‘Police Officer’. During the conversation the fraudsters will ‘connect’ the victim to their bank to confirm what they are saying but this connection will be false. Victims are encouraged to hang up and wait 5 minutes to ensure the connection has been cleared and then contact their banks or use a mobile phone to make the call. The public are reminded that the Police will never ‘cold call’ and ask personal details about bank accounts. If anyone is worried or has been contacted by these bogus Police Officers please contact the Police on 101 or if it’s happening at the time 999.

MIXED EMOTIONS
AGAINST ADWICK FOR HAYFIELD Hayfield’s Year 10 team were very unlucky on Monday 2nd March as they went down by 2 goals to 1 in their tight encounter away to Outwood Adwick. The home side took the lead inside the first 5 minutes, when the ball was tapped home from 2 yards after a tame shot that looked to be going wide was pounced on by the onrushing Adwick striker. Immediately after the half-time break David Fairweather pulled a goal for Hayfield with a brilliant strike from the edge of the area into the bottom right corner, leaving the keeper with no choice. However, they were pegged back in the closing minutes , in what was an entertaining game in tricky conditions. However, the Year 9 team faired much better, defeating Outwood 9-0 at home, with 2 goals apiece coming from both Oliver Day-Ramsey and Drew Budtz, with 5 more players getting on the score sheet. The Year 8 boys went three better as they swept aside the hosts Outwood with their goals coming courtesy of players all over the pitch in their magnificent 12-0 triumph. In the final game against Outwood Adwick, the Year 7’s were in action, and they triumphed 2-1, with their goals coming from Jay Riley and Tom Bardell, completing the action for Hayfield on what was an eventful evening of football. Reported by Brandon Hazelwood and Alex Gibbings, Hayfield School

School News From Auckley Academy
Crucial Crew This term, Auckley School’s year 6 class travelled to Rotherham in order to take part in the Crucial Crew experience. The aim of Crucial Crew is to provide Year 6 pupils with the necessary life skills to cope with and evade a range of potentially hazardous situations. The children encountered real life emergency situations and learnt how to deal with them appropriately – through interpreting the state of affairs, acting rationally and calling for help if needed. All in all, the day out was a fantastic experience - one that they will most certainly carry forward to High School and beyond.

World Book Day The teachers at Auckley School got a bit of a fright this term as their classrooms were invaded by a number of fictional characters from a host of famous children’s books. However, on closer inspection, the characters were in fact Auckley’s very own pupils. The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to discover the pleasures of books and reading.
Cast Year 1 took the short trip this term to Doncaster’s new theatre, ‘Cast’, in order to sample to live performance on a very familiar topic. Two children’s books were portrayed to the children in a way far removed from their usual classroom environment – read alongside a live orchestral ensemble. As the lights dimmed, the anticipation and intrigue from parents, children and teaching staff alike was almost tangible. Through the advent of a musical score, the text appeared to come to life in front of their eyes as gasps, cheers and a chorus of belly laughter echoed back from the audience.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL APRIL NEWSLETTER Parish Precept The parish precept is the amount of money we ask Doncaster Council to collect on our behalf and, apart from football rents, the precept is Council's only source of income. This year the precept has been increased to £30,000 in order to undertake some extensive renovation work on the recreation ground.
Wild Flowers on Riverside Park The Parish Council has arranged for the planting of wild flower seeds on the field alongside the football pitch and in front of the poplar trees which will provide a colourful display during the Summer months. The soil will be harrowed, seeded and then rolled. Once the work has been undertaken it would be appreciated if walkers using the riverbank could avoid this area and use another access onto the banking.
Dogs Fouling Pavements After a relatively quiet spell we have recently seen an increase in pavements contaminated with dog excreta, particularly those on School Lane where children walk on their way to and from school. Parish Councillors are monitoring the situation, and members of the public can help by reporting any dog owners who do not clean up after their pets in a public place.
New 'Auckley' Village Sign A second 'Auckley' village sign is now in situ on the grass verge at Hurst Lane. Council is grateful to Barratt/David Wilson Homes who have very kindly built and funded the sign in the interests of the local community.
Green Recycling Boxes Some green boxes are left out on collection day without lids and unfortunately this leads to paper and plastic items spilling out and blowing onto the highway and pavements. New lids can be obtained from Doncaster Council by ringing 01302 736000 or by speaking to a member of the recycling collection team.

Full of the Joys of Spring In 2013 the date the clocks went back coincided with Easter Sunday. This meant the 7am sunrise service in Finningley on Easter Sunday, felt like 6am and resulted in me setting my alarm for what was mentally 4:45am. I was convinced I was going to sleep in and looked at the clock every twenty minutes through the night. Neil did pretty much the same thing and by the time the sunrise service and the two Easter Sunday celebration services were over we were bordering on delirious! It takes me at least a week to recover from ‘loosing’ an hour’s sleep each year and I wonder every time we do it ‘Is this really necessary?’ I’m not going to debate the rights and wrongs of moving from GMT to BST but to comment on the difference a bit of daylight can make. There is a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder and sufferers become depressed during the winter moths due to a lack of natural daylight. Whilst I’m certain I don’t suffer from this I really do appreciate it when we start to get longer days. I love it when I start to notice that we are putting the lights on later and in the morning it no longer feels like we’re getting out of bed in the middle of the night. The length of the working day used to be far more governed by natural daylight. People worked when it was light and rested when it was dark Parish Church Service Times and I think we’d benefit from going back to this The pattern for worship at both churches is varied, way of thinking to some extent. Working ranging from traditional to contemporary. shorter days in the winter and longer days in Our monthly pattern of worship is outlined below. the summer would surely allow our working 1st Sunday patterns to fit more readily with our energy 9.15am: Finningley - Family Communion. levels. We must however resist the temptation 11.15am: Finningley - Baptisms by arrangement to work whilst ever it’s daylight. 11.00am: Auckley - All Age Communion In the Bible there is a story about Mary and Martha who Jesus visits in their home. Martha rushes around preparing refreshments whilst Mary sits at the feet of Jesus and listens to him. Martha points this inequality out to Jesus who says it is Mary who is doing the right thing. Sometimes the right thing for us to do is to stop and rest from the hustle and bustle of the day and listen for God’s voice and look for his hand at work. As the days get longer and the evenings get lighter we should resist the temptation to simply work longer hours and instead use the extra hours of daylight to recharge our batteries. Revd.
