Welcome to the April issue of
Branton & Auckley Arrow Hip hip hooray, at last, we can meet up outside with our friends once again! From 12th April, we can go shopping, have our hair cut, visit YWP and have a drink in a beer garden. As life edges slowly back to normal, Doncaster currently celebrates being one of the leading areas in it’s successful roll out of the vaccine. Well done Doncaster and to the amazing staff and volunteers who have made this happen. Community groups which have not been able to meet throughout the last year, are at last making plans for reopening with hopefully everyone back to normal by September 2021. Auckley Show plans are well underway for what will be a big community celebration and birthdays, anniversaries, weddings and special family occasions are something we can all look forward to celebrating again with our family and friends. Just want to say a special good luck to all of our local hospitality venues, personal care businesses and anyone who has had to suspend all work or reinvent their services to get through this pandemic, I hope everything goes your way from now on. The deadline for the May issue is Wednesday 14th April. The May issue will be distributed the last weekend in April
Happy Easter Michelle Sidebottom

Community News Black Carr Plantation After recent concerns were raised regarding the illegal felling of trees at Black Carr Plantation in Branton, Cantley with Branton Parish Council raised the issue with ward Councillor Allen Jones at their February meeting. Councillor Jones asked that anyone with information should contact him. The Finningley Ward councillors provided a brief update on developments on Thursday 18th March. ‘DMBC will be doing regular patrols following the illegal felling of trees. Signs will be being put at entrances to remind people that removing timber is illegal. SYP are following up lines of enquiry and ask anyone with any information to contact them.’

DONCASTER WHEATSHEAF SINGERS REUNION UPDATE It is with sadness and regret that the Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers have to announce that the plans to hold their delayed 70th Anniversary Reunion on 12th June 2021 have once again had to been cancelled due to the latest Covid-19 Government restrictions. As this reunion of past and present members and associates was originally due to take place during the anniversary year in 2020 it was felt that a further postponement, rather than cancellation, was no longer an option. Who knows, maybe we could host a 75th Anniversary Reunion in 2025! The choir are, however, hoping that some concerts, including the Charity Christmas Concert at the Minster, may begin in the Autumn/Winter of this year if all restrictions are lifted as planned. The choir are looking forward to face to face rehearsals commencing in May or June when guidance allows under the baton of their new Musical Director Ray Gallagher. Ray brings with him a wealth of musical expertise and experience and is no stranger to the choir as he has previously deputised as their accompanist. If anyone is interested in joining the DWS when rehearsals begin please feel free to contact their Chairperson Dorothy Miller on 07703358889 or email sec@wheatsheafsingers.co.uk for further information. Visit our website on www.wheatsheafsingers.co.uk or our Facebook page on Facebook.com@DWSingers Like us, I am sure there are a number of people who cannot wait to get out and start singing or attending concerts. In the meantime please stay safe and well until we can all meet up again.

The last couple of months we have been sending our supporters a letter with suggestions on how best to renew. We thank you for your continued support. Any new members can apply on line through our website. www.auckley.show.co.uk or give me a call to arrange 01302 770818. Sponsors and financial supporters We have always enjoyed excep onal support from our local businesses and residents. Every dona on, however small, has always made a difference and this year is no excep on. In fact, this year we need financial support more than ever because we will be pu ng extra measures in place to ensure everyone’s safety
A community event, like ours, is something that everyone can look forward to. It’s free to get in and free to enter the produce compe ons so every person, every child, can feel part of our great community. A winner’s rose e always brings a smile and for some people that feeling will be even more special a er months of restric ons.
However small your dona on or sponsorship, the community will be very grateful. We’re eager to hear from anyone who is in a posi on to donate. There are many sponsorship opportuni es for those needing local exposure so please, if you can afford to, help a community pull together and put some rose e smiles back on some local faces.

We will con nue with the draw and pay out our £100 prize each month.
Could I ask current members to consider renewing their number by visi ng our web site (auckleyshow.co.uk) and pay on line? I am also willing to take telephone payment pledges at this me on 770818. Or, you could put £10 in an envelope, with your name and address and an email or telephone number, through my le erbox at 23 Ellers Lane Auckley DN93HY....part of your daily exercise perhaps!! If you would like to join the draw as a new member do the same. £10 gets 12 months entry into the draw and winners will be published on our website and in the Arrow Magazine. You don’t have to live in Auckley to visit or support our show.
Tombola Due to the current situa on we have taken the decision not to go ahead with the Tombola for 2021. As you know we get many dona ons for this fundraiser. This will leave a big hole in the finances. If you could consider dona ng in other ways for 2021 it would be appreciated.

Auckley Show Saturday 21st August 2021 Martin Kaye will perform at the family Disco Friday 6pm to 9pm 20th August and the night event Saturday 21st August 2021 alongside the Bierkeller Schunklers German themed Oopah Band to create the biggest party ever in the long history of the Auckley Show. Martin talks of his career and his journey to Auckley Show 2021... My Disc Jockey career that started way back in 1976 in my home town of Rugby in the Midlands. Like many, I started with a mobile discotheque and worked in The Crown pub and Emmeline’s Nightclub until I was asked if I would like to travel to Skegness for the summer season of 1980 and work as a Butlin’s Redcoat and resident DJ entertaining the many thousand holiday makers flocking to the East coast. After the summer season, I wanted to spread my wings and after talking to a DJ at “The Mardi Gras Club” in Skegness, that we Reds frequented on our one day off, he gave me a business card for a entertainments agency that offered work in Europe and Scandinavia and I was invited to take a six month tour of Norway, working in prestigious hotels and nightclub venues around the country and even taking me north above the arctic circle to The Lofoten Islands and further north to Tromsø (called Paris of the north).

In the mid 80`s, vinyl records were being used less and less and CD`s were taking over the market, I embraced this as they were a lot lighter to carry around on the road than my record collection, even though the vinyl sound could never be replicated. Having my vinyl collection from the late 50`s to the late 80`s, these were my work tools that always needed to be kept up to date. As a professional Disc Jockey one of my philosophies has always been to keep my customers satisfied by playing the requests they asked for. While working in the city of Trondheim in 1985, I was asked to work on a local radio station broadcasting a lunchtime show twice weekly, this was where I caught the bug for radio. After a period of 16 years, living on The Lofoten Islands I moved back down to Trondheim in 2009, where I worked in hotels and corporate venues and again on Radio Trondheim having a daily lunchtime 12 till 2 pm show. In 2017, I chose to return to good old blighty to my roots in Rugby, I had through the years kept in touch with a good friend from Auckley and visited on several occasions. While searching for property the area of Doncaster was recommended and at the beginning of 2018 a house in Auckley became available which I purchased. Through recommendations from another friend from Hull I was put in touch with ELITE Sound based in Leeds, who had venues within South Yorkshire, so I was back on the road again driving most weekends to and from wedding venues, family celebrations, Christmas and New Year parties, pub quiz nights or corporate events. This all came to a halt in March 2020 due to Covid 19 lockdown rules within the hospitality industry. But, when one door closes others may open….. In the brief days of the summer of 2020, when traditional recognition and remembrance of VE Day & VJ Day, I had the urge like many to be outdoors, so I set up my sound system in my front garden on Spey Drive and entertained my lovely
neighbours with nostalgic music from the 1940`s & 50`s. My friend from Hull and fellow DJ who was now living in Switzerland and also broadcasting for multiple radio stations called me and asked if I was interested in joining one of the radio stations he was broadcasting on. In August 2020, I was back on air with the first of my radio shows in a while, on Friday nights 8 – 10 pm “Funky Friday” in “The Comfort Zone” on Total Radio UK which is also broadcast by a Dutch radio station based in Amsterdam. I now also broadcast Monday 6 – 8 pm and simulcast to Hollands Palet radio station in The Hague and Total Radio UK, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 12 noon until 2 pm on Total Radio UK, with a format of 60`s 70`s 80`s and 90`s music, we broadcast via the world wide web, Tune In App and your smart speaker such as Amazon Alexa. I look forward to being a part of The Auckley Show 2021, as in the previous three years I have lived here, I have been unable to attend due to professional engagements in Leeds.
Best regards Martin Kaye The Party Zone

Doncaster Carer’s Group All Age Carers enquiries@makingspace.co.uk
Hello Everyone Family carers provide care by looking after a frail, ill or a disabled family member, friend or partner. At the beginning of April 2020 (during lockdown) a group of carers from Doncaster formed an All Age Carer’s Action Group via monthly Zoom meetings where we discuss various topics. This is a great opportunity to keep connected and updated when speakers (NHS, Local Authority & other organisations) attend with useful information for carers e.g. Carers nominated card, Family Carer PPE, Parent carer pathway and Short breaks. A Carer voice diary about a carer’s life during lockdown was completed for Radio Sheffield. The “Voice of the carer” was an article provided to the free press by some group members. We need your views to ensure we focus on the most important things for carers with live-in experience. Our voices have been heard and changes have been made to help carers. Current and former carers can join our meeting even if you only have 10 minutes to spare, or if you want to talk to someone about your caring role please contact: Doncaster Carer’s Reach Out service – 01302 986900 or email address above who provide support for our group to make this happen. Meetings for 2021 from 10am-12noon on: April 20th / May 17th / June 15th / July 20th / August 17th / September 21th / October 19th / November 16th / December 21st. Hope to see you soon Kay - Chair, Geoff - Co-Chair

Auckley Parish Council March/April Newsletter The Annual Parish Meeting The Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Wednesday, 14th April, commencing at 6.00 p.m. and will be immediately followed by the normal April Parish Council Meeting. Both of these events will be virtual, due to the current lockdown, and anyone wishing to join either meeting should contact the Clerk for details. The Annual Parish Meeting gives members of the public an opportunity to discuss any matters relevant to Auckley Parish, and agendas will be displayed on the notice boards outside the Auckley and Hayfield Lane Primary Schools and also in the window of the Chinese Takeaway Shop at Ellers Lane. Collecting Litter The Parish Council wishes to thank residents who have been seen collecting items of rubbish left lying on the ground, i.e. bottles, cartons, sweet wrappers, etc. and depositing them in the litter bins provided. Your actions are greatly appreciated. Stencils on footways Residents have expressed concerns that footways at School Lane and Ellers Lane are regularly being fouled by dogs, and this is particularly unpleasant for children walking on their way to school. Doncaster Council has agreed to paint “Pick it Up” stencils on the affected areas to hopefully encourage dog owners to use the dog waste bins. Anti-Social Behaviour Council is aware that incidents of anti-social activity are occurring at various sites within the Parish, and these have been reported to South Yorkshire Police. Patrols are currently being undertaken, and we will continue to monitor the situation.

St Wilfrid’s Church, Cantley
An Easter message from our Vicar…. As I write this, the crocuses and snowdrops are starting to appear in my garden, bringing a feeling of new life, joy and hope. We’ve needed every sign of hope and every form of resilience over this last year during the pandemic. After the long restrictions, and after such loss, it has been a hard time to bear. At Easter time we are presented with a message of hope. On Good Friday all seems dark and lost. Good Friday tells us of death on a Cross and a body quickly laid to rest in a tomb. But this was not the end. On Easter Sunday morning, before daylight, a group of women approached the tomb and the stone at its entrance had been rolled away. The angel said, “He is not here.” It’s a strange thing to say; it was baffling. But the angel also said, “He is risen.” We have been living through dark and strange times, but Good Friday was not the end; it was not the final answer. “He is risen.” Christ’s victory had been won, carrying with it hope, joy, and peace. Through God’s grace, may our longing, aching and hurting world experience that same Easter joy, bringing us a sense of hope for the future. With Easter blessings.

The return to school on the 8th March was certainly a reason to celebrate. Every child came back with such a positive attitude and showed just how resilient and versatile our youngsters are. The second lock down has certainly reinforced what a great relationship the school and parents have at Misson Primary School and how good we have worked as a team since the start of the pandemic. The amazing words of encouragement our staff team has received from parents, carers and grandparents has been so well received and quite overwhelming. To be welcomed by a ‘Thank You’ sign attached to our fence, made by one family in the village really was the icing on the cake. Let’s hope we are back for good so we can once again look forward to the brighter, warmer days of the summer term.
Happy Easter everyone.

DONCASTER RAMBLERS Independent Walk Routes around Doncaster Please take care when walking and follow the Countryside Code. Follow government guidelines, you can walk outdoors once a day as part of your daily exercise – by yourself, with members of your household or support bubble, or with one other person. Only walk locally. Denaby Ings Linear This is an easy walk on metalised surfaces (unless taking the river route) suitable for families with pushchairs, bikes, and wheelchairs. Good parking is provided at the Denaby Ings Nature Reserve and the route follows the Trans-Pennine Trail from Denaby Ings to the Conisbrough Viaduct. Exit the car park and turn left, crossing the River Don then turn left onto the TransPennine Trail towards Conisbrough. After half a mile cross the footbridge and continue on for 640m where the path divides, take the right-hand (lower) branch. (this provides some variety for the return journey) On this outward journey you get various views on Conisbrough Castle. At some point you reach steps on the right, (A on the map) and for mums or dads looking for adventure descend to an alternative route, making sure to leave the remaining family in the care of a responsible adult. Remember in summer this track can be overgrown, and the footpath obscured. If you do chance this route head towards the river edge and then turn left and continue on beside the river until you reach the viaduct go under turn left and walk alongside it until you reach the summit, and are hopefully reunited. Those responsible for wheels continue passed the steps to reach the viaduct ½ mile further on. After taking in the views and the magnificent structure begin to retrace your steps this time to take the left hand (upper) path where you will also find hidden on the right a disused tunnel. The route back is straight forward
