Charity Netball Tournament On Sunday 5th July, ten teams took part in the Carole Taylor Charity Netball Tournament at Hayfield School. The tournament is in memory of Carole whose reputation in netball is one of great respect. Carole was one of the founding members of the Doncaster and District Netball League which started over 30 years ago. The league continues to develop and currently has over 200 members who enjoy regular competitive games at the Hayfield School. Carole was a shinning light within the league where she coached, umpired, played and encouraged women of all abilities to enjoy the game of netball. Carole sadly lost her fight with cancer 3 years ago but her legacy remains. One of the teams competing was the Sheffield Stormers who currently have both Carole's daughters Sarah and Katy playing for them. Stormers are the current National Netball Champions so it was great to have them attend and to watch them play. Carole's former team, Hatfield, also played which was very emotional for the ladies involved. The games were played to a high level with the Sheffield Stormers and Doncaster Dome making it through to the final. This match was hard fought and Stormers were victorious in the end. The results were ultimately unimportant as the tournament had a mix of emotion, humour and sportsmanship. A fantastic ÂŁ1450.00 was raised on the day all to be donated to Myeloma research. Thanks to the Hayfield School for the use of their facilities and all the people involved in making the day so special. The summer league recommences in April 2016, if you are interested in playing as a team or an individual looking for a team place, please email Kath Coulter on kmc3097@gmail.com. Thanks Kath Coulter

Protect what’s important with Aviva Protects Talking about financial protection isn’t easy; after all, people don’t like to think about death or serious illness, let alone consider the financial consequences to their loved ones. I’m Caroline Undrill, your local Aviva Community Protection Adviser. I’ll be there to support you as you take the first step in protecting what’s important. Branton St Wilfrids C of E Primary School
Sports Day On Monday 29th June we had our Sports Day.
In the morning Reception and KS1 had their Sports Day and Year 6 helped out to organise the competitions. The competitions were a sack race, running race, bean bag shuttle and an obstacle race. In the end the Green Team won.
At lunch time we all sat outside, with our parents and friends, and had a picnic lunch. The PTA organised an ice cream van to visit school which was brilliant! Later on in the afternoon was the KS2 Sports Day. The first race we did was running for everyone. Then boys did an obstacle race and the girls did a skipping race. The last race we all did was the relay which only Year 5 and Year 6 took part in. In the end the red team won. By Kelly Wain
Mathematics in the Making Event – Sheffield Winter Gardens On 1st July all of Year 6 from Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School and three other schools from Sheffield went to Sheffield Winter Gardens. We have been working on a project with Sheffield Hallam University called Mathematics on the Making and had created a maths exhibition for the people of Sheffield to come and see. We had 5 different projects to display. One of them was about the Logic Puzzle we made. We basically made a massive poster with pictures of them explaining how we made everything. As an example we made a huge version of a logic puzzle so everyone that came could walk on it as they solved it. There were also four more which were a Maths Trail, Bee hives (made of rhombic dodecahedrons) and tessellating shapes in the style of Escher. Overall this whole day was a great success. Many visitors came to view our projects and all of us had massive fun. But there was only one downfall. Sheffield Winter Gardens is essentially a massive greenhouse and it was 35oC! (The hottest day on record!) By Abhishek Vashista

Farewell to Year 6 ! I don’t know where the year has gone! It doesn’t seem 2 minutes since we started our journey together towards SATS, Y7 transition and our residential. For me it has been a wonderful year where I have had the privilege to get to know 27 fabulous young people. I know they have all worked hard through this year and that they have enjoyed their transition events to introduce them to the secondary schools. They are ready to move on to the next stage of their education…I’m not so sure I am ready to see them go! I will miss every single one of them and hope that they will come back and visit us at Branton St Wilfrid’s to tell me all about their new adventures and experiences.
Sheffield Winter Gardens
I wish you happiness and good health, as well as success for your futures Year 6. I know you will be fabulous! Best wishes, Mrs MacCormack

Born Under the Wings of the Vulcan In this rare opportunity to get up close and personal to an iconic British aircraft, new air cadets, some as young as 12, took part in the biggest enrolment in RAF Air Cadets 75 year history. In February 2015, 1053 Finningley Detached Flight Royal Air Force Air Cadets was born, now the biggest Detached Flight in the country. Its 60 new cadets were excited to meet the Vulcan XH558, the final remaining airworthy model before she is permanently grounded after this season. Following three months of work from volunteers, the facility based at Hill House Independent School is a place where young people aged between 12 and 20 can learn about discipline, public service, aviation and first aid. As well as the enrolment presentation, the history making event included a performance from the band and drill demonstration, Padre blessing and a welcome address from Air Commodore McCafferty, Commandant Air Cadets. The Detached Flight have developed a unique relationship with the Vulcan to the Sky trust and assisted with fundraising events and once established fully they will be named 558 (Finningley) Squadron in honour of her tail plate registration number. Flight Lieutenant John Dale, Officer Commanding of 1053DF said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response from pupils wanting to join and this has meant our numbers have grown to 68 on our books, more than enough to allow us to part from our parent squadron and stand by ourselves. “Soon after we realised this was possible we wanted something very unique for us and we set about trying to locate the ideal squadron number. As we are located in the former Officers Mess building of RAF Finningley, and only a stones throw away from the Hangar housing the last airworthy Vulcan, we crossed our fingers and enquired whether 558 was available for us and we learnt it was. “This has now been highlighted as our number once we establish as a squadron and to mark this and foster strong bonds with the Vulcan to the Sky, we approached them to see if we could use their facilities and have the aircraft in the hangar for the enrolment ceremony. Since then our connections have grown and cadets have helped at numerous events now in the hangar around Vulcan XH558.” The last airworthy Vulcan currently operates at Doncaster Airport and is in her final season of taking to the skies making this special occasion even more memorable as the youth of today begin their cadet experience alongside the much loved veteran RAF aircraft. The RAF Air Cadets is a 55,000 strong youth organisation with over 1000 squadrons and detached flights across the country. Lead by volunteers, cadets get to take part in a wide range of aviation themed activities such as flying and gliding, as well as the duke of Edinburgh Awards, camps, sports and more.

Judges tend to favour cucumber or courgettes with the flower or its remains intact. 4. For the adult class, paintings etc should be nicely framed and clean. Not so important in the children’s class. 5. Cookery classes should be well cooked but not overdone, again make sure you enter the correct quantity. Check that the pastry of custards and flans is fully cooked. 6. Jam, pickles etc should be in clean clear glass containers. 7. Arts and crafts exhibits should be clean and free of creases. 8. To enable judging to be done fairly, please do not put your name on the front of the exhibits. 9. Flowers should be as fresh as possible; dropped petals may loose you points. 10. Wines – although any bottle will be accepted, to really impress the judge use 26 fluid oz clear punted bottles fitted with a flanged cork stopper. Screw tops will be accepted. 11 Beer Lager, any bottle will be accepted but to impress the judge, the use of 1 pint plain brown bottles, sealed with a crown top is ideal. 12. Please do not be afraid to have a go, challenge your neighbour to have a go, a little friendly competition can be good fun. If you are beaten, resolve to win next year. Please Note every effort will be made to look after your exhibits, but accidents do happen. So please do not enter any item of extreme monetary or sentimental value that could possibly be damaged.
AUCKLEY SHOW RULES 1. All exhibits to be staged between 8.30am and 10.45 am on the day. 2. Exhibits must be grown by and be the property of the exhibitor. The exception to this is class 38 and 43 to 50 inclusive and class 102. 3. If, in the opinion of the judges, none of the exhibits in a particular class merit a prize, the committee reserves the right to withhold any prize in that class. 4. The decision of the judges is final and binding. Any protest regarding interpretation of these rules, or any other matter, must be made to the show secretary on the day of the show. 5. No exhibits to be removed before 3.45pm. Exhibits not claimed by 4.00pm will be presumed donated and will be sold. An auction will take place at 4.00pm. The proceeds will be used to cover the cost of the show. 6. The committee will not be liable for damage or loss to persons or property. 7. Exhibits must not have been shown in the previous year. 8. In other respects, the show will be conducted in accordance with the rules and standards of the Royal Horticulture Society, as laid down in their handbook.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER
JULY-AUGUST 2015 Ponding Area at Riverside Park A large hole near the children's play equipment on Riverside Park posed a danger to young children when it filled with water to form a pond after heavy rainfall. The Parish Council approached the Managing Director of the new development currently taking place at the Hurst Lane/Hayfield Lane junction and he arranged to supply and transport a large quantity of soil from the site to our recreation ground in order to fill in the hole and make the area safe. This generous gesture is greatly appreciated.
Meeting to Discuss Fracking Application Council was represented at a recent meeting organised by I Gas, the main contractors for a proposed fracking development at Misson Springs. Although the site is in Nottinghamshire, there could be implications for the local area if the application is approved as this could lead to an increase in traffic through Blaxton and Auckley to access the new link road.
Parking Outside Ellers Lane Shops Parking on double yellow lines outside the shops continues to be a problem, in addition, it was recently observed that some motorists have now taken to parking their vehicles on the footway and grass verge in front of the shops which is extremely dangerous and puts the safety of pedestrians at risk. Doncaster Highways staff have been consulted and will monitor the situation. In addition, a speed car with a camera on board is now being driven at regular intervals past the shops, photographs will be taken of any vehicles parked irresponsibly, and enforcement action taken.
Sighting of Vulcan Residents may have seen over recent weekends the spectacular sight of the Vulcan flying in over Auckley on its return home after completing recent display tours.
Overhanging Trees and Hedges The current warmer temperatures have encouraged the rapid growth of vegetation and led to some hedges and trees overhanging onto adjoining footways. This creates problems for pedestrians, and it would be appreciated if residents could trim back any overhanging branches.
August Meeting There is no Parish Council meeting in August. The next meeting will be held at the Auckley Parish Centre, Main Street, Auckley, on Wednesday, 9th September 2015, commencing at 7.00 p.m.

News From Auckley School
Sporting Glory throughout the School This term has witnessed a succession of sporting triumphs here at Auckley School. The sporting ventures have occurred alongside a period of excellent weather this month which has made the sport even more enjoyable. The Auckley School sports day was a really great day for everyone taking part. Beaming smiles as glowing as the sun shone from parents and pupils alike. For some year 6 pupils however, it would be their very last sports day as they will soon be departing for pastures new at secondary school. The next sporting outing on the agenda was a tag-rugby tournament at Hatchell Wood Primary School. A great time was certainly had by every member of the team, with many of the players scoring tries. Unfortunately, Auckley School narrowly missed out on the Hatchell Wood trophy by 1 point.

Auckley School’s year 3 and 4 combined football team were able to take their achievement one step further than their tag-rugby counterparts by winning a football tournament held at the Hayfield School. All three of Auckley’s team which were entered in the tournament won maximum points and were all crowned champions. Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust – founded 1972, is Doncaster’s oldest local cancer charity and still to this day only exists with voluntary help and the constant support of Doncaster people.
Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust
Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust was launched in 1972 by its present secretary, to purchase first line equipment to diagnose and treat cancer for the inhabitants of Doncaster. Since then we have donated over 92 pieces of equipment to Doncaster Hospitals totalling in excess of £1,500,000 plus building and equipping Doncaster’s St John’s Hospice phase 1 and 2, a further £4,600,000. Our latest project to purchase a £600,000 state of the art MRI Scanner for Doncaster Royal Infirmary was achieved earlier this year and handed over to DRI in February. Our latest project is to purchase a state of the art 3D imaging scanner that will enable Doncaster patients to receive their radiotherapy treatment in Doncaster. (Currently, this treatment is carried out in Sheffield).
If you would like to make a donation or would like to help out at any of our fundraising events, please contact Yvonne Woodcock on 07788 184419 or e-mail info@dcdt.co.uk

Digging for Doncaster volunteers sought for new archaeological exploration History enthusiasts around Doncaster are being given a unique opportunity to get their hands dirty alongside leading archaeologists this summer as part of a fortnight-long dig to try to uncover secrets about the town’s First World War and military history. As part of the Doncaster 1914-18 project, archaeologists will be conducting two weeks of excavations in the grounds of St Peter in Chains Church on Chequer Road – the former location of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry’s Scarbrough Barracks and just a stone’s throw away from the project’s curators at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery. Members of the public will be trained in archaeological techniques, before picking up trowel and brush to see what early 20thcentury stories they can uncover buried beneath the ground. “The dig site in central Doncaster offers a fantastic opportunity for those with an interest in history to work on a real archaeological dig. The site is the location of the former Scarbrough Barracks; these were built shortly after World War I, but prior to this the site was used for military training during the war, so we are hoping to find evidence of what activities were carried out here,” comments project manager, Dr Glyn Davies of ArcHeritage, which has been commissioned to undertake the dig. “A recent dig at what is now the new cultural quarter revealed practice trenches excavated by soldiers training in Doncaster. We don't know if they were undertaking similar training in trenching on the barracks site but the excavation provides us with the opportunity to find out what they were doing.” During the main dig, running from 10 – 22 August, the archaeologists will require 15 – 20 volunteers each day to help dig and process finds – including cleaning, labelling and bagging - but before that, around 5 people per day are needed at the end of July to help with geophysical surveys of the site. “This will give us an indication of the best places to start digging so that we can focus our efforts on parts of the land that have the highest potential to contain archaeological remains,” explains Dr Davies. The volunteering opportunity is open to anyone over the age of 16, and no prior experience is necessary. Training will be provided on the Monday and Wednesday of each week, with volunteers then spending at least a day working on the site. Young archaeologists can also get involved, as those aged between 8 and 16 can join the team if they are accompanied at all times by a parent. “Our team are spending the next four and a half years talking to communities in and around Doncaster about the experiences of their ancestors during the First World War and we are hopeful that this archaeological excavation will help us better understand how we prepared our young men for life on the front line,” says Doncaster 1914-18 Project Manager, Jude Holland. Father Augustine O’Reilly of St Peter in Chain’s Church added, “We are supportive of this project and encourage a good response to the appeal for volunteers. I hope it will be productive and the knowledge gained may be a source of great inspiration to future generations.” Alongside the volunteering opportunities, the dig will be open to the public every day (except Sundays) between 10-22 August, 10am-4pm. On Saturdays 15 August and Saturday 22 August, visitor can join in action packed archaeology open days between 10am-4pm. There will be hands-on activities, and fun for all the family. The Great War on Tour, the Project’s travelling roadshow will be present on both days, presenting a snapshot of Doncaster 1914-18’s latest research. “Once visitors have seen the archaeology in action, they can pop into the museum to learn more about the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry’s role in the War in our new exhibition, ‘A Call To Arms’,” adds Jude. For details on how to register, volunteers should visit www.doncaster1914-18.org.uk or the ArcHeritage website http://www.archeritage.co.uk/news/#790 or contact ArcHeritage, by email diggingfordoncaster@yorkat.co.uk or phone 0114 2728884.
