Welcome to the December issue of the Branton & Auckley Arrow.

Apparently, we will be saying goodbye to the warmest year on record. Let’s hope we don’t pay for it over the winter months with Arctic conditions! We all like a bit of seasonal weather (but just a bit). This month’s issue has lots of information on all the local Christmas fayres, activities and events as well as an update from St Wilfrid’s school on what everyone has been up to this month. All of the primary schools will be busy in December with School plays and concerts so we look forward to finding out about it all in the January issue. Cantley with Branton Parish Council are still awaiting a start date for the new Zebra crossing in Branton and will update us all as soon as they have news. I hope everyone enjoys the fun and excitement of this festive month but please, if you can, spare a thought for our elderly neighbours who may not have visitors this Christmas.

The deadline for the January issue will be Monday 12th December. The Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in December.

Merry Christmas Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 01302 534256 / 07795 387937 email: michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk

Community News Our very own Bake off Contender Meet Jamie Wimble, he's 10 and attends Auckley School. Jamie applied for the Junior Bake Off in May and was successful in gaining a telephone interview and was invited to a baking audition in which he had to take a savoury and sweet bake for sampling and sit for an interview in front of the camera. Jamie learned he was on television in July but had to keep it secret from everyone! He was filmed in the bake off tent in the summer and loved every minute of it. Jamie has put a lot of hard work into creating his showstopper recipes. He earned the nick name ’Calamity James’ on set after a funny moment with his mixer, he switched it on whilst looking at it!! The quarter finals heat was aired on Tuesday 15th November, on CBBC. Unfortunately, Jamie didn't make it to the quarter finals but it was very close! Jamie has loved cookery and baking from an early age, he will carry on baking for his family, friends and teachers and now has his sights set on the adult bake off. Well done Jamie and good luck with your next baking challenge.

Community News Spooktacular fun… On Sunday 30th October, Kilham Hall Management Committee hosted their annual Pumpkin Party for the local children and I’m pleased to say we had a full house and some pretty ghoulish outfits. As you can see, lots of fun was had by all with dancing, games, face painting, hot dogs, cakes, party bags and prizes! To the right, we have the winners of the pumpkin competition in age category, I’m sure you will agree they all did a fine job. A really big thank you to lots of local Mums and Dads who helped out on the day and to everyone who came along for the party. Till next year...

Luke Wins Gold! Congratulations to Luke Ashby, 9 years old, who has just returned a World Champion after competing for four days, representing Team ICO England at the Unified World Kickboxing Championships in Tuscany, Italy. After training hard all year travelling down to Birmingham at least twice a week he was rightly pleased with his performance and said "I was really proud to represent England at such a big event and to win the Gold but I really need to thank my parents and coach Jason Charlesworth for all the hard work they put into me’. If you would like to sponsor Luke in his pursuit for gold, please contact Jason Ashby lukekickboxerashby@yahoo.com

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Christmas Carol Singing

DECEMBER 2016

This event will take place in the car park of the Eagle and Child public house at 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday, 13 December 2016, with the Armthorpe Elmfield Band accompanying the singing. A warm welcome is extended to everyone.

Dog Fouling Enforcement

The majority of dog owners are responsible individuals who make sure they pick up after their pets and use the bins provided. However, in recent times the football pitch at Riverside Park has been badly fouled by dogs, which is very unpleasant for anyone using this facility. Members of Doncaster Council's Enforcement Team are now patrolling the whole of the Riverside Park on a regular basis, and any offenders will be prosecuted.

Broadband Performance

Council understands there is a roll-out plan for fibre-optic broadband to be introduced to Auckley in 2017 which will greatly improve performance. However, a resident of the new housing estate off Hurst Lane has been informed that because his development did not exist in 2014, it will not be covered by the proposed broadband roll-out. We would like to hear if anyone else is experiencing problems, or you can contact the following email address: hello@superfastsyorkshire.co.uk

General Practitioner Surgeries

In view of the large number of properties currently being built in the Parish, it would be useful to know whether anyone is experiencing difficulties registering with a local doctor in the area. Please contact the Clerk or any Parish Councillor. Clerk: Mrs. Marjorie Caygill Tel: 01302 770922 Email: marj.caygill@doncaster.co.uk MEMBERS OF AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL WOULD LIKE TO WISH EVERYONE A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Branton St Wilfrid’s School News Year 1 launched in to their new topic ‘Splendid Skies’ by going for a sensory walk in the woods. Year 1 were very good at using their senses to find and discuss the signs of Autumn. We even used some of the items we found to make our own woodland creature. Back at school we worked together to create our own 3D sky inside to classroom. We look forward to learning all about the seasons and different weather types as we become sky experts.

Class R trip to Sundown Adventure land We went on a coach. When we got there, we went to Storybook Village. We could go into the Three Little Pigs house, Hansel and Gretel’s cottage and the Jack and the Beanstalk cottage. We had a Robin Hood ride on a carriage, which was fun! All of us sat in the Three Bears’ chairs and mixed the porridge. The grown-ups said we were very well behaved and they were very proud of us. By Poppy-Rae and Pippa on behalf of Class R

In Year 4 we are studying the topic ‘Burps, bottoms and bile’. As part of our engage event we recreated the digestive system using household items. We had a great time learning about what our digestive system is and how it works; this resulted in us making poo. Here are the end results!

On Friday 11th November, the children in Year 6 confidently led a beautiful remembrance service to the whole school. They thoughtfully discussed the meaning of poppies and why we wear them today, sang two moving songs, recited the poem, Flanders Fields and read a prayer. They were all incredibly precise with their presentation skills and engaged every child to appreciate the importance of this significant time. Leading up to the remembrance service, the children created some stunning art work using charcoal and oil pastels to highlight the prominence of the poppy. Year 2 took part in a ‘Big, messy afternoon’ to launch their new ‘Muck, Mess and Mixtures’ topic. The children had a fantastic afternoon where they got to take part in lots of fun but very messy activities. They were able to paint with their hands and feet, put their hands into and feel gloop, create bubble paintings and have a play in a mud kitchen. It was a great afternoon and the children loved experiencing the exciting new mixtures!

Last week, Class 3 had a visit from “Meet A Creature”. It was an exciting start to their “Predator” topic. They met and had the chance to hold, touch or observe lots of creatures including snakes, lizards, rats, geckos, a tortoise and a tarantula. Class 3 had to think about if the animal was a predator or prey, what it ate, how it was suited to its habitat, whether or not it had a skeleton and how it moved. It was a great event to launch our topic. Class 5 have just had their engage event. As you can see, two pupils were chosen to get dressed up as Tudors while they learnt about Tudor clothes. Did you know the Tudors used to wee on wool to clean it?! They also learnt about how herbs were used for medicines, handled Tudor objects, wrote Tudor style and did some blackwork.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncater starting at 10 am. David Templeman was the speaker on Monday 7 November. David is an Elizabethan historian who specialises in subjects in which Sheffield and South Yorkshire are to the forefront. On this occasion his subject was “Sheffield in Tudor and Stuart Times”. After sketching in the history of Sheffield in the thirteenth century, when the small village of Sheffield which was situated at the confluence of the rivers Don and Sheaf acquired its Market Charter, David moved on to the times in question. Sheffield was built on a hillside, the better off living near the top. Those unfortunate to live at the bottom suffered occasional flooding bot from the rivers, and the torrent of water which was allowed out of the water storage area at the top of the village three or four times a year to scour the streets and flush rubbish away. Also at the time there were the beginnings of the metal industries, Sheffield’s cutlery already famous. There were also a comparatively large number of Smiths working a variety of metals. This talk was comprehensively illustrated, adding to the enjoyment of a well researched subject. The meetings of Danum Pobus Club in December will be on Monday 5th when Malcolm Walpole will give an audio visual presentation, “The Voyage up the Mekong”, and on the 19th when members will be enjoying the Club’s Christmas Lunch.

This cute boy is Jools, a four year old Jack Russell Terrier. Jools is great with peoplevery friendly, but a bit shy at first. He is very well-behaved and loves to play ball! He is not good with other dogs or cats, so would need to be the only pet in a home with older children. Jools is neutered and fully vaccinated. If you are interested in meeting this smashing boy, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705.
