Welcome

To the December issue of

The Branton & Auckley Arrow

Help out our local businesses and think of them when purchasing gifts this Christmas. With the lock down restrictions making trading virtually impossible for our small local businesses, please do all you can as I know many already do, to support them through this difficult time. Many have adapted their business the best they can to provide takeout services, delivery services and come up with gorgeous Christmas gift ideas and hampers. Almost all offer gift vouchers which can be used in 2021. Whether it’s beauty treatments, hair appointments, food hampers, gift vouchers for meals etc, there is so much we can do this Christmas to give these businesses a hand. As we await news of what restrictions we face over the festive period, I hope you are all able to see and spend time with those you love. The deadline for the January issue is Wednesday 9th December. The January issue will be distributed between Christmas & New year’s eve.

Merry Christmas everybody x

Community News CYRIL THE SQUIRREL AND FRIENDS

Charity no. 1175388

Santa’s Sleigh

Following a knee Operation, 86-year-old Adrian Slack of Branton, Doncaster was admitted to Hazel ward at Tickhill Hospital for respite care. During his stay he decided to write a short story and was helped by Sharon Evans of Hazel ward, due to Adrian being visually impaired. Each morning a daily instalment was read out to the Patients Activities Group. Adrian remained anonymous as the author until the story was complete. The patients were keen to hear what the main character Cyril the Squirrel was doing each day. Hazel ward has a resident squirrel who lives in the ward garden and the patients like to spot him climbing the walls and trees while they are having their breakfast. The squirrel became the inspiration for Adrian to write the story and Adrian has decided to donate proceeds from the sale of his book to support Hazel ward and its staff. For further information please contact John

Kirk on 01302 539762 for copies of the book or email brantonman@gmail.com

Spread a bit of joy this Christmas I heard of this fabulous idea to bring Magic to our Children, memories for our elderly and togetherness for our lonely citizens in our Parishes. So in great Community Spirit let's do this! On Christmas Eve at 6pm could everyone come outside and ring a bell for 2 mins to spread Christmas spirit and to help Santa fly that sleigh. With the added option of set Carols to sing after! After a tough year it would be an amazing memory for the kids and communities. End 2020 with a bit of Magic, hope and

togetherness!

Many thanks, Diane Wraight

Community News Auckley Show 200 plus club update.

S.O.S. Support Our Show We are continuing with our monthly draw, a way in which everyone has an opportunity to support the show. The current situation restricts the way in which we can call and collect payments that are due for renewal. The last couple of months we have been sending our supporters a letter with suggestions on how best to renew. We thank you for your continued support. Any new members can apply on line through our website. www.auckley.show.co.uk or give me a call to arrange 01302 770818. Having a Winter clearout before putting up the Christmas Decorations? No problem! Household Waste Recycling Centres across Doncaster remain OPEN throughout National Restrictions. To keep yourself and workers safe be sure to remember hands, face, space and ensure you follow social distancing. At this time of year, sites are very busy so please follow traffic restrictions and be sure to separate and bag up waste before you arrive. For more information on your local HWRC and what waste is currently being accepted you can visit our website: www.doncaster.gov.uk/ services/bins-recyclingwaste/household-wasterecycling-centres”

We are keeping our discounted price at £10 for twelve months with a chance of winning £100 each month. It's really sad news we had to cancel 2020. However, plans are well underway for next year which will be Saturday 21st August 2021. With your support we’ll make it the best ever annual community event. Winner of the November draw number 16 Carolyn Hanson wins £100. Please note you don’t have to live in Auckley to help support our show.

The committee would like to wish everyone all the very best for Christmas and have a happy new year.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL DECEMBER NEWSLETTER Annual Christmas Carol Singing Event Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 restrictions, it will not be possible to hold the usual carol singing event in December at the Eagle and Child car park. Council wishes to thank Jason Fletcher for his hospitality over a number of years in welcoming singers and members of the band to celebrate the festive season with the singing of carols, and hopes it will be possible for the singing to be resumed in 2021. Parish Council Meetings Virtual Parish Council meetings were held in July, August, October and November 2020, in order to reduce the risk of the coronavirus infection, and it may be some time before normal face to face meetings are held once more. Members of the public are welcome to join a virtual meeting either by telephone or with their computer. Details are included on the agendas which are posted several days before the meeting in the window of the Chinese Takeaway at Ellers Lane, and on noticeboards in the grounds of the Auckley School and the Hayfield Lane Primary School. Parking on the Highway Many minor roads in Auckley are narrow in width, and cars parked on the road can obstruct emergency services from reaching a dwelling where urgent medical treatment is required or a fire has occurred. In recent weeks the drivers of both an ambulance and a dustbin lorry were unable to access Dart Grove because of parked vehicles, and similar incidences have in the past occurred on Spey Drive. It would therefore be greatly appreciated if residents could, whenever possible, park their vehicles off road on their drives to make sure there is easy access for the emergency services.

The Parish Council would like to wish everyone a

Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Cantley with Branton Parish Council DECEMBER 2020 - LATEST NEWS Annual Christmas Carol Singing Event Regrettably due to the current pandemic it will not be possible to hold the event this year. It is very much hoped that this popular activity will be resumed in December 2021. Parish Council Meeting Arrangements Whilst it was possible to hold parish council meetings in Kilham Hall in September and October 2020 in view of the increasing cases of Covid 19 in the Doncaster area all meetings will revert to virtual meetings until such time as it is deemed appropriate to resume in person meetings. Christmas Lighting Displays As in previous years arrangements have been made for festive lighting to be displayed on the Christmas tree on the corner of Glen Road and Doncaster Road. . Provision of a Wreath and Donation to the Royal British Legion A poppy wreath has again been purchased by the parish council for the local school use and a donation made to the Royal British Legion to mark Remembrance Day. Keeping Branton Tidy – Next Litter Pick Again due to the escalation in coronavirus cases the litter pick planned for November 2020 was postponed and it is hoped to resume early in 2021. Provision of New Picnic Benches Arrangements are being made to replace the wooden picnic tables with new benches in the near future.

The parish council would like to wish everyone a healthy, peaceful and enjoyable Christmas and hope that the New Year will bring a return to a more normal life for all to enjoy.

Offer ends Friday 9th December 2020

As we all move into Autumn, the beautiful colours of the fallen leaves made for the perfect playground before we broke up for our two week half term. The uncharacteristically dry, warm weather meant the children could make the most of our large open spaces by diving and hiding, as well as using the foliage as the perfect resource for some inspiring artwork by our Reception class. We may not have been able to celebrate Halloween in our usual Misson way but that did not stop the children dressing up in their favourite scary outfits and utilising our outdoor area, seeing as this is the safest place for our children to be, in the fresh air. Our key stage 2 children made wands from fallen branches and cast spells on each other, bringing our first half term to a spooky close. We must also mention our amazing PTA who kindly made a special Halloween goodie bag for every child to take home. Our creative teachers and our supportive parents are just one reason why these inspirational children of Misson Primary School continue to successfully spread their wings.

Still here in lockdown Lockdown is devastating for everyone, including the local RSPCA Animal Centre, but caring for animals cannot stop. Despite losing 95% of income in the first lockdown, the team still has animals of all shapes and sizes to look after. One such case is Tommy rescued in a terrible state by RSPCA Inspectors. It was Before unclear what effect severe malnourishment would have on his body but he is making a steady recovery so far. Despite suffering cruelty, Tommy is a happy little soul who loves a fuss, cuddle and his extra feeds. The fact that he has learnt to trust humans again so soon after his rescue is nothing short of a miracle. The team are working hard through lockdown to rehabilitate this little lad so he will be able to find his forever home and be able to live the life he deserves. Tommy is just one example; there are so many other animals that need your help. If able to, please help Doncaster, Rotherham and District RSPCA by donating to their emergency appeal. The team relies more than ever on kind donations from the community and support from local businesses. A £5 donation is the equivalent of feeding a dog for three days, while a £25 donation will provide vital veterinary medicines and healthcare. You can donate via paypal, the website or Facebook page. You can also donate £5 by texting RSPCADRB to 70085.

After

As always, thank you for your continued support and we wish all our local community the best of health and urge you to take care of yourselves.

Independent Walk Routes around Doncaster DONCASTER RAMBLERS A local walk from Thorpe in Balne Please take care when walking and follow the Countryside Code, and continue to follow tier three rules plus according to government guidance you may continue to walk outdoors for exercise with the people you live with, your support bubble, or one person from another household. Doncaster Rambler volunteers pride themselves in surveying over 290 footpaths in the DMBC region, and their maintenance teams, with the help of council staff, help repair stiles gates and footbridges throughout the region. Sadly this year much of this work has been neglected, and in particular overgrown vegetation makes some paths difficult to navigate. Never-the-less with some steely grit a passage can be achieved. So it is with today’s five and ½ mile circular around the agricultural landscape north of Thorpe in Balne. The walk follows field edges, and sometimes across them, along hedgerows and through farmyards. Beware of dogs that bark Head west through the village on what is the Pennine Trail and where the road bends left continue straight down narrow passage to exit left and across across fields for 580m. Turn left then after 150m right to cross fields passing as you go under overhead cables and make your way towards level crossing. Cross with care. Continue in the same direction for 740m ignoring two paths to the left. The path widens becoming Blacker Green Lane, and eventually a road. Where it bends left continue ahead on a wide green but overgrown path, Shirley Lane, as it runs parallel with the railway eventually reaching some woods and a swing gate. Pass through and make a slight right to follow a wide track towards Rushy Moor House passing an abandoned vehicle on route. Take care as your zigzag through the farm yard following the waymarkers, taking care to stay right of the hedge (it is tempting to walk on the left) Continue on the field edge for 350m until you reach a t junction. You turn right and are now on Long Bank, on which you stay for 1300m until you see the church Spire on Haywood Lane. After 340m you reach the level crossing (cross with care) and another 340m brings you to the entrance of Wrancarr House Farm. Make your way down curiously passing within inches of the farm house door, and the boisterous Rottweiler! Continue with nerves in tact to a stile and t junction, where you turn left and follow the path right.

BBC Countryfile Ramble in aid of Children in Need Doncaster Ramblers have supported this worthy cause in the past, so we thought we’d continue the tradition in 2020, but because of Covid-19 we were forced to make this a solo ramble. So with the sun in my back, I set off on what turned out to be an eight mile hike taking in Austerfield’s gravel pits, Bawtry’s Kings Wood, Misson’s solar energy farm, and Newington’s Idle Washlands. On route passers by were handed leaflets encouraging donations to Children in Need. For further information and how to donate please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/peter-rowsell2

At this point the path crossed a ditch where the footbridge has been removed, climb down and up with care. Bravery prevails and continuing on firmer footing to reach a concealed waymarker on right after 500m. Pass through hedge and turn left to continue along Highfield lane for 320m. Take care not to miss footpath on right (just before road bends) and follow this for 760m when you emerge onto Thorpe Lane where you turn right to make your way back to the start, and a hearty congratulations for making it.
