Welcome to the February issue of Branton & AuckleyArrow We can just about see that flicker of light at the end of the tunnel. It is still a flicker, but it is there and we are making progress. Doncaster hope to have vaccinated all 4 top priority groups by mid February, this will be a fantastic achievement and something to feel proud of. At the time of going to print, our rates were also continuing to fall which is really good news. A restriction free life still seems like some time away but we know the end is in sight. Thank you to all of our front line key workers from the NHS and police to teaching staff and shopworkers. I would also like to thank all of our delivery staff for their efforts each month to make sure the Arrow is delivered to everyone on time. The deadline for the March issue is Wednesday 17th February. The March issue will be distributed the last weekend in February.

Community News Branton had a special visitor the Saturday before Christmas! With only 5 days till Christmas, Eve, Santa Claus managed to fit in a flying visit to our village much to the delight of the local children. The visit was organised by the wonderful Gary and Trish Lee. Santa made sure everyone knew he was here with his bell ringing helpers, After 2 hours of visiting the children in the village, Mr & Mrs Claus cheered us all before making a dash back to the North Pole. From the village of Branton, Thank you very much.
FAKE CORONAVIRUS VACCINE MESSAGES Notts Neighbourhood Alert has had reports that a fake NHS text message is circulating, telling people that they are eligible to apply for the COVID-19 vaccine. When you click on the link, you are taken to a convincing but fake NHS website that asks for personal details, including bank account information. Treat these messages with caution! The best way to find information is from the Government website, GOV.UK, and to visit that website via a trusted source (such as through Google or Bing) and do not click on links in unsolicited texts or e-mails. There have also been reports of criminals making telephone calls and asking for payment over the phone before you can attend your vaccine appointment. The vaccine is free. If you receive a call, please hang up immediately. These scams appear very convincing and we all make mistakes. If you think you have been a victim of fraud:
let your bank know immediately contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service for free on 0808 2787955 for further scams advice.
If you are receiving unwanted phone calls, let your service provider know. You may wish to consider a landline phone with inbuilt call-blocking functions. These are available via some supermarkets and online stores.

at Kilham Park, Branton
This is still in the early planning stages but they would like, with the support of Branton St Wilfrid’s school, for all children who have painted stones over this period starting back in March, to either drop their stones off at school (contact the school office for details) or leave them in a container that will be provided in January within the garden of Kilham Hall next to the salt container. The parish council would like to form a permanent snake with the stones in one of the external walls of the extension to the hall. They will do their very best to use everyone's creations if this plan can go ahead and would love your support and ideas. If anyone has any questions, please contact Julia Staniforth cwbpc@outlook.com

Community News Would you like to help clean up your village? The local Litter Picks have been unable to go ahead due to the current lockdown and restrictions. Hopefully, such group activities will be able to resume soon. However, in the meantime, if you and your household would like to do some covid friendly exercise, I have equipment you can borrow so you can do your own bit of litter picking. It is surprisingly enjoyable and the results are for the benefit of us all. If this is something you would like to do please email michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk for more details on how to collect your litter pick and bags. It is important to note that Covid restrictions apply and Cantley with Branton Parish Council are not responsible for your group or activity.
PLEASE PICK UP YOUR DOG’S MESS It is never pleasant to come across dog mess on our foot paths and in parks. Please remember to take poo bags with you when you walk your dog. There are litter bins provided throughout all the villages where dog mess can be disposed of. At a time when walking is one of the few things we have to look forward to, please help to make it a nicer, safer experience for all and think about young children and the elderly in particular. Thank you
Auckley Show 200 plus club update. S.O.S. Support Our Show We are continuing with our monthly draw, a way in which everyone has an opportunity to support the show. The current situation restricts the way in which we can call and collect payments that are due for renewal. The last couple of months we have been sending our supporters a letter with suggestions on how best to renew. We thank you for your continued support. Any new members can apply on line through our website. www.auckley.show.co.uk or give me a call to arrange 01302 770818. We are keeping our discounted price at £10 for twelve months with a chance of winning £100 each month. It's really sad news we had to cancel 2020. However, plans are well underway for next year which will be Saturday 21st August 2021. With your support we’ll make it the best ever annual community event. Winner of the January 2021 draw number 419 Mark Kisby wins £100. Please note you don’t have to live in Auckley to help support our show. Regards, Neil Woodward, Chairman, Auckley Show

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL FEBRUARY 2021 NEWSLETTER Parish Precept The Parish Precept is the money collected by DMBC on behalf of the Council and used for the benefit of Auckley residents. The Precept for the 2021/2022 financial year has not been increased and remains at £40,000.
Coronavirus Vaccination The vaccination programme is now underway and injections are currently being administered at several locations in the Doncaster area. Patients will be contacted by their local G. P. Surgery, when they are due to be vaccinated, and given a date, time and venue.
Highway Cameras The Parish Council is investigating the possibility of providing safety cameras at certain locations on the highway to hopefully play a part in reducing crime.
New Signalled Crossing at the Main Street/Hurst Lane Junction Thankfully the main road works at the junction have now been completed, and new lights are in situ. However, the lights are still waiting to be connected, and therefore temporary lights are being used.
New Equipment Planned for Riverside Park Council plans to install two picnic tables/benches at Riverside Park in the children’s play area. In addition, a defibrillator will be attached to the outer wall of the sports pavilion facing the car park for easy access.

2020 was certainly a year we will all remember, whether that was for good or bad reasons… everyone has their own stories to tell. Since the New Year our Reception students have been looking forward to the future, learning how to have a fresh outlook on the world. We have been capturing their dreams and wishes, whether this was in school or at home, while keeping safe with their families. By using the new, amazing hand-writing skills our youngest children are beginning to master, we have been able to produce and display a number of calendars filled with inspirational thoughts, lifting all our spirits at such a strange time. These are just a few to make you all smile. ‘’I wish I could see my friends’’ Sophia aged 4 ‘’Learn to read’’ Harry aged 5 ‘’I wish for a dog’’ Violet aged 5 ‘’I wish Coronavirus was over so I can go back to school’’ Jase aged 5

Census 2021 will provide a snapshot of modern society Households across Doncaster will soon be asked to take part in Census 2021. The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941. It will be the first run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones or tablets. “A successful census will ensure everyone from local government to charities can put services and funding in the places where they are most needed,” Iain Bell, deputy national statistician at the Office for National Statistics, said. “This could mean things like doctors’ surgeries, schools and new transport routes. That’s why it is so important everyone takes part and we have made it easier for people to do so online on any device, with help and paper questionnaires for those that need them.”
24
Census day will be on March 21, but households across the country will receive letters with online codes allowing them to take part from early March. The census will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity. Results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations. For more information, visit census.gov.uk. Or contact Laurence.green11@field.census.gov.uk Mobile Number: 07452 940363

DONCASTER RAMBLERS Independent Walk Routes around Doncaster Please take care when walking and follow the Countryside Code. Follow government guidelines, walk alone or with one member of your household. Obey social distancing rules and give way to other walkers. Only walk locally.
Dunsville Circular (Alternative Route) We’ve done this walk a couple of times already, but you can never repeat a good ramble too often. Anyway, this time I’ve added a minor detour. BBC Channel 4 have broadcast a series of Yorkshire Winter Walk, you may have seen them? We don’t have the same grandiose scenery to offer, but what we do have is the exhilaration of being on the move under your own steam. Begin at the car park by Quarry Park on the A18 (High Street) adjacent to Londis Walk north into the park, crossing St George’s Avenue, then after 110m turn left and then right onto St Mary’s Road which leads onto a wide open bridleway. Follow this for 350m where at a telegraph pole and wastebin turn right. Continue in this direction for just over a mile, passing Broadway, and Harpendon Drive on route. On reaching Doncaster Road A18 turn left and follow it right then left until reaching Carr Side Lane by Manor Timber and turn sharp right. Stay on this metalised road for about one mile, heading south towards the M18 then ascending steps on the left, to reach Mosscroft Lane. Turn right and after 140m turn left into Sheep Cote Lane at Carr Side Park Industrial Estate. Pass through the estate following road right then left after ¼ mile then shortly right onto Rake Bridge Bank. Follow this for ¾ mile turning right at a finger post. Continue along this narrow path for just under a mile to reach the A18 High Street. Turn right to return to the start taking care when crossing the road. This walk is 5 ½ miles covering a variety of areas including urban, industrial and rural. Courtesy of Doncaster Ramblers
P.O.I Hatfield Hatfield (also called Heathfield historically) near Doncaster is an ancient settlement and a Palace of the Northumbrian Kingdom called Meicen (may also be referred to as Meigen). On 12 October 633 AD, King Edwin was killed in Battle of Hatfield Chase by Penda, King of Mercia. Penda was assisted in the battle by the Welsh under the leadership of Cadwallon ap Cadfan, Welsh (British) King of Gwynedd. Osric, a possible successor to Edwin, was also killed in the battle. Edwin's son Edfrith also surrendered to Penda. It is thought that this battle gave rise to the name of Slay Pit Lane in Hatfield where it is rumoured that the battle took place and the bodies of soldiers lay close by.
