Welcome to the February issue of the Branton & Auckley Arrow. I have to say, I’m pleased January is now behind us! I hope you managed to avoid the dreaded cold bug. It was nice to experience our first real frost of the winter, lets hope it has sent the bugs running! If, like me, you have lost your keep fit mojo, you may need a helping hand. Carol Kay Fulton is a local Personal Trainer and may be able to help you find it. Her details are in this month’s issue. Spring still feels like a long way off, however, we have a few things to look forward to with Valentine’s Day and St Patrick’s Day coming up soon. The school half term was very short, so, if you have children, we also have a week break to look forward to in early February. We have some ideas this month to fill your days over half term as well as Special Valentine’s Day menus at our local pubs. Whatever you choose to do in February, I hope you have fun! The deadline for the March issue is Wednesday 17th February. The March Arrow will be delivered the last weekend in February.
Best Wishes

Cantley with Branton Parish Council Annual Carol Singing.
Kilham Hall News Belated best wishes for 2016 from Kilham Hall committee and we hope that you had a good Christmas. Tuesday Coffee Club had two very enjoyable and festive meetings in December, the first on December 8th when Reg Littlewood played carols for us and the second on the 15th when we had our annual pie and peas lunch and were entertained by local duo Change for Two Tenors. Many thanks to Reg who is a Coffee Club regular and often accompanies us on the Hall organ at our many events. Thanks also to Change for Two Tenors whom we hope to invite back next Christmas. The adjoining photos are from our lunch on December 15th. Kilham Hall is now back in full swing and we hope that 2016 will once again prove a successful year for the Hall and the activities on offer. Best wishes, The Committee đ&#x;˜€

Branton St Wilfrids School joined up with the local community at Kilham Hall on Wednesday 16th December to celebrate Christmas with some good old fashioned carol singing. Jubilate entertained everyone with their beautiful singing, the raffle raised nearly £150 for the Harry Mathews Bowel Transplant Fund, Jubilate’s chosen charity. Kilham Hall Management committee served refreshments to everyone and Father Christmas arrived towards the end to hand out sweets to all the children. Special thank you to all the ladies from Kilham Hall Management committee for their help on the evening, to Reg for playing the organ, Mr & Mrs Dilks and the Jubilate support team, Deputy Head Mrs McCormack, Head Teacher Mrs Rushby and her Husband and Father Andrew from St Wilfrids Church for their support on the evening.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER
FEBRUARY/MARCH 2016 Parish Precept The Parish Precept is the amount that we ask Doncaster Council to collect on our behalf. Apart from football fees this is our only source of income, and all monies are spent on matters supporting the residents of Auckley Parish. Last year the precept was ÂŁ31,868. To allow for inflation the precept has been increased to ÂŁ32,495 for the 2016/2017 financial year.
Christmas Carol Singing The annual carol singing event was held on Tuesday,15th December outside the Eagle and Child public house. The Armthorpe Elmfield Band accompanied the singing, and the event was well-attended. Council wishes to thank Jason from the Eagle and Child for kindly installing a gazebo in order to keep everyone warm and dry, and serving delicious hot soup.
Proposed Reduction of Speed Limit at Hurst Lane Members of the Parish Council have campaigned over many years, in the interests of children's safety, for the speed limit on Hurst Lane outside The Hayfield School to be reduced from the existing 40mph to 30 mph. A proposal to reduce the limit has now gone out to consultation, and hopefully will be implemented later this year.
Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS) The FARRRS Road project when completed will link Doncaster Airport with the M18, thus providing easier access for anyone visiting the Airport, and reduce traffic movements on local roads. Phase one of the scheme from the M18 to Rossington Bridge will open in early 2016, and a planning application is currently being prepared for Phase two which will extend the road from Rossington Bridge to the existing Airport link road. Council supports the project, but has expressed some reservations relating to drainage issues.
Dog Fouling The fouling of pavements and recreation areas continues to be a problem, due to a minority of dog owners who do not clean up after their pets when they are in a public place. Several dog waste bins are provided in the Parish, and a new dual bin (for litter and dog waste) has now been installed at Bell Butts Lane near Public Footpath No. 1, and a second one on the Spey Drive play area.

Join the First World War Time Team and change your life
Doncaster 1914-18 needs YOU!
First World War experts in Doncaster are inviting local people to make a New Year’s resolution to volunteer their time in a history-focused community project – with a promise that it could change their lives! Doncaster 1914-18 is a four-year First World War centenary project, funded by a grant of £926,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), aiming to build a picture of Doncaster’s First World War history and legacy. The Doncaster’s 1914-18 project team need local people to help uncover a 100 year-old heritage at risk of being lost forever. By getting involved, volunteers will not only be transforming the public’s understanding of the past - revealing the lives of thousands of Doncaster’s men, women and children during the First World War – but may also be able to transform their own futures. “Volunteering is a New Year’s resolution that truly makes a difference in the community, and it’s so rewarding. Rather than giving something up, you can give your time to help out, so it’s a resolution you’ll actually keep,” says Vicky Siviter from the Doncaster 1914-18 project.

“Our volunteers are inspired to join the team for a variety of reasons - perhaps looking for a stepping stone into a new career, wanting to learn something new, or getting hands-on with history, and making new friends. Whatever their motivation, they’ve made a huge contribution to Doncaster’s history, but have also made a difference in their lives.” Rebecca Payne, who has been volunteering with the project since July 2015, explains: “I would love to work in this field eventually, and volunteering is the best way to build this kind of work experience. Being able to get involved in history in this way is really exciting. It’s absolutely fascinating to uncover the real life stories of local individuals who served in the war, and an honour to be able to handle objects that touched their lives – including their medals.” Rebecca was part of a group of volunteers who worked with Doncaster Museum’s Conservator to gain new skills in conservation, and prepare medals for a new First World War display, now open in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Museum in Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery. Jean Walker adds: “I could use a computer to check my emails but wanted to improve my digital skills. After just a few months, I’ve become quite an expert at online research and scanning, and it’s given me such confidence. I volunteer once a week and have made some good friends through the project.” Wyn Bulmer, a volunteer from Doncaster Local Studies Library, showed what volunteers can achieve after spending years indexing the names of 14,000 Doncaster soldiers from Doncaster’s wartime newspapers. The result of her hard work is now available to all local people for their own family research, via the names index on the Doncaster 1914-18 website. Volunteers are needed to help with a range of different activities, including:
Join the Great War on Tour – a fun and interactive travelling roadshow that includes costumes, crafts and handling of First World War objects, bringing their stories to life. Help to deliver education programmes, bringing wartime Doncaster alive for schoolchildren and adults alike. Get involved with researching First World War objects and stories to be used in exhibitions across the borough Scan and photograph objects, letters, photographs and postcards to be added to the new digital archive on the project website “You don’t need any experience or qualifications: we’re simply looking for people with a keen interest in history,” adds Vicky. “The opportunities are flexible so you can choose a role that interests you and builds new skills. You can volunteer as much or as little time as you like – anything from a couple of hours to multiple days each week.” HIGH CLASS DECORATORS

Cupid To me February is known for cold, damp weather. For card shops, florists and Thornton’s it’s known for Valentine’s Day. So, by the time you read this there’ll be all things red, pink, heart shaped and fluffy in the shops, and the price of flowers will have gone up! I read the other day that children often have unique insights into what they see as love. What do people do on a date? Lynnette (age 8): “Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough.” Martin (age 10) sees the bottom line: “On the first date, they just tell each other lies, and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date.” When is it OK to kiss someone? Hannah (7): “When they’re rich!” Kyle (7): “The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn’t want to mess with that.” Oscar(8): “The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them….It’s the right thing to do.” How does one decide whom to marry? Allan (10): “You’ve got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the nachos and dips coming.” Allan may find it prudent to slightly revise that theory in a few years. It’s been suggested there there are three kinds of love that can inform children (and adults’) attitudes: 1. Love if. 2. Love because of. 3. Love full stop. Love if and because of are based on personality or performance: “I love you if you go out with me, if you have a good sense of humour, if you… and I love you because you’re attractive, intelligent or athletic.…”
Parish Church Service Times The pattern for worship at both churches is varied, ranging from traditional to contemporary. Our monthly pattern of worship is outlined below.
1st Sunday
9.15am: Finningley - Family Communion. 11.15am: Finningley - Baptisms by arrangement 11.00am: Auckley - All Age Communion
2nd Sunday
8.00am: Finningley - Traditional Holy Communion 9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club 11.00am: Auckley - Family Communion with Sunday Club
3rd Sunday 9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club 11.00am: Auckley - Family Communion with Sunday Club 4th Sunday
9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club 11.00am: Auckley - Family Communion with Sunday Club Noon: Auckley - Baptisms by arrangement
5th Sunday
9.15am: Finningley - Either a Celtic or African style Holy Communion But the best kind of love says, “I love you full stop: even 11.00am: Auckley - Holy Communion (BCP)
with your weaknesses, even if you change, even if someone better looking comes along. Even if you have zoobreath in the morning. I want to give myself to you.”
This is nothing new. In the Bible Paul described this unconditional love: “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. …Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Love will last forever….” 1 Corinthians 13 How can a stranger tell if two people are married? Dennis (8): By “whether they seem to be shouting at the same kids!” Revd. Neil Redeyoff St Saviour's, Auckley & St Oswald's & Holy Trinity, Finningley
