Editor’s Letter …

Well what a December! As I write this, we are not quite half way through the month and so much has happened!

We have experienced one of the worst storms in years and our local secondary school paid the price heavily. Most of the children, who have in effect, broken up for Christmas 2 weeks early think all their Christmases have come at once! That is till parents discovered the VLE site ;) On a serious note, the relief from parents was overwhelming as the news and photographs were circulated, the reality of what could have been hit home and I thank God for looking after everyone that day. Auckley Market was again a great success, buzzing with Christmas Shoppers and Kilham Hall in Branton had its roof raised, not by the storms, but by the beautiful carol singing from St Wilfrid’s Jubilate group. The FAB musical production at St Oswald's church in Finningley turned out to be another treat for us all, well done to all the cast and supporters who helped to put together ‘Gold to Bethlehem’ we have some real local talent. The deadline for the February issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 15th January and The Arrow will be distributed from 24th January 2014!

Happy New Year Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 01302 534256 / 07795 387937 Email: michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk

News, News, News, News, News, News... Auckley Christmas Market Well what a day! The best Auckley Christmas Market by far with visitor numbers up to around 12,000! The day started off very well, dry and mild, so we were looking forward to the rest of the day. The volunteers started to erect the stalls, followed closely by RJ Electrical installing the lighting to each stall. Old and new traders started to arrive from 12.20pm onwards to set up their stalls. This year we had a marquee in the centre of the market which charities were able to use free of charge these included; Air Ambulance, Macmillan, Sue Ryder, Victoria Cross, Finningley C of E School. The Hayfield and Hill House schools were also encouraged to bring along their products or services. 'Young Enterprise' A fast paced business enterprise experience that sees students start a business selling products or services to people locally, it supports young people by building their confidence, skills, knowledge. There was entertainment in the marquee, bell ringers and The Hayfield School Band, which the visitors all enjoyed singing and tapping their feet to. The positive feedback we get year after year from regular traders is phenomenal, the reason they come back every year is down to the help and friendliness of volunteers as well as to meet other traders and of course, the visitors. New traders attending the event for the very first time were also impressed at the service they received, in fact one new trader has booked 4 stalls for next years event. Auckley Christmas Market would like to thank volunteers, traders, visitors, and everyone who has supported this event to make it as successful as it is. Special thanks to the local residents for their kindness and support, Auckley Parish Centre for lending us a table and a few chairs. Also Michelle at the Arrow for her continued support and coverage of the event. Hope everyone has a fabulous Christmas & Happy New Year Marilyn Cockett, Voluntary Project Manager Auckley Christmas Market

News, News, News, News, News, News... Hayfield Swing Brass Band Auckley Christmas Market

Wind Damage at Hayfield School The Hayfield School in Auckley hit the headlines on 5th December when they suffered serious wind damage to their school roof. The ferocious storm which shook the country, ripped the roof off part of the school building whilst pupils were in lessons, just after lunch. Thankfully, no one was injured and Hayfield school ensured the safety of all staff and students as they were evacuated from the premises. The School was closed to staff and students for 3 days then Years 11, 12 & 13 went back to school on Wednesday 11th December however the school remains closed for the remainder of the Autumn term to years 7, 8, 9 & 10. The school website has updates for parents and students and work has been uploaded to the VLE site. You will be glad to know the students spirits are high and the school band played wonderfully at the Auckley Christmas Market! www.hayfield-school.co.uk

The Flavour of Christmas St Oswald's Church organised a day of coffee, cake and mince pies for the local community in aid of raising funds for the Church restoration plans. They made a whopping ÂŁ691.90 after offering waiter service all day long! Well done to all the ladies and gents who took part in the day and for all the donations of cakes and mince pies received.

Kilham Hall Carol Singing On Wednesday 11th December the roof was raised by the beautiful voices of St Wilfrid’s Primary School Jubilate group. Cantley with Branton Parish Council invited the group along with other children from St Wilfrids Primary school to sing at our annual Carol singing event. Father Howard from St Wilfrid’s Church in Cantley was also invited and he said a few words to us all before the carols got underway. We had a special treat when Oliver and Morgan played their guitars to the first verse of Silent Night, followed by Jubilate singing a verse in German before we all joined in. There was a raffle and the Kilham Hall Management committee donated their takings for refreshments in aid of the Harry Mathews Bowel Transplant Trust, Jubilates chosen charity for the evening. We raised £124.00 in total. In addition, we had a visit from Father Christmas who delighted the children and made all that singing worth while! Thank you to Jubilate, Miss Brown, deputy head of St Wilfrids for leading events and the ladies from Kilham Hall Management Trust committee for looking after everyone.

News From Auckley School

Football Tournament This month Y5/6 took part in the local primary school football tournament at Hayfield School. The children were extremely excited and raring to go! After a gruelling two hours, Auckley came home victorious; winning three games and drawing in one Well done year 5 and 6! Shoe-box Appeal Our school council have been working towards helping less fortunate children by collecting shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. These aren’t just any ordinary shoe boxes! The shoe box appeal requests small gifts to be placed inside the boxes suitable for either a boy or a girl of various age ranges. Here at Auckley, we managed to collect a record breaking 33 boxes which are now on route to Belarus.

Branton St Wilfrid’s School News Year 5/6 at the Pyramid Schools’ Football Tournament November 2013 Branton took two teams to represent the school at the Pyramid Schools’ Football Tournament in November. It was a great atmosphere and the teams all played well in the November chill. Both Branton teams represented the school well and showed good sportsmanship. “Stripes” team were enthusiastic but were thwarted by some very good goalkeeping. “Red” team were undefeated throughout and came 2nd losing by 1 point to the tournament winners, Auckley School. Thanks to all the parents who helped with transport and supported the teams. Well played all!

Recycling Week

Monday 25th – Friday 29th November was Recycling Factory Week at Branton St Wilfrid’s! During Factory Week, we normally make things to sell at our Christmas Fair but this year was different because each class was given the challenge of making items out of recycled materials. Key Stage 2 started the week with a visit from the Eco Team at Doncaster Council, who came to show them the sorts of things it is possible to make from recycled materials, including bags, pencil pots, clocks and toys. Later in the week, the Eco Team came back to lead a session for Classes 3, 4 5 and 6 were they learnt all about recycling. Each class was visited by Bryony, an artist from The Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield, lead recycled art workshops. The children really enjoyed making sock puppets, wall hangings, bags and prints from recycled materials. Mrs Bailey also visited Classes R, 1 and 2 to help them make Christmas decorations from cards, cardboard and wrapping paper. Children also worked in their classes to make things to sell from materials that they had brought in from home. The children enjoyed taking part in their activities over the course of the week, and succeeded in producing some lovely art and craft work to sell at the Christmas Fair.

Christmas Fair Many thanks to parents and friends who supported our Christmas Fair this year. Our children made a super assortment of items that went on sale including Christmas decorations, cakes and biscuits, gift tags, sock puppets, and t-shirt bags. We took a total of £1245.64 for the School Fund to pay for curriculum enhancement activities.

Christmas Prayer Journey All our classes took part in the Christmas Prayer Journey led by Linda Gardner and Governors. They visited five stations to tell the Christmas Story and had opportunity to reflect on the meaning of Christmas. Many thanks to Linda who provided all the resources and to our Governors for volunteering their time as the occasion really set the scene for the rest of our Christmas activities.

FAB Parish

Revd Neil Redeyoff and Revd Louise Tinniswood

Revd Louise looking ‘sheepish’ in Gold to Bethlehem!

Looking Back Moving Forward At New Year one thing that seems to have become traditional on television are those news programmes looking back on the events of the year. The cynical part of me wants to make a comment here about it being a form of cheap television to fill the schedules but another part of me sees them as a good opportunity for us to look back on the past twelve months especially as we now live in a world where today’s news is tomorrow’s fish and chip wrapper. These programmes usually, like all news broadcasts, focus on the tragic incidents or political issues of the year. The phrase that ‘no news is good news’ should perhaps be rewritten to say ‘good news is no news’ as the bulletins throughout the year are full of the worst things about our world leaving anything good until the ‘and finally’ item. Until the first week in December, 2013 would probably have been remembered for many things. The devastation caused in the Philippines by Typhoon Haiyan. The Boston marathon bombing. The murder of Lee Rigby. The two-week shutdown of the federal government in the United States. The terrorist attack on the shopping centre in Nairobi. And finally, the birth of Prince George! I think however the event that 2013 will be most remembered for in the years to come will be the death of Nelson Mandela. I don’t think in my lifetime there has been anyone else who has had such an impact on the world. I grew up hearing about apartheid and the horrendous inequality suffered by the black majority population in South Africa. Whether you remember Nelson Mandela as a revolutionary, politician, president or philanthropist there is no denying the influence his life had on people and nations across the globe. Inequality exists all over the world. We live in a society that favours those who have the most money and sadly racism, sexism and ageism - along with many other forms of prejudice - stunt the progress many people can make through life. This is not what God wants for his world. In his letter to the Galatians Saint Paul wrote that ‘There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.’ Christians believe that when God looks at us he doesn’t see our colour, gender or our profession but sees us as one of his children who he loves without condition. For myself I pray that I can go into 2014 seeing others as God sees them. Happy New Year! Revd. Louise Tinniswood St Saviour’s, Auckley and St Oswald’s & Holy Trinity, Finningley
