Welcome to the January
Issue of the I hope your Christmas was filled with joy and laughter and your waist line has not suffered too much! This is the time we start to think about changing our habits, eating less or more healthily and keeping fit are normally high on most lists. This is understandable considering the constant stream of news informing us of all the latest reports about the importance of keeping fit. It can extend our life, it can improve our health, it can help fight off serious illness, it can reduce the cost to the NHS amongst many other things. On top of this, it makes us feel happier, more energised and can be very sociable depending on what you choose to do to keep fit. We have so many options, there really is no excuse. I choose to run, and when I recommend running to others, I hear ‘I can’t run, I have never been able to run, I couldn’t run for the bus’… and so on. This may well be the case, however, no one would expect you to go from nothing to doing a 10k run in a matter of weeks, it takes time for your body to adjust to running, but once you can run, you are free to run, no matter what your age or commitments, whenever you want, making it the most flexible and cheapest way to keep healthy and fit. My friend Kate Chorlton and my Mum, who is 65, (don’t tell her I told you this) can’t run and have never run. However, they are both joining Doncaster Athletics Club in January on a beginners course for non runners. It starts 27th January every Tuesday and Thursday evening 6pm till 7pm. I will let you know how they get on but I am one very proud daughter and friend!! The deadline for the February issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 14th January. The February Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in January.
Happy New Year

Polite Notice—Dog Fouling It has been noticed that dog fouling around our villages is at an all time high! The majority of dog owners clean up after their dogs, however, there are some owners who leave the litter on the street. Areas such as Hurst Lane outside of Hayfield school, Ravenswood Drive in Auckley, Doncaster Road and Valley Drive in Branton have seen an increase in this offence since the nights have drawn in. Can dog owners please take a torch to help them clean up after their dogs as the mess that is left behind is unsightly and a nuisance to all pedestrians young and old. Bagged litter should also be disposed of in a dog litter bin or take it home. Please help to keep our villages clean and dispose of your dog litter appropriately.
FINNINGLEY WI In December the committee entertained members with a unique WI panto, before we all retired to the Harvey Arms for a well deserved drink. Many thanks to Jayne, our script writer, for her original take on a traditional story!! We have an interesting programme planned for 2015 including various speakers, crafts, cookery and a treasure hunt. To find out more come along to our “Joining January open meeting on 15th January at 7.15pm in the village hall when you can meet our friendly group of ladies, have a cuppa and find out what the modern day WI is all about.

Community News Kilham Hall Carol Singing
On Wednesday 10th December, Cantley with Branton Parish Council held their annual carol singing event at Kilham Hall in partnership with Branton St Wilfrids Primary School. The event was attended by Miss Oates, Headteacher from St Wilfrids and Father Andrew from St Wilfrids church, who both took an active role in the evening. Mrs Dilks and her team of Mr Dilks, Helen Slade and Martin Woodward who organise the school club, Jubilate, entertained us all and everyone joined in the carol singing. A big thank you to everyone who gave so generously to the raffle which raised £101.00 for Jubilate’s chosen charity, the Harry Mathews Bowel Transplant Trust. Jubilate sang beautifully and we were all treated to a solo from Jack Dunn who started Jubilate off with ‘Once in Royal David’s City’. To finish off the event, Father Christmas paid us a visit and handed out well deserved sweets to all our young singers!
Thank you to Kate Chorlton for the Photographs

The ranges available in store cater for a wide range of sizes, ages, budgets and taste with many styles selected to cover the bits we all like to disguise (bye bye bingo wings!!) So, from gorgeous evening gowns, sparkly cocktail dresses, stylish Mother of the Bride and Groom outfits and amazing fascinators and accessories on the ground floor..... to stunning bridesmaid dresses and breath-taking bridal gowns in the bridal suite, this is a one stop shop for all your special occasion wear, and ......as unique stockists in the area you won’t see the same collections elsewhere locally. Prom dresses are arriving in store weekly and you would be hard put not to find your dream dress, which incidentally is never sold to anyone from the same school going to the same Prom, so if you like a particular style, then it is best to get yours ordered as soon as possible. The team in store are trained to advise what styles suit your body shape, personality and size to assist you with your decision making. Pastels play a big part of Prom dressing for 2015 with elegant styles and strong embellishments proving to be a popular choice for many. A full alteration service is also available, to ensure any dress or outfit is tailored specifically to you – and – we are dab hands at customising your choice to create a more bespoke look should that be your preference, for instance we can add straps, take them away, create sashes, add embellishments, to be honest anything you want really. Check out our website or face book page to see details of our forthcoming Prom Princess event in February where we will have lots of ideas for creating your perfect prom look, including hair and make-up advice as well as goody bags for anyone placing an order. At the moment, there is a fantastic sale running until the end of January, where you can pick up a fabulous dress for a fraction of the original price (including evening and occasion wear) but for readers of this magazine, on production of the advert you will also be entitled to 10% discount on full price items throughout February. We look forward to seeing you soon!!! Victoria House, 13 Church Street, Armthorpe, Doncaster DN3 3AD Tel: 01302 831107 www.victoriahousebridal.co.uk

AUCKLEY SCHOOL Bearilliant Day Out Auckley School’s Year 6 class enjoyed a fantastic day at the ‘Yorkshire Wildlife Park’ this term. They visited the park in order to catch a glimpse of one of the park’s newest recruits, Victor, England’s only polar bear. The visit coincides with their winter topic ‘Frozen Kingdom’. Although he didn’t budge from his wintery cave, snoozing inside his icy home, the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As well as exploring Victor’s habitat, equipped with an 8m lake and an Artic climate, the Year 6’s also had chance to explore the many other wonders that the park offers
Get Bright Day It’s never a dull day here at Auckley School, however pupils throughout the school swapped their school uniforms for something a little more dazzling. As part of the school’s ‘Get Bright Nonuniform day’ children were encouraged to wear as many aluminous clothes as they could manage. The incentive of the day was to urge pupils to stay safe whilst riding their bikes as the nights become darker due to the impending winter months. The day was a success with lots more children

Christmas Nativity Sweeps the School
It’s that time of year again. Yes – it really is Christmas! Parents, Grandparents, brothers, sisters, friends and guardians are all donning their video cameras, grabbing their box of tissues and heading down to Auckley School for the many Nativities happening this festive season. Although, the school’s nativities aren’t completely traditional (a menagerie of animals joining the birth of baby Jesus), it still follows the values of Christmas that have been passed down from generation to generation of Auckley children. But remember, if you come and watch the Nativity this year, ‘Don’t wake the baby!’

God Loves A Cheerful Giver Fund raising seems to be something of a British obsession. Our annual calendar is marked out with Comic Relief in the spring, The Race For Life in the summer, The Poppy Appeal and Children in Need in the Autumn and then Band Aid seems to roll around again most winters. It’s very easy to become cynical or overwhelmed by the seemingly endless need for cash experienced by individuals, organizations such as schools and hospitals or the larger corporations such as Oxfam and Save The Children especially during times of austerity when everyone’s purse strings are under increasing pressure. The easiest response to this is to say ‘Well I pay my taxes and we can’t help everyone. Besides surely if we constantly give to charities doesn’t that mean the St Oswalds government won’t bother funding that particular thing at Church in all anymore?’ We can become desensitized when we see December need and want in the same places year in year out and that is where the challenge to us comes in. One of the reasons I’m proud to belong to our country is that we are known across the world for being one of the most generous when it comes to charitable giving and sending aid to where it’s most needed. In response to the devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean on Boxing Day in 2004 the British public donated a massive £330 Million to charities to help the people of Indonesia and the surrounding area. Every year the impossibly high target generated the previous year by the Children in Need appeal is always beaten. And Band Aid 30, which was released to raise money to help agencies dealing with the Ebola crisis, was the fastest selling single of 2014. The pattern for worship at both churches is varied, ranging from traditional to contemporary. Cynical? Desensitized? I don’t think so. In Our monthly pattern of worship is outlined below. response to a crisis, or as part of our annual budget we give. Sometimes 1st Sunday sacrificially, sometimes loose change, but 9.15am: Finningley - Family Communion. we give and so we should, when we can. 11.15am: Finningley - Baptisms by arrangement In Mark’s gospel an incident in the temple 4.00pm: Auckley - Traditional Holy Communion is recorded where Jesus was watching the 2nd Sunday crowds putting money into the offering 8.00am: Finningley - Traditional Holy Communion box. He saw that many rich people came 9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club forward and gave large amounts but he 11.00am: Auckley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club also saw an elderly widow come and give a very small amount. Jesus highlights that 3rd Sunday whilst giving when we have lots is 9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club admirable giving when we ourselves are in 11.00am: Auckley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club need is more honorable to God. Really 4th Sunday what other people give is none of our 9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club business, it’s more important that we are 11.00am: Auckley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club accountable to ourselves and generous Noon: Auckley - Baptisms by arrangement before God.
