Community News A True Legend! The sad news of Tony Storey will have touched many people in our villages. With a headship at Hayfield School which spanned more than a generation, Mr Storey was the longest serving Headteacher in our country and retired in 2007. Mr Storey was a well loved and inspirational role model for many young people who passed through the doors of Hayfield school, whose reputation was of being one of the best schools in Doncaster. Hayfield School held a memorial on Monday 22nd June giving the community a chance to say goodbye together and remember this very special person. In 2006 The Arrow’s Junior reporter, Lucy Warnock interviewed Mr Storey and this was the only time I had the pleasure of meeting him. Lucy asked Mr Storey ‘What’s your favourite part of working at a school?’ Mr Storey replied ‘The best part is working with people– whether it’s colleagues, pupils, kitchen staff, librarians, it keeps me young! You learn from people with different backgrounds which is very interesting. We employ about 135 staff in total, and there are the pupils as well, so it is a big organisation. So the best part will always be working with people.’ Tony Storeys enthusiasm for people was one of his many strengths but the one he is most likely to be remembered for. Caroline Flint MP said “Tony Storey served for nearly four decades as a headteacher and generations of young people flourished at Hayfield School during that time. He was passionate about education; passionate about our airport and passionate about Doncaster being a great place to live and work. Tony was a straight-talking, larger than life character and a great ambassador for our town. When they made Tony, they broke the mould. I’m not sure we will ever see his like again. My thoughts are with his partner Jan and his family, and I hope they are comforted by the warm tributes from those who knew him well.” A sentiment shared by us all.

‘Dawn fancies her chances’ Auckley resident Dawn Fiddler having heard there was to be no ‘Fancy Dress Parade’ for the second year, was so disappointed in losing this village tradition, is now campaigning for support to re-ignite the enthusiasm amongst local families to make an effort and encourage their children to take part. Dawn said “I just can’t believe what’s happened, when my kids were younger there was up to 40 taking part, then numbers dropped to only 4 the year before last.” Dawn who works at the local playgroup intends to start her campaign there and appeal to mums and dads to get involved. Chairman’s comment- Well done Dawn, you will have the full support of the committee to resurrect this village tradition, my kids entered, and then their kids entered, we have some great photographic memories to look back on. I hope you are successful. Fancy Dress, meet at the village green outside Auckley Friery at 12 noon, Saturday 15th August 2015, we will give it a try one more time.
Kilham Hall News On Tuesday 16th July, the Tuesday Coffee Club was held in aid of the Appeal to raise funds for a Radiotherapy Unit to be installed at the DRI. At the moment, patients being treated for cancer and needing radiotherapy treatment, go over to Weston Park in Sheffield. As radiotherapy treatment is undertaken on a daily basis for between 3-5 weeks at a time, it would be so much easier if Doncaster patients could be treated locally. Thank you to all our members who supported this special Coffee Morning and we are pleased, in turn, to have been able to support such a worthwhile Appeal. The final Coffee Club before the summer recess will be held on Tuesday 21st July and will reopen again on Tuesday 1st September. Meantime, plans are going ahead for interior refurbishments to Kilham Hall. We are hoping to create more space within the Hall and to create a better kitchen area. Nothing has been finalised as yet; we are in the early stages of planning but we are making steady progress and will let you know once we have dates and firm details. Best wishes Kilham Hall Committee

Bottle Tops Recycling If you have been collecting plastic bottle tops for Finnjngley Church for recycling for Diabetes Uk, Sheffield branch, please note that we have been notified that the bottle tops recycling has now ended. Due to ill health and pressures of time and space Val and Peter who have co-ordinated the scheme have had to “put a lid on it” (forgive the pun). More than £1,000 has been raised for the charity and more than 12 tonnes of plastic bottle tops have been kept out of landfill. So a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has helped. Tricia Haigh

Protect what’s important with Aviva Protects Talking about financial protection isn’t easy; after all, people don’t like to think about death or serious illness, let alone consider the financial consequences to their loved ones. But Aviva Protects is here to help. It gives you the chance to talk face to face, with a friendly protection adviser who’ll take the time to get to know you. I’m Caroline Undrill, your local Aviva Community Protection Adviser. I’ll be there to support you as you take the first step in protecting what’s important. It may be something you’ve been worried about for a while, it may be something you’ve been putting off, or you may not even have thought about it before. Whatever stage you’re at, I’ll be with you every step of the way. I am not on commission, I don’t have sales targets to meet and I don’t charge a fee for my services. So there’ll be no hard-sell, just a friendly chat about your financial protection needs. I’ll then recommend a solution from a selection of Aviva’s protection products. However, there’ll be absolutely no obligation to buy anything.
To find out more, ring me on 07827 283578 or email caroline.undrill@aviva.co.uk I look forward to hearing from you. Ice Balloons This half term, Whizz Kids’ (Year 3) theme is “What does water look like?” We launched our theme with an Ice Balloon experiment. The children looked at them and described them; they measured their height, length and diameter; they held them to see how heavy they were and felt the texture. As they began to melt, the children looked at the changes and measured how much water there was.

The temperature of our forehead Class 4 launched their topic ‘What does water look like?’ by looking at some ice hands. We watched them slowly melt throughout the day and change from a solid piece of ice to a liquid. The next part of our learning led us to ask the question, ‘How do we measure temperature?’. We carried out an investigation where we used thermometers to find out the temperatures of different items in our classroom. The temperature of hot water

SSAFA
Serving the Armed Forces Community for 130 years
The Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen Family Association (SSAFA) is the oldest National Military Charity and has been serving the Armed Forces community for well over a century. Established in 1885 when the 2nd Expeditionary Force set sail for Egypt, SSAFA assisted the wives and families who had been left behind. We still fulfil that role today. We also provide advice and support for servicemen and women and veterans of all ages. SSAFA provides lifelong support to those who are serving or who have ever served in the British Army, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force, and their families. Nearly five million people living in the United Kingdom today are estimated to have served in the Armed Forces at some point in their lives. Every year, around 20,000 servicemen and women leave the Services and return to civilian life. That’s why SSAFA’s work is so important. SSAFA in Doncaster We have decades of service in Doncaster, and are able to access financial support from a variety of sources to help those eligible and in need. Each year our Doncaster based volunteer caseworkers help around 70 local people access over £70,000 of charitable funds to meet their needs. In spite of this, it is surprising how many people are not aware of SSAFA, or, if they have heard about SSAFA they don't know what SSAFA does. If you think we can help you, or you would like to volunteer or make a donation please contact your local SSAFA Team: FreePhone 0800 772 3316 doncaster@ssafasouthyorkshire.org.uk www.ssafasouthyorkshire.org.uk We are proud to provide lifelong support to the Armed Forces and their families. Despite a considerable financial loss last year we will continue with our policy of free entry and free parking. We are proud of our reputation for providing a great day out for all ages. Sponsorship We have now developed a network of sponsorship from local business in the area. We welcome again year as our main sponsor Lafarge Tarmac (Finningley) who have been extremely generous with their financial contribution. This has proved invaluable to continue to provide our community with a quality day out for all the family and maintain our ‘free admission’ policy. Our costs continue to grow and each year we try to just ‘balance the books’. We never aim to make profit, but just enough to guarantee the traditions of ‘Auckley Show’ continue, thanks to our existing sponsors and we welcome others. Please get in touch if you would like to contribute, every little helps. You will be maintaining the reputation of Auckley and surrounding villages as being ‘a nice place to live’ and a nice place to ‘do business’. Please make sure you read the schedule and count your exhibits, an extra potato or carrot will not be judged and marked N.T.S. (not to schedule) Vegetables should generally be as large as possible, exceptions being potatoes and beetroot where judges like to see good clean medium sized exhibits, look for the requisite number of even sized exhibits – 4 good medium carrots will usually beat 3 big ones plus a little one. 3. Judges tend to favour cucumber or courgettes with the flower or its remains intact. 4. For the adult class, paintings etc should be nicely framed and clean. Not so important in the children’s class. 5. Cookery classes should be well cooked but not overdone, again make sure you enter the correct quantity. Check that the pastry of custards and flans is fully cooked. 6. Jam, pickles etc should be in clean clear glass containers. 7. Arts and crafts exhibits should be clean and free of creases. 8. To enable judging to be done fairly, please do not put your name on the front of the exhibits. 9. Flowers should be as fresh as possible; dropped petals may loose you points. 10. Wines – although any bottle will be accepted, to really impress the judge use 26 fluid oz clear punted bottles fitted with a flanged cork stopper. Screw tops will be accepted. 11 Beer Lager, any bottle will be accepted but to impress the judge, the use of 1 pint plain brown bottles, sealed with a crown top is ideal. 12. Please do not be afraid to have a go, challenge your neighbour to have a go, a little friendly competition can be good fun. If you are beaten, resolve to win next year. Please Note every effort will be made to look after your exhibits, but accidents do happen. So please do not enter any item of extreme monetary or sentimental value that could possibly be damaged.
AUCKLEY SHOW RULES 1. All exhibits to be staged between 8.30am and 10.45 am on the day. 2. Exhibits must be grown by and be the property of the exhibitor. The exception to this is class 38 and 43 to 50 inclusive and class 102. 3. If, in the opinion of the judges, none of the exhibits in a particular class merit a prize, the committee reserves the right to withhold any prize in that class. 4. The decision of the judges is final and binding. Any protest regarding interpretation of these rules, or any other matter, must be made to the show secretary on the day of the show. 5. No exhibits to be removed before 3.45pm. Exhibits not claimed by 4.00pm will be presumed donated and will be sold. An auction will take place at 4.00pm. The proceeds will be used to cover the cost of the show. 6. The committee will not be liable for damage or loss to persons or property. 7. Exhibits must not have been shown in the previous year. 8. In other respects, the show will be conducted in accordance with the rules and standards of the Royal Horticulture Society, as laid down in their handbook.

News from St Oswald’s Academy Finningley We love Messy Church Recently the messy church subject has looked at the Pentecost and a while ago the children planted sunflower seeds representing the appearance of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles and the “birth of the Church” and some of these plants have now flowered. The pupils love the messy church as it shows the stories and religious aspects of Christian celebrations through creative and artistic lessons in which the children learn as well as create something they can take home.

New beginnings Over the past school year we have experienced many changes. We have said goodbye to some lovely teachers and members of staff and are now welcoming returning teachers and a few new ones who will join the supportive and dedicated team who’s aim it is to encourage nurture and teach our children. We will have the privilege of welcoming our new Head teacher Mrs Patton in September, she has already made many visits to the school and is as excited as our students to see what’s in store for next term.
Grease is the word As the year comes to close staff and pupils are gearing up for a performance of Grease. Year 6 students with the support of year 5 students are perfecting their quiffs and puffing up their skirts for jiving and looking especially cool as they get ready to recreate the famous songs of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John
Peddle power As the weather improves the school have been promoting ”Bike It” which encourages children to cycle or scoot to school. This year the Golden Lock has appeared and each child has the chance of receiving the golden lock. It is a surprise as it is secretly placed onto a bike or scooter during the day and the lucky winner receives a prize. The children who do ride and scoot to school have also had the chance to enjoy a yummy extra breakfast. The BIKE IT crew have happily distributed healthy breakfast choices to children as they have arrived at the gates.
Class of 2015 And finally the year 6 students are finishing their time with St Oswald’s in a few weeks time. They will start by visiting their new High Schools and experiencing what is in store from September. It may feel daunting to some but it will quickly turn into a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, make some new friends and learn more fantastic things.

School News From Auckley School Matilda Visit Year 6 enjoyed a fabulous time in London this term as part of their end of year celebrations following the completion of their final exams. The trip was planned in order for the class to inspect the inner workings of a professional production of Matilda as the class will be putting on their own version of the musical at the end of this school year. A great time was certainly had by all with a number of the children appearing inspired by what they had seen, apart from a couple who left disappointed that Danny DeVito was in fact only in the film.
Dad’s to Lunch In celebration of Fathers’ Day, Auckley School invited ‘Dad’s to Lunch’. As part of the occasion, Fathers were able to accompany their child to lunch and experience a good, old-fashioned school dinner. Parents and children alike had a wonderful afternoon. All around school, smiles, laughter and a warming atmosphere could be sensed by everyone involved. As the Dad’s vacated the school grounds, tears and tantrums were certainly in abundance with many wishing that the lunch time had lasted longer than an hour – some of the children were quite upset too …
Multicultural Arts Week This term, the children here at Auckley School were exposed to a number of cultures far removed from their own their multicultural arts week. The children cooked classic Indian dishes, produced tie -dye t-shirts matching African patterns and also created a huge patchwork tortoise which boasts a multitude of varying patterns and pictures resembling the animals on BBC’s Tinga Tinga Tales. The whole week was great fun for the children here at Auckley. Some even exclaimed that they wish to one day live in India or Africa! The children were able to take a lot away from the week due to the interactive, fun and enthralling topical work that they were subjected to. The pictures inserted portray a plethora of fantastic work created by the children here at Auckley School.

HAYFIELD LANE PRIMARY BELIEVE AND ACHIEVE
Mrs John Lewis and I had the pleasure of travelling to the Department of Education this week to discuss how well our children are performing in Singapore Maths Mastery sessions (which we are trialling for the Government). We are so proud to be leaders in this inspirational field as we strive to achieve the best possible outcomes for our children. In the new academic year we will be holding parent workshops for all to examine how it works and look at the amazing impact on ALL children at all ability levels. This week we also welcomed Head teachers from Calderdale to examine our Novel Study work, which we are also extremely proud of. There is a buzz of excitement surrounding our new texts and I would like to say a huge thank you to parents and members of the community who have helped with resources. Miss Treble (parent) has wowed us with her artistic talents in Year 3’s Into the Forest scene. Our parents are as creative as our children ! We are also thrilled with the NEW nursery canopy . It will be wonderful for our children to be able to access the outdoors in all weathers. I will share photographs in the next Auckley Arrow edition. Kind Regards Mrs Tempest (Head teacher) YEAR 5 Novel Study
HERE’S A COMMOTION IN THE OCEAN! Our Nursery and Reception children are thoroughly enjoying their NOVEL STUDY this half term. Their models of sea creatures, pirate letters, building of rock pools etc have excited and engaged all. Take a

LEARNING USING THE OUTDOORS IS SO MUCH FUN! Our Year 1 and 2 children are currently enjoying FOREST SCHOOL activities to enhance learning. Year 2 will be visiting the Doncaster Forest School however we also use woodland areas in and around school to develop this provision ourselves. Take a look at our Year 1 class taking part in den building inside and outside as part of their Novel Study project on ‘Where the Wild Things Are’.

Free Citizens Advice
Debt Service Available North East Doncaster Citizens Advice have seen a huge increase in the number of people seeking help with debt issues. During the first 3 months of the year we handled almost £1.7 million of debt with almost 500 people turning to us for help with debts during that period. The rising cost of energy, food and housing is putting extra pressure on people's finances, with no end to the problem in sight. Karen Bothamley, Chief Officer, North East Doncaster CAB, said: “Some budgets are at breaking point - people who have never experienced money worries before are finding their finances increasingly tight as rises in day to day spending like keeping their home warm, getting to work and putting food on the table is sending them over the edge. “Payday loans, credit cards and overdrafts are being used to top up people's income as wages are static. There are things people can do to get on top of their finances, including making sure they're getting all of the help available, aren't paying over the odds for things like gas and electricity and prioritising their spending to make sure there is money for essentials like rent, energy bills and water. It is important people don't wait for debts to mount before they seek help. A few early actions could stave off a future financial meltdown. “If we can help, please contact us on 01302 846745 or 01405 741457. We won’t judge, and our service is free and completely confidential.” North East Doncaster CAB is a registered charity number 1096497 providing free, confidential, independent and impartial advice on any subject to all, without discrimination for any reason. Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority no. 617681

Christian Aid Collection in Finningley, Auckley and Blaxton Thank you to everyone who has supported Christian Aid Week this year either through your financial contribution or by helping with the house to house collection or coffee morning. This year we collected £1,900.71, which with gift aid donations added made £2,133.62. Christian Aid will use your donation to help some of the poorest people living in some of the most difficult places across the world. So once again thank you for helping those for whom life itself is a huge struggle. Tricia and Barbara, on behalf of Finningley, Auckley and Blaxton Parish.

Teenage Kicks I hated being a teenager. I hated school, boys, having no control over my life and I was pretty miserable for the duration of my adolescence. ‘It’s a difficult age’ people used to say. On the one hand you’re told that you’re growing up and need to take responsibility but on the other hand you’re still too young to really understand things. I think the thing that’s most difficult about being a teenager is that it’s the time in our lives when we are most concerned about what other people think of us. Teenagers don’t want to stand out from the crowd and the thought of any sort of embarrassment fills them with dread. We also have a tendency to demonize teenagers. Since the 1950s it’s been all too easy to point the finger at that age group as the cause of all the world’s ills and to say that ‘they’ are to blame. However consider these facts. Ellie Simmonds won an Olympic Gold Medal for swimming at the age of 13 and the following year she became the youngest person ever to be awarded an MBE. Tom Daley won an Olympic Bronze Medal at the age of 18. Stephen Sutton died at the age of 19 but not before spending the final year of his life working tirelessly to raise millions of pounds for the Teenage Cancer Trust. These may seem like outstanding examples but if you add these to the thousands of teenagers who carry out voluntary work or are young carers or coping with disabilities then we have a picture of a generation that are focused, strong and courageous and actually dealing with things that would leave many adults struggling. I was listening to Radio One recently (at the age of 44 I was probably doing this illegally but I’m a rebel) and the programme had an ‘Agony Aunt’ section where listeners rang in with their problems and two ‘experts’ were on hand to give advice. It was quite run of the mill stuff but one particular comment I heard really struck a chord with me. A 15 year old rang in and was struggling with his confidence and the expert gave him what I thought was pretty sound advice. He said ‘The older you get the more you realize that no one really knows what they are doing. Everyone’s just winging it.’ I think I may get this printed on a t-shirt as advice I wish my teenage self could have had!
