elcome to the June issue of the Branton & Auckley Arrow. This month’s Arrow has lots of good news regarding local fund raising and the grants received to help improve facilities within our villages. Work has begun at St Oswalds Church to make much needed improvements to this beautiful and well attended church. We hope to keep you updated over the coming months as the project aims to be complete by August 2017. Finningley Scouts and Rainbows have been chosen by the Coop community fund to support future development of the Scout Hut and days out for Rainbows. The Finingley Village Community group has just awarded The Vulcan £400 from its coffee mornings. Read all about it in this months Arrow. So much is still going on to help improve the safety of our villages, Auckley have submitted a petition with over 500 signatures for a safe crossing area at Lidgett Road which gets busier every day! I am hoping the crossing in Branton will be in full working order by the end of June, one of the beacons is still not connected to an electricity supply but should be sorted soon and it’s great to see CWB Parish Council exploring the need for a local defibrillator. The deadline for the July issue will be Wednesday 14th June. The Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in June.

Community News Work begins on improving the facilities for Holy Trinity and St. Oswalds’s Church Finningley, in Doncaster. The church has now been emptied of it’s furnishings and the flooring taken up and removed, prior to the under floor heating being installed as well as the new floor. This is the beginning of the project and a work force is now on site. A camera has been set up which will automatically record the progress for future viewing. The project which is being funded largely by a £50,000 grant from WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund will provide the church with new heating, new flooring, a new kitchen new toilets and new chairs once it is completed in August of this year. We are very excited that the project is now starting to take shape. The Reverend Neil Redeyoff Rector of St. Oswald’s Church says, “ It’s great to see our vision for this vital community facility closer to reality. We are extremely grateful for the funding WREN has given us and we are looking forward to using our new facilities for the villages of Finningley, Blaxton and Auckley. WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Doncaster Council have now agreed to a traffic survey of the crossroads. We will keep you updated of any developments. Thank you all once again for your support. AUCKLEY

PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER APRIL/MAY 2017 Annual Parish Council Meeting Mrs. J. Worthington and Mr. S. Featherstone were unanimously re-elected as Chair and Vice Chair respectively at the Annual meeting of Auckley Parish Council held on 10th May 2017. More details relating to the Council can be viewed on the Council web site: www.auckleyvillage.co.uk Provision of Pedestrian Crossing Following a campaign for the provision of a pedestrian crossing at Hurst Lane outside the Hayfield School, DMBC's Highway Officers have agreed that a crossing is feasible at this location. However the cost to undertake the work will be approximately £30,000 and, with no funds currently available from the Local Authority, the Parish Council has been contacting local businesses and organisations in the area to ask whether they might consider giving a donation. Two local Parish Councils with children in the school's catchment area have pledged funds towards the project, and offers from other sources are in the pipeline. Speeding Traffic on Main Street DMBC's Highways Officer agreed to undertake a traffic/pedestrian survey near the Lidgett Crossroads after the Easter holidays. This followed complaints from residents and the Parish Council that the volume and speed of traffic on Main Street, is making it difficult for residents to cross the road. Unfortunately the survey has had to be postponed until later in the year due to road works which are scheduled to take place over several weeks in the Summer. Provision of Recreational Equipment at Hayfield Lane Some progress has finally been made concerning the provision of recreational facilities on the former RAF sports field at Hayfield Lane. Staff from Peel have had meetings with Officers from DMBC and Parish Councillors to work out a suitable scheme and, once this is finalised, a planning application will be submitted later this year. The project will include a football field, a MUGA, Under 5's play area and a small sports pavilion.

Do you know an elderly lonely person? In today’s busy world dominated by social media, loneliness is often seen as a negative and slightly awkward thing to discuss. But the truth is that many elderly people really do feel lonely and isolated. Often, their family live at a distance, important friends or colleagues may have moved away or no longer be alive.

So what can really help? The potential difference a new friendship can make is enormous. Private befriending provides companionship for elderly people - the chance to make a friend, participate in new activities and go to a variety of places. This is not homecare or task-based! It is social care which elderly people need and enjoy the most. In practical terms, befriending means regular and reliable social care and support. Once a week or fortnight, befrienders visit their clients and take them on a pleasant outing, perhaps to a garden centre or an arm to lean on during a shopping trip. Befrienders might also provide support at hospital appointments and transport in a safe vehicle. Whatever the activity, the common theme is a welcome change of scene, one-to-one time chatting over a cup of tea and getting to know each other. Ultimately, having a regular visit from your befriender promotes wellbeing, security and enjoyment of life. Befrienders aren’t like some carers who have to rush in and out of your house to do a task - befrienders are friends! They make people feel supported and that someone is “on their team, looking out for them”. It has even been described as “rent a daughter”! Regular users of the service often say they so appreciate having something different in the diary to look forward to. Befrienders can also offer concrete help with transport and outings, paperwork and forms. They can often “signpost” or suggest new services or groups that might be of interest to you. But above all, the most important part of the visit is very often those conversations over a cup of tea/coffee and just having a really good chat. If you think you or someone you know would benefit from befriending, please call Helen on 077645 77831, 01302 773004 or visit her website www.helenwarnockbefriending.weebly.com Helen has worked for the Alzheimers Society and Sue Ryder for 14 years as a Dementia Support worker and a befriender and would be delighted to hear from you.

June 2017 Newsletter www.cantleywithbrantonparish.co.uk Annual Parish Council Meeting Councillor Michelle Sidebottom and Councillor David Chorlton were unanimously elected as Chair and Vice-Chair respectively at the annual parish council meeting on 3 May 2017. The details of all the council members can be found on the parish council website www.cantleywithbrantonparish.co.uk or on the parish council notice boards.

Provision of New Outdoor Equipment for Kilham Lane Recreation Ground DMBC has formally approved the scheme put forward by the parish council which subject to sufficient funding being available will include a path around the perimeter of the recreation ground for walking and cycle training for young children and additional benches adjacent to the new apparatus. The necessary procedures are now being enacted and it is hoped that at least some of the equipment will be in place for the summer holiday period. Residents are reminded that dogs are not permitted on the recreation ground due to the health risks that can arise particularly to young children.

Fencing Around Grass Verges on Valley Drive and Rural Crescent The parish council has submitted a planning application for approval to erect birdsmouth fencing along the grass verge opposite the school and to a small area at the junction of Valley Drive and Rural Crescent. Over a number of years the parish council has received complaints and concerns from residents regarding the condition of the verges and the safety of children using the footpath due to vehicles parking on the verges at the beginning and end of the school day.

Speeding Traffic on Whiphill Top Lane Following complaints by residents of Whiphill Top Lane the parish council has approached South Yorkshire Police to request that enforcement measures are carried out in an attempt to reduce speeding traffic on Whiphill Top Lane. At the present time however due to no incidents or casualties occurring in the last three years no resources can currently be made available. DMBC will continue to carry out regular speed monitoring checks to provide further evidence of traffic speeds to the police as appropriate.

Dog Fouling/Litter on Pavements in Branton The parish council continues to receive complaints from residents regarding dog fouling on pavements and DMBC’s Enforcement Team has visited Branton to identify the most affected areas. A number of fines have been issued and this has been welcomed by the parish council in order to keep the streets clean and tidy.

Provision of a Defibrillator Consideration is being given to the purchase of a defibrillator to be sited in a suitable location that can be accessed at all times by the public. If it is felt that this would be highly beneficial and any letters of support and any suggestions for suitable locations would be greatly appreciated in order to assist with any bids for funding that may be submitted. A defibrillator has been recently obtained at St Wilfrid’s School and the Yorkshire Wildlife Park is currently considering the purchase of a second one to site at both its first aid stations.

Auckley School News This term we have been very busy in Reception. We visited Toothill’s farm to see the new born lambs as well as the horses and cows. We then went on a ‘Moon adventure’ to celebrate the end of our space topic and had chocolate moon milk and homemade cakes. We have been focusing on traditional tales with a focus on ‘The Three Little Pigs’. The children have learnt the story off by heart and we have begun to change it to create our own stories. We have also read the gingerbread man and baked some of our own – they were delicious. After reading ‘Goldilocks and The Three Bears’, we made porridge and the children all decided which ingredients they wanted to add. The most popular included banana, chocolate, syrup, sugar and strawberries. On Friday we waved goodbye to the chicks which we watched hatch out in school. It was brilliant to see them grow so quickly. To finish off the topic the children have made Easter baskets, decorated chicks and we have been busily planning an egg hunt.

Reception

In Year 1

we had a lovely day for World Book Day. We loved dressing up and showing off our costumes. We particularly enjoyed it when it was our turn to strut our stuff in the hall in front of the whole school. Our day was full of lots activities. We drew ourselves dressed as our characters, we wrote book reviews and we talked about our favourite books. As we were focusing on the book ‘That Rabbit belongs to EMILY BROWN’, we also continued to retell the story through Talk for Writing. We absolutely loved retelling this story and we especially loved using our voices to act out the different characters. Within the story, a little girl called Emily Brown owns a soft toy called Stanley the rabbit. We decided to design our own toys and we described them using some amazing adjectives. We finished off the day by choosing a story to listen to being read by one the teachers. World Book Day was a fantastic day and it was enjoyed by all of us in Year 1.

Year 3 have been studying the Romans this term and were lucky enough to visit a Roman fort and become Romans for the day! We went to Murton Park in York. When we arrived, we were taken to see a Celtic village and told some interesting facts about how the Celtic people lived. We were then put into regiments by the Centurion (Roman Officer in charge) and marched through the Celtic village to the Roman fort. He then showed us to our barracks, where we got to dress up as soldiers. Once we had familiarised ourselves with our barracks, we were then ordered to line up outside, ready to be given our next instruction. The Centurion gave us a tour of the fort. We even got to see a typical Roman toilet which was very different from the toilets we have today. Once the tour was over, we split into two groups, one group made oil lamps out of clay, just as the soldiers would have done, and the other group went with the Centurion to officially sign up as Roman soldiers for the day. They got to write a letter home to their loved ones telling them what they missed most of all about home. The two groups then swapped over. In the afternoon we had ‘drill’ training followed by weapons training. We learnt how to use a sword and how to throw a javelin. Finally, we went outside the fort and our training was put into practice when we came across a lone woman from the Celtic village. She tried her best to stand up to us but we defeated her. The Centurion was impressed with us and so paid us all our day’s wage. We had an amazing day but were pleased when we became ourselves again. During the Spring Term, Year 5 have been learning all about Space and the Solar System. We have enjoyed learning all about the different planets and even Black Holes. We have also concentrated on our planet and have located the International Date Line, The Prime Meridian, the topics and understood why we have day and night as well as seasons. Also in the Spring Term, we have learnt all about air and water resistance in Science, and played Diamond Cricket in P.E. We are looking forward to the summer term and our exciting topics including ‘Scream Machine’ and our residential to Alton Towers in June!

These two lovely crossbreed girls are looking for a new home together. Lily (black & white)- is 10, and Sasha is 7, and they have lived together from puppies. They are really affectionate, happy dogs who would love a new sofa to curl up on. They are still quite lively, and would really enjoy nice walks and a garden to play in. They are both good with other dogs, cats and children, and are no trouble in the house. They are neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. If you are interested in meeting these smashing girls, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705
