Welcome to the June

Issue of the Congratulations to all our Winners from last month’s Human League competition. Jane Keightley from Grazelound and Russ Shelbourne from Auckley, both won a pair of tickets for the County Enclosure at Doncaster Racecourse. Lucy Smith from Balby won our facebook competition. To win the chance of tickets to see Madness at Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday 27th June, Please like and share our facebook page—Arrow Publications. Good Luck everyone! Thank you again to all our local primary schools who provide us with news from inside school. Well done to everyone who has just sat their SATS in Year 2 and 6 and all of you who have studied long and hard for your GCSE’s and A Level’s, good luck to you all. Those who live in Branton will have noticed we no longer have a Traffic Patrol at the crossing on Doncaster Road. Although we are expecting a Zebra Crossing soon, we were hoping to keep the patrol for school times. Cantley with Branton Parish Council are looking into this so fingers crossed! In the meantime, if drivers through the villages could please be patient at school times, crossing Doncaster Road with children in your care is a scary experience! Deadline for the July issue is Wednesday 17th June. The July Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in June.

Best Wishes

Community News Kilham Hall News On Tuesday 19th May, the second, annual outing of the Tuesday Coffee Club took place, this time to Millstones near Harrogate. Once again, Buckleys of Blaxton provided the transport and driver and our party of 35 gathered at Kilham Hall ready to set off at 9.30pm. On arrival at Millstones we enjoyed morning refreshments before our 2 course meal everyone having ordered from the menu before the actual day. There was a game of Bingo and musical entertainment before setting off home at 4pm and arriving back at Kilham Hall around 6pm. The day was enjoyed by all and, no doubt, there will be another outing organised next year. On Tuesday 16th June, Tuesday Coffee Club will be donating the morning’s takings to the fund, established by Mrs Yvonne Woodcock, raising money for a Radiotherapy Unit to be installed at the DRI. At present, all those needing cancer radiotherapy treatment have to go to Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield. Weston Park is ‘second to none’ for patients in this area but it would be so much easier if Doncaster patients could have their radiotherapy treatment at the DRI. Coffee Club would like to support this fundraising initiative and hope that there will be a good turnout on the 16th June. Best wishes Kilham Hall Committee

The 58TH DONCASTER (BESSACARR) SCOUT GROUP REG CHARITY NO 524731

58th Doncaster Scout Group Fun Night 58th Doncaster Scout Group is running a fun and games activity night on Tuesday 16th June at Hawthorn School, Elmham Road, Cantley, Doncaster between 6.30pm and 8.30pm. The Scout Group caters for boys and girls, between the ages of 6 and 14 and provides fun and structured activity nights, days out and also camping trips. The Group also has a team of adult leaders which work within the different sections. The Group is over 70 years old and was based at a permanent headquarters behind the shops on Everingham Road. Sadly in 2001 the building was subjected to an arson attack and was burnt to the ground. Since this time, the Group has been operating out of temporary bases, whilst seeking funding to build a new state of the art headquarters in Cantley. The Group used to welcome in excess of 150 youngsters to the various Group nights, however, since the loss of the headquarters, the number of young people involved has slowly began to decline. The aim of the activity night on the 16th June is to try and recruit more young people and adult support into the Group. On the night there will be lots of different activities and games taking place, as well as members of the Group and leader team on hand to answer any questions or queries that you may have in a relaxed and informal setting. If you or your child would like to become part of one of the largest youth movements in the world then please pop along to the activity night for more information and an insight into what we do! If you do want to attend then please send a quick email to the email address below with the number of people attending, so we can gauge potential numbers for the night. Should you not be able to attend, but still want some more information about the Group or what we get up to, please feel free to email graeme7786@hotmail.co.uk for further information.

Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust – founded 1972, is Doncaster’s oldest local cancer charity and still to this day only exists with voluntary help and the constant support of Doncaster people.

Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust

Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust was launched in 1972 by its present secretary, to purchase first line equipment to diagnose and treat cancer for the inhabitants of Doncaster. Since then we have donated over 92 pieces of equipment to Doncaster Hospitals totalling in excess of £1,500,000 plus building and equipping Doncaster’s St John’s Hospice phase 1 and 2, a further £4,600,000. Our latest project to purchase a £600,000 state of the art MRI Scanner for Doncaster Royal Infirmary was achieved earlier this year and handed over to DRI in February. Our latest project is to purchase a state of the art 3D imaging scanner that will enable Doncaster patients to receive their radiotherapy treatment in Doncaster. (Currently, this treatment is carried out in Sheffield).

If you would like to make a donation or would like to help out at any of our fundraising events, please contact Yvonne Woodcock on 07788 184419 or e-mail info@dcdt.co.uk

We’ve Got Talent!

Doncaster Guides Got Talent show was held at the Auckley Parish Centre last week to raise funds for the Bluebell Wood Hospice and Treetops House (Sheffield Children’s Hospital). Caroline Flint was invited to judge the show and said “I’ve been known to sing and dance a little in my time, but the guides taking part in this talent show were fantastic. “The performers and stage crew ensured a packed hall was entertained for two hours. Without their efforts, the event would not have raised such important funds for these good causes. These guides have got talent!” 73rd Doncaster Guides Unit Leader, Katie Shearman said: “I was completely gobsmacked at how well the girls had done – and I was delighted that Caroline, Sheila Warner and Marie Newitt were able to support the event.” The idea for the event came from guides who were in the same year at Hayfield School as Ellie Newitt, age 13, who was diagnosed last year with leukaemia and has been undergoing treatment at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. PHOTO SHOWS: The judges joining the performers on stage after the show. The judges were Caroline Flint, Sheila Warner and Marie Newitt.

June 2015 Newsletter Annual Parish Council Meeting Jennifer Worthington and Michelle Sidebottom were elected as Chair and Vice-Chair respectively at the Annual Parish Council meeting on 20 May 2015. As the four year term of office for all councillors expired on 7 May 2015 all councillors were required to seek re-election and Yvonne Butterworth, Michelle Sidebottom, Gillian Warrender and Jennifer Worthington along with new Councillor David Chorlton were automatically elected. Marjorie Caygill and Neville Williams were co-opted to the two remaining vacancies at the meeting .A full list of members of the council is given below. The next election will take place in 2021 to coincide with the election of DMBC Ward Councillors.

Update on Conversion of Changing Rooms to a Meeting Room Due to the cost of the work being slightly more than the budget provision a bid for the additional funding has been submitted to Derbyshire Environmental Trust and the outcome should be known in the next few weeks.

Update on the Provision of a Zebra Crossing on Doncaster Road Following meetings and correspondence between the parish council and Highway Officers, Doncaster Council has confirmed that funding has been set aside from Section 106 monies made available from the Woodlands Walk development to fund a zebra crossing on Doncaster Road. The location of the crossing will be decided once the new retail outlets on Quarry Lane are opened and a survey has been completed.

Reporting of Concerns to Doncaster Council or the Police Whilst the parish council is always available to listen to and initiate any action required in respect of concerns raised by residents in most cases raising the matter directly with DMBC by ringing 01302 736000 can prompt a quicker response particularly if a number of complaints are raised. If a vehicle is causing an obstruction e.g. due to parking on a footpath or blocking an access this should be reported direct to the police by ringing 101 as this constitutes an offence and can result in legal action being taken.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL JUNE 2015 NEWSLETTER Hurst Lane Members of Auckley Parish Council are concerned to learn that a pupil who attends the Hayfield School at Hurst Lane was recently involved in an accident with a car when crossing the road outside the school. Fortunately the injuries sustained were not life-threatening, but the incident highlights the dangers that children face when crossing the road on their way to and from school, exacerbated by the rapid increase in the volume of vehicular traffic using Hurst Lane. The Parish Council has campaigned over many years for the speed limit outside the school at Hurst Lane to be reduced from 40 to 30 mph, plus the provision of a pedestrian crossing in the interests of children's safety, but the official response to requests is that the safety record does not warrant these improvements Council has written to the three District Councillors regarding this latest incident, and will continue to fight for safety measures to be implemented.

B1396 Main Street Members of Council decided to undertake a traffic survey, prompted by concerns regarding the increased volume of vehicular traffic using Main Street, which results in congestion at the Lidgett Crossroads. The survey was carried out on 17th March 2015 from 8.00 - 9.00 a.m. and showed that the twoway traffic flow on the B1396 was 1,120, ( 924 in 2012). An additional 406 vehicles were driven onto Hurst Lane and 48 vehicles emerged from School Lane, making a total of 1,574 vehicular movements in 1 hour. In view of the increased traffic movements, and in the interests of road safety the Council contacted DMBC Highways to ask for the provision of traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing at the crossroads, however, the reply was that according to Police data the junction has a good long term casualty record, showing no cause for concern which might prompt priority action with respect to the numbers or severity of road traffic collisions which have occurred. In this situation there are no plans to undertake further work at this junction.

School News From Auckley Academy Party Time!

The countdown to the summer holidays has well and truly begun for Year 6 after they completed their SATS tests earlier this term. All their hard work and dedication throughout this academic year was put to the test in a number of demanding exams. A huge sigh of relief echoed all around the school after the completion of their last test. Due to their hard work over the course of both this year and their previous years climbing the rungs of the education ladder, the pupils were treated to an afternoon of excitement as the children had the chance to let their hair down, disengage their brains and soothe their writing arms as they danced and partied until the final bell at the end of the day. Everyone at Auckley School is extremely proud of the Year 6’s unyielding exuberance to perform at the highest possible level of maturity, professionalism and willingness to achieve, something that they themselves should be incredibly proud of too.

Our Special Afternoon

Nursery children at Auckley School spent a special afternoon remembering our friend Sianne who very sadly passed away. We had cake at snack time and all released a balloon into the sky for Sianne. Our happy memories of Sianne will always be with us.

Forest School Fun

The children in Reception have been taking part in ‘Forest School’ in order to develop their understanding and knowledge of their environment. All of the children had a great time taking their learning outside!

Royal Visit to Auckley This past month has been a historic one for the Royal Family. The Queen has reached her 89th birthday, Prince William and Princess Kate have given birth to their second child and, perhaps most prominently, a visit by her Royal Highness to our very own Auckley School. Year 1 could not believe their eyes as Queen Elizabeth II entered their classroom one afternoon last term. Although the children hoped that her majesty would visit Auckley School, they certainly doubted that she would actually accept their invitation. Greeted by not only a classroom of beaming smiles and lavish outfits fit for … well … the Queen, her Royal Highness was also treated to a banquet of scrummy delicacies – most notably, cucumber sandwiches, chocolate muffins and strawberry scones – all freshly baked and prepared by the children earlier in the day. The afternoon was organised alongside Year 1’s current topic – ‘Big City Bright Lights’. Although she had to pop off before the end of the day, the children understood that one should not take up too much of Her Majesty’s time but certainly hope that she will visit again one day soon. Special thanks to Pauline Holmes for helping Year 1 with this special occasion.

Sunday Fun

When I was growing up I chose to go to church because I wanted to sing in the choir. I still love singing now although I know, despite the fact that I went to church by choice, it was often a struggle for my parents to get me out of bed on a Sunday morning and get me there. Once I was there I enjoyed the singing bits of the service but I admit that for years much of the sermon and the readings largely went over my head. I used to see other children going out of the service to a thing they called ‘Sunday School’, which to me sounded terribly dull. Who would want to go to school on a Sunday? It was only later in life that I came to appreciate what I’d missed. Even when I went to theological collage I was amazed how much more biblical knowledge others had simply because they’d been taught it at Sunday School from a very early age. I’m sure many of you will remember their days in Sunday School and might be surprised by how much of that instruction you have retained. Of course Sunday School now isn’t like it used to be. Much like mainstream education it has moved with the times. I love the part of our service when the children come in and show us what they’ve been doing. As well as praying together and hearing Bible stories they also play games and do crafts. One thing I’m certain of is that it’s never boring. Both our church in Auckley and our church in Finningley are blessed with teams of people who run our Sunday Clubs (as they are called these days). In Finninlgey we are also running the Youth Alpha course designed for teenagers to explore their faith. Are your children or grandchildren looking for things to do on a Sunday morning? If they are why not bring them along to one of our Sunday Clubs to see if they like it? It’s free, all of our volunteers are DBS checked and parents are welcome to leave children and pick them up at the end. St Oswald’s Sunday Club meets in the Village Hall in Finningley at 9:15 and St Saviour’s meets in church at 11am. These run every Sunday except the first Sunday of the month when our services are child friendly and the children stay in church. We’d love to see you there! Revd. Louise Tinniswood St Saviour’s, Auckley and St Oswald’s & Holy Trinity, Finningley
