Welcome
to the June issue of
Branton & Auckley Arrow So far, so good! Things are looking up for us all to finally get back to something which resembles normality. It has been so nice to be able to sit inside a restaurant or enjoy a glass of wine with friends without worrying about how many layers you need. It’s great to see our fitness classes and gyms reopening and people getting back into a routine. Still got my fingers crossed we will be safe to reopen as usual from 21st June. Best of luck to all of our local pubs, cafes, wine bars and restaurants! We have had a busy month with lots of litter pickin’ community effort! I feel so lucky to live in an area where so many people care and are willing to give up their time to keep our villages looking clean and tidy. Congratulations and thank you to everyone who took part and to those who are planning their own litter picks later this month. The Auckley Show committee is still hopeful that their plans for the biggest and best show yet will be a major success! We have the latest update on the fantastic array of entertainment in this month’s Arrow, this is really beginning to look like the event of the year! We also have a notice from Cantley with Branton Parish Council which is advertising vacancies for members. If you want to get involved in your community and make a change, please contact the clerk before 4th June 2021, details on p14. The deadline for the July issue is Wednesday 16th June. The July issue will be distributed the last weekend in June.

Branton & Old Cantley Litter Pick Cantley with Branton Parish Council organised their first litter pick of the year on Saturday 1st May. Luckily, the weather was good and there was a turnout of 18 volunteers. Many of the regulars attended and there were some new faces too. 39 bags of rubbish were filled in total, the majority of which had been collected in Old Cantley. One of our volunteers had tried to fit a car seat, which had been dumped on Gatewood Lane, into his car but sadly failed as the seat was too big. This was reported to DMBC so they could come and collect it. However, an eagle eyed motorist caught this scene on their dash cam and reported our volunteer to DMBC for fly tipping!! After the initial shock of receiving a notice to pay a fine, thankfully, our volunteer did see the funny side. It’s great to see locals doing their bit to stop fly tipping, hope they catch a real one next time! Just for your information, DMBC withdrew the notice as soon as they were made aware of the situation, so please do not let this put you off volunteering your time in the future. Thank you to all of the volunteers who turned up on the day and to David and Kate Chorlton who supervised the litter pick. The next Litter Pick event will be around the end of July, early August with dates published in the Arrow and on the Parish Council facebook page.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL JUNE NEWSLETTER Election of Chairman Mrs. Jennifer Worthington was elected Chairman of the Parish Council at the Annual Meeting held on 12th May 2021 Election of Vice Chairman Mr. Stephen Featherstone was elected Vice Chairman of the Council at the Annual Meeting. Riverside Park Two picnic tables with benches are due to be installed on the park in the next few weeks. These will provide welcome seating for parents whilst their children are exploring the play equipment, and anyone wishing to have a picnic. Following heavy persistent rainfall during the winter, the area of the park nearest to River Way became flooded, and pedestrian access to the park from River Way and Main Street was not possible for some time. Now that the water has subsided, Council is obtaining quotations for drainage work to be undertaken in order to prevent further flooding problems. New Hayfield Recreation Park Football posts have now been installed on the football field, giving footballers the choice of playing on the field or inside the Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). The majority of dog owners are responsible people who use the containers provided for disposal of dog waste, however, a minority have been depositing plastic bags of dog excreta on the ground close to the new litter bin, recently placed on the field. Council would be grateful if residents could use the red ‘Dog Waste’ container on the children’s play area for the disposal of this material. Fly Tipping Dumping of rubbish continues to be a problem at the far end of Common Lane where the lane branches off to the right towards the A614 Thorne Road. Council wishes to thank members of the public who kindly took part in recent litter picking at Common Lane and other areas of the Parish. Your efforts to keep the place tidy and litter free are greatly appreciated.

Since we have returned from the Easter break the whole school have been learning about the Earth, pollution and the impacts we are all having on the planet. Earth Week saw all our students learning together, engaging in a number of different activities across the school, uncovering the impact pollution is having on our planet, and the different ways in which we can help the environment. Raising awareness through picture stories, scavenger hunts and plant growing were just a few ways in which the children engaged in such an important topic. Year 6 took the lead throughout the week, with one member of our media club describing her findings as ‘fascinating, but frightening’. Other members of the team highlighted how some of the knowledge they had obtained about our land and oceans made them angry, but sad at the same time. Such importantly, powerful lessons were learnt throughout the whole of Misson Primary School’s Earth week, but all the while having fun and working together as one big school community.

Forest School in Founda on The children in Founda on have been having a fantas c me ‘down in the woods’ this half term. Forest school days were introduced into our Founda on stage provision during the Spring term and the children and staff have thoroughly enjoyed every visit. The children have had the opportunity to make their own dens, use their phonics and maths skills outdoors, create mud sculptures and help Mrs Atkinson with her fire pit. The fire pit has been a highlight and the children have made some yummy campfire food for our daily snack me. These have included pizzas, banana boats and popcorn! As well as allowing the children to explore their immediate environment and find out more about nature, it also supports the children to develop many other important skills, such as empathy for the environment and others, teamwork and confidence. It has also been found to have a posi ve impact on wellbeing, which has been an important factor of considera on during the pandemic.
What are APSA funding this month? This month, as well as the Magic Show, we have approved a request from Founda on for more resources to support Forest School which we know the children will love. Mrs Lindley in the office also requested some Tooth Fairy envelopes, to hold those precious lost teeth whilst at school and also some Kindness S ckers. We thought this was a lovely idea and we are looking forward to seeing our children proudly showing off their kindness s ckers. We s ll have available funds to help towards resources and events for our children. If you have any ideas of how you think the money should be used, please feel free to get in touch.
