Welcome to the March

Issue of the A Zebra crossing… In Branton? Really? Yes folks, it looks like we will all be able to cross Doncaster Road safely in the not so distance future. This crossing does not replace our much needed crossing patrol and will make the Village of Branton a safer place for young and old. Location has not yet been confirmed but funding has been agreed through 106 monies raised from the David Wilson Development in Branton. Cantley with Branton Parish Council along with residents and local Ward Councillors, have worked hard at proving the case for this project. The crossing is not DMBC funded. Fitness certainly seems to be in the air! Well done to the Extended Branton Posse who will now be half way through their running challenge with DAC!! Kate Chorlton, Amanda Cutts, Louise Taylor, Sandra Houghton (My Mam), Pauline Green, Erica Oliver and everyone else who is taking part in this 0 to 5K challenge in 9 weeks. For those of you completely uninterested in running, local Auckley resident, Caroline Barrass is organising a Netball team for young and old at Hayfield School so check out her information on the news page! Deadline for the April issue is Wednesday 18th March. The April Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in March.

Best Wishes

Michelle Sidebottom

School News From Auckley Academy

T-REXHIBITION

As the latest half term concluded here at the Auckley School, our Year 1 class invited their parents, grandparents and other family members to an exciting showcase of their class work this term. Looking like something out of a certain Steven Spielberg epic (no prizes for guessing which one!), the hall was bursting with a plethora of Jurassic paraphernalia. Those invited to the ‘Dino’ exhibition were also encouraged to sample some of the scrummy biscuits baked by the class. A great time was certainly had by all as everyone walked away from exhibition with a huge smile on their face; none more so than the children themselves who’s work was the centrepiece of the exhibition. Although the class were extremely proud of their achievement on what was a ‘Triffic’ afternoon, most were sad to leave their dinosaur topic behind.

Heart-felt Fundraising at the Auckley School

The children and staff at the Auckley School were in a charitable mood as they wore red in order to raise money for The British Heart Foundation. Old red tights, tutus and other clothing garments banished to the back of the wardrobe that we always said, ‘Would come in useful one day’ were dug out by staff and pupils alike. This is yet another charitable venture by the Auckley School. The pupils certainly seized the opportunity to dress in a different colour to their usual blue uniform as the school appeared to be swarming with a sea of red. This is certainly evident within the image below which was taken during our full school assembly.

Auckley School on Song

An assortment of Auckley School pupils from a range of different year groups travelled to Sheffield this term in order to take part in the country wide singing phenomenon, ‘Young Voices’. The children performed to a capacity audience at the Motorpoint Arena, filled with both friends and family of those taking part. The school choir which travelled to Sheffield have been working extremely hard for a number of weeks. Their hard work and dedication definitely paid off as they did themselves, teachers and their families proud with a truly exceptional display of talent and professionalism. A notable performance by X Factor contestant Lucy Spraggan was also a real treat for those taking part.

Branton St Wilfrids School News

Dodge Ball On 27th January ten members of St Wilfrid’s Year 3 and 4 Dodgeball Club attended their first tournament kindly hosted by Kingfisher School. There were 5 schools in the tournament: St Wilfrid’s, Kingfisher, Bessacarr, Willow and Hatchell Wood. Our squad of ten were divided into 2 teams and each team played in their own league. The winners of each league were then expected to play each other to see who would be taking home the trophy. At the end of the league matches, St Wilfrid’s had one team who were undefeated, and so we were certain to have one team in the final, but we were elated when it was announced that the other team were also victors of their league! Time was running short so it was decided not to play the final as St Wilfrid’s were bringing home the trophy anyway! All our children received medals. Well done to: Billy, Kai, Eddie, Harry F, Isabella, Alfie, Poppy, Charlie D, Piper and Henry. The children, as ever, were a credit to the school, behaving well and in a sporting manner. Thank you to parents who transported and supported. Thank you to Mr Cullen of Fit2Play Sports Coaching for organising the event.

Young voices! On Friday the 23rd January 2015 class6 Jubilate went to the annual Young Voices at Sheffield Arena, as we do every year. We all go in the afternoon and practice very hard. However for the 2 months before we practise and practise at home and at school (very hard I might add!) Everyone, every year enjoys the whole experience of practising and singing all night was ABSOLOUTLEY AMAZING. Every year a famous singer/band comes to do a performance plus we join in; this year the famous singer was Lucy Spraggen (the girl with the guitar from the X factor) and we sang Unsinkable from her new album. Also a band came from Liverpool called Mclarry sang for us! As always the same dance group called Urban Stridz came and did a mind blowing dance! We also did a short dance routine with them! Finally we did a song with a guy with a sparkly suit jacket!!!!!! I speak for everyone by saying we had an amazing time and we will always remember it!!!!

LPPA - We are currently working towards a Leading Parent Partnership Award which is presented to schools who have evidence of being committed to investing in parents for the achievement of children. If you would like more information regarding this project, please contact Janice Tyas at Branton St Wilfrids School. Parents and carers who have children in school will be invited to a presentation to explain this award in more detail before Easter.

March 2015 Newsletter 2015/16 Annual Precept After careful consideration the parish council determined that the annual precept for 2015/16 should be increased in order to complete the conversion of the Changing Rooms Building to a Meeting Room. The total revenue that will be raised will increase by nearly 5% giving a total income of £30,005, however due to an increase in the number of council tax payers the average increase to householders will be less than 2%. Annual Parish Meeting Date The Annual Parish Meeting which is a meeting for all electors within the parish will be held on Wednesday 4 March 2015 at 7.00pm. The March parish council meeting will follow the Parish Meeting. Parish Council Elections The term of office of all members of the parish council will end in May this year and elections for new councillors will take place on 7 May 2015. Christmas Carol Singing Thank you to all the residents who again attended the very enjoyable Christmas Carol Singing event at Kilham Hall on Wednesday 12 December. A special thank you to Mr Littlewood for again volunteering to play the organ, St Wilfrid’s School for arranging the attendance of the Jubilate Choir and to Father Christmas for his visit. The proceeds of the raffle were again donated to the Harry Matthews Bowel Transplant Fund. The Parish Council would like to wish everyone a very happy Easter.

NEWS FROM ST OSWALDS

St Oswald’s celebrated Christmas with a huge amount of enthusiasm as usual. The new reception children joined years 1 and 2 to recreate the nativity for all their parents and carers as well as for the rest of the school. Parents proudly watched their children sing and act out the celebration of Jesus’s birth. Jack Walker from YR1 help things along as a fantastic Wise Man. Whilst the parents of the older children of Key stage 2 celebrated in the church of St Oswald’s with carols and the nativity done in their own unique style. The Christmas fair was again a huge success with the school and The Friends Of St Oswald’s Fundraisers collaborating to produce a fantastic afternoon of shopping, eating cake, playing games and winning prizes. The fundraisers hosted the popular tombola, name the bear who’s winning name was Roger and the very yummy cake stall with cakes and buns kindly donated by the children and their parents All together the fair raised over a thousand pound to go towards school trips and equipment for the children. Our fantastic Lollipop Lady Mrs Anderson was called up on to judge the children’s Christmas competition, run by the St Oswald Fundraisers. The children where asked to produce a Christmas figure using a cardboard cone. The children produced some wonderful results in the shape of Angels, Santa’s, Snowmen and Reindeers. Mrs Anderson then awarded prizes to a winning child in each class, but all the entrants got a treat for their efforts, so WELL DONE everyone

2015 was kicked off very energetically by the boys and girls in years 5 and 6 when they competed in a schools athletic challenge at The Hayfield high school. The girls showed their excellent athletic ability by winning their races and going on to perform again with the boys at Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield, where they were not so lucky but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The older students of St Oswalds did the school proud when they sang at this years Young Voices concert at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield in January. Practice had been going on for months and they performed brilliantly in front of thousands of people including their excited parents. Mrs Williams who helped coached the children said she was very, very proud of her singers and hopes to perform with them next year .

There will be no 4pm service on the lst Sunday of the month. Instead there will be an 11 am All Age Communion Service. On the 5th Sunday of the month there will be an 11 am Holy Communion Service (BCP)
