Welcome to the March issue of

Branton & Auckley Arrow Spring is in the air and after listening to Boris’s latest statement, I am feeling really positive. This month’s Arrow reminds me of all the reasons I love living where I do. Although I have focused on the amazing gestures and treats provided by local residents in Branton, I know such events are happening in all of our villages in so many different ways. Our community remains stronger than ever and I can’t wait to see the Arrow full of local events and things to look forward to once again. The deadline for the April issue is Wednesday 17th March. The April issue will be distributed the last weekend in March. Michelle Sidebottom

Community News Would you like to help clean up your village? It was great to see so many of you taking up this challenge to clean our streets. Hopefully, such group activities will be able to resume soon. However, in the meantime, if you and your household would like to do some covid friendly exercise, we still have equipment you can borrow so you can do your own bit of litter picking. It is surprisingly enjoyable and the results are for the benefit of us all. If this is something you would like to do please email michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk for more details on how to collect your litter pick and bags. It is important to note that Covid restrictions apply and Cantley with Branton Parish Council are not responsible for your group or activity.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PICK UP YOUR DOG’S MESS It is never pleasant to come across dog mess on our foot paths and in parks. Please remember to take poo bags with you when you walk your dog. There are litter bins provided throughout all the villages where dog mess can be disposed of. At a time when walking is one of the few things we have to look forward to, please help to make it a nicer, safer experience for all and think about young children and the elderly in particular.

Thank you

Covid Memorial at Kilham Park, Branton Cantley with Branton Parish Council would like to provide some remembrance of 2020/21 at Kilham park. This is still in the early planning stages but they would like, with the support of Branton St Wilfrid’s school, for all children who have painted stones over this period starting back in March, to either drop their stones off at school (contact the school office for details) or leave them in a container that will be provided in January within the garden of Kilham Hall next to the salt container. The parish council would like to form a permanent snake with the stones in one of the external walls of the extension to the hall. They will do their very best to use everyone's creations if this plan can go ahead and would love your support and ideas.

If anyone has any questions, please contact the clerk cwbpc@outlook.com

WE NEED YOU!!! It is fantastic news that we have commenced the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccination programme in Primary Care across Doncaster. As this is the largest vaccination programme ever embarked on in Doncaster we are asking for as much support as possible, from volunteers, to support marshalling the five vaccination sites across Doncaster. There will be an ongoing demand for support throughout the vaccination rollout.

The marshalling support will involve the following duties; Greeting and directing those people being vaccinated to the correct place within the venue Taking temperatures/asking questions re symptoms Informing attendees about COVID safety measures Maintaining flow and social distancing Observing people for 15 minutes post vaccination Support to anyone requiring additional assistance eg mobility issues Provide general support to staff working at the site Maintain confidentiality at all times Keep good time keeping and show regular commitment As a Vaccination Marshal Volunteer you will not be asked to provide medical assistance/advice or personal care to patients The role will be an active one and volunteers will need to be mobile/on their feet for the duration of the session. This role is open to those aged 16 and over. The rotas are subject to change according to the availability of the vaccine and this can be at short notice. Typically a session will be from 8am to 1pm and 1pm to 6pm daily. Volunteers will be required to attend a briefing on arrival at site and therefore arrive 15 minutes prior to the session start time. It may also be necessary to stay on-site for a debrief/handover at the end of each session.

Anyone who is able to help out should, complete the short form on our website and we will be in touch with further details and to facilitate your placement on the rota. Please send any queries to volunteering@voluntaryactiondoncaster.org.uk

BRANTON’S

GOT TALENT!

Branton resident, Abi loved her find :)

If you go down to the woods today You’re sure of a big surprise.. No teddy bears picnic to be found (yet) however, wow, the wood behind Branton St Wilfrids school is full of delightful surprises that will be sure to make you smile. It is unknown at the moment who is behind this wonderful idea but I think I can safely say on behalf of everyone who walks the woods, a great big thank you. Such heart warming stuff and there's more! Decorated stones continue to be hidden as treasure for you to find and re hide when out and about. The latest surprise was a beautifully crochet woodland scene which fits perfectly on the post box on Doncaster Road in Branton. The master behind this creation has been discovered as it was stolen and found on a neighbouring villages post box, we may find an ongoing saga pursues as this work of art finds it way around all the villages! It has made so many people smile, Branton resident Louise Taylor has always been able to crochet having been taught by her grandmother at the age of six, but didn’t start the more complicated craft of crochet amigurumi until the beginning of lockdown. This creation took over two weeks to make, thank you Louise for making our day.

BECOME A PARISH COUNCILLOR With local elections planned for May this year, here is a taster of what parish council’s can do and what you can do as a parish councillor to help improve your local community. What is a Parish Council? A local council is a universal term for community, neighbourhood, parish and town councils. They are the first tier of local government and are statutory bodies. They serve electorates and are independently elected and raise their own precept (a form of council tax). There are 10,000 local councils in England with over 30% of the country parished and 100,000 councillors who serve in these local councils, with over £1b being invested into these communities every year. Local councils work towards improving community well-being and providing better services. Their activities fall into three main categories:  representing the local community;  delivering services to meet local needs;  striving to improve quality of life and community well-being. Through an extensive range of discretionary powers local councils provide and maintain a variety of important and visible local services including allotments, bridleways, burial grounds, bus shelters, car parks, commons and open spaces, community transport schemes, community safety and crime reduction measures, events and festivals, footpaths, leisure and sports facilities, litter bins, public toilets, planning, street cleaning and lighting, tourism activities, traffic calming measures, village greens and youth projects.

What do local councils and Parish Councillors do? Local (parish and town) councils and councillors make a massive difference to the quality of life of local people. They are passionate about their communities and seek to make a change to help improve the lives of their residents.

Parish councillors are elected to represent the local community, so you must either live or work within 3 miles of the parish boundary. Becoming a councillor is a rewarding experience as you will be in a position to make a change in your community to help improve the lives of residents, the role is unpaid and there is an expectation that you attend all parish council meetings (normally one per month). The term of service is 4 years. A councillor’s role can include responsibilities such as developing strategies and plans for the area, helping with problems and ideas, representing the community, working with other local community groups, decision making and reviewing decisions and talking to the community about their needs and about what the council is doing. Councillors comment on proposals to ensure the best outcome and vote to enable the Council to make decisions. Individual Parish Councillors cannot make decisions on behalf of the Council, but they can actively lead and engage with local projects. Parish Councillors have no powers outside of the Council meeting.

How to find out more about becoming a parish councillor? Checkout your parish council website for details on how to apply to become a parish councillor. DMBC will also provide details. You can find more information on being a parish councillor on the website below. www.electoralcommission.org.uk/i-ama/candidate-or-agent/parish-councilelections-england

Thank you Julia Cantley with Branton Parish Council say goodbye to their clerk, Julia Staniforth this month. Julia has been employed by the parish council since July 2007. I have been a member of the PC since 2006 so have known Julia throughout her service. I am coming to the end of my 4 year term as Chairperson and without Julia’s support, would have found the role incredibly difficult. Julia is hard working, conscientious, passionate about the local community and incredibly knowledgeable regarding parish council legislation. Julia has assisted the parish council with projects which range from the building of Kilham Hall, the development of the park and the ongoing work for a storage extension to the hall and multi use games area. Julia was also involved in the implementation of a zebra crossing on Doncaster Road and many, many smaller projects which help to maintain and improve our parish. Members of the parish council will be sad to see Julia leave. We wish Julia all the very best for the future and a very happy retirement. Thank you for your commitment to Cantley with Branton Parish Council. CCTV COMMUNITY PROJECT The local parish councils, including Cantley with Branton, Auckley, Blaxton and Finningley have been approached by an Auckley resident with the idea of installing CCTV at critical locations in and out of each village. Cantley with Branton Parish Council were approached in January and all members agreed in principle, that the installation of cameras was a good idea. The PC agreed to investigate further and currently await a meeting which is being organised by Ward Councillor, Steve Cox and will be attended by DMBC, the supplier of the cameras and a representative from SY police. The PC is keen to understand the total cost of the project, including maintenance, most suitable locations and the effectiveness of the cameras. The outcome of the meeting will be discussed at the following PC meeting.

As a school we have always been proud of our strong school community relationships and the bond we hold with our families, but we feel we now want to celebrate this more than ever. As well as schools across the country, Misson Primary School and staff were ready for blended learning and supporting our children on their academic and emotional journey both in school and at home, but we never anticipated we would be placed in yet another national lockdown. It has certainly been a steep learning curve for everyone, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed as to how hard it is for parents, students and school staff alike. By pulling together, listening and working alongside one another, we feel we have got our new routine ‘just right’. Whether this is taking part in daily zoom meetings, online lessons, being guided through the learning packs or individual messaging between teachers and parents, we feel our unique relationships are flourishing, whether your child has been learning in school or at home. It certainly lifted the staff’s spirits this week when they hand delivered additional learning resources to every child, travelling as far as Branton, Blaxton and Tickhill. Seeing all their smiling faces, energetic waves and the tales of lockdown so far really made the staff’s day. By providing this extra support it just reinforces the mutual respect we have forged with our parents and carers. All our school staff can’t express how much we appreciate our families’ home schooling efforts, going that extra mile for the children, while juggling their own workloads and home life, but still finding time to send in words of support and encouragement for us too. By pulling together in our united approach and unique learning platforms, our Misson Primary School children are still learning while in the safety of their own home. Together we can do this. ‘’Everything you are doing is so greatly appreciated’’ - Mum of 2 ….year 4 & year 2 ‘’ It’s hard but I think you have got it just right – thank you’’ – Parent of a year 6 “Thank you for all you are doing to keep our little ones occupied and continuing learning under these very difficult times” – Parent of a Reception Child

DONCASTER RAMBLERS Doncaster City Tour I’m not a native Doncastrian, not even an adopted one, even though I’ve walked hundreds of miles of local footpaths from Fishlake to Finningley and Tickhill to Toll Bar. What I’ve not done is visited Doncaster Town Centre. So today I put that right, and what an adventure it was. At just under four miles and with most streets deserted I was able to take in the buildings and shop fronts in complete leisure.

 I began on Roman Road and took a gentle stroll around Elmfield Park, although there was a lot of construction work going on, before heading south towards Carr House Road (A18)  A sharp right took me along Chequer Road for 640m passing two churches and Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery before reaching Waterdale  Turning left on Waterdale I found the Council Building and next door Cast Theatre with the Central Library opposite.  Shortly before reaching the end of Waterdale I made a right turn into Collage Road but not before admiring the dome of the nearby Sikh Temple  Another right into Cleveland Street then at the roundabout left into Printing Office Street to view the facade of the Priory Methodist Church  Retracing a couple of steps I headed into Priory Place towards High Street turning right at the Tourist Information Centre to face the magnificent Mansion House.  Retreating north west along High Street towards Frenchgate I made my way right on Baxtergate then left onto Saint George Gate.  Crossing the busy Church Way (A630) ahead of me Doncaster Minster.  After a walk around the Minster I made my way back along Market Place with its handful of stalls before swinging left then right onto Sunny Bar and further to Nether Hall Road  At the corner of Broxholme Lane another church came into view as I turned right heading down towards Thorne Road  On Thorne Road I made a further right turn to walk along side Doncaster Christ Church Churchyard.  Finally at Hall Gate I turned left to reach South Parade with its war memorial then onwards back to Roman Road.  Thoroughly enjoyable that, shame everything was closed.
