Welcome to the May issue of the Branton & Auckley Arrow I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break, I am hoping we can say that Winter is definitely over and we are now looking forward to some lovely warmer weather. There is lots going on this month and a few cries for help locally. The Auckley show is looking for volunteers this year, so if you want to get involved in the community and meet some new people, this would be a very good start. All the details are in this months Arrow. The Arrow has a feature on Young Scarlett from Finningley who has recently been diagnosed with the rare bone disease, Ewing’s Sarcoma. Scarlett’s parents are trying to raise funds so they can afford the expensive trip to America for essential proton treatment. The NHS will fund Scarlett's treatment but not the accommodation and travel costs of her parents and siblings. Please read more about Scarlett and how you can help in this month’s Arrow. I am looking for a new delivery person for Finningley, please contact me if you know someone who is interested, they must be 14 or over unless accompanied by an adult.

The deadline for the June issue is Wednesday 18th May. The June Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in May.

Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom

Community News Kilham Hall News

Kilham Hall News Tuesday Coffee Club enjoyed its Easter celebration on the 22nd March. Thank you to all those members who decorated eggs for the Easter Competition which was judged, with great difficulty, by Councillor Yvonne Woodcock. All entrants received an Easter Egg and everyone enjoyed Hot Cross buns with their morning refreshments. Coffee Club's annual outing will take place on Tuesday 17th May and a Buckleys coach will be taking us, once again, to the Millstones near Harrogate where we shall be enjoying entertainment and a lovely lunch. The Hall continues to be a popular venue for private weekend functions and there is a full timetable of weekday activities. Coffee Club is especially popular and all are welcome on a Tuesday morning! Best wishes Kilham Hall committee đ&#x;˜€

Community News After introducing Linda Carlo, from Auckley last month, she is making great progress in her challenge to swim 250 miles at Armthorpe Leisure Centre. Her chosen charity is the Hearing Fund UK and she aims to raise at least ÂŁ2,500 which will help deaf children and their families. The Hearing Fund UK is related directly to the famous singing Osmond family, to which Linda has had many previous connections. Linda recently spent a day with Merrill Osmond, and his deaf son Justin. Her 250 mile swim will end during the first week of August where the Osmonds have promised to be there for her final mile. In fact Justin is planning to swim that mile with her! The Osmonds are coming to Armthorpe! If you would like offer Linda sponsorship, please visit her Just Giving page at

Branton St Wilfrid’s C of E Primary School News If you go down to the woods today you will find….. Class R doing a minibeast hunt! We had a great time finding a range of creepy crawlies on our trip to Sandall Beat Woods. Class 3 launched their new topic with a visit to Doncaster museum. They did a workshop called “We Dig The Stone Age” where they used archaeological techniques. Year 4 loved the topic of ‘Raiders and Traders’. We invited adults into school to watch our Talk4writing presentation of Beowulf and hear examples of our work, whilst eating a Viking Feast. We have now started our new topic ‘The Blue Abyss’ and will shortly be going to The Deep to study The Great Barrier Reef and water conservation, and learn all about food chains and marine exploration.

Class 5 are thoroughly enjoying their new topic of allotments! We kicked things off by visiting Auckley allotments, where pupils got to do some observational drawings and to plan seeds and blubs. We have also been gardening in school, planting crops to be harvested later in the term.

Class 6 are enjoying their new topic, ‘Hola Mexico!’ where they have started to learn about Mexican festivals and how they are celebrated. In particular, the children have started to design their own ‘Dia de los Muertos’ 3D mask. They have also been very busy reading their class novel ‘Holes’ which has resulted with some great diary writing as the protagonist, Stanley. Class 2 have just started their new topic, ‘The Scented Garden’, which we are really enjoying. We had a fantastic trip to Walkers Nurseries where we went on a flower hunt and found out all about how to look after and take care of different plants. We have also written an information text about different flowers that we might find growing in our garden.Class 1 have just started their new topic ‘paws, claws and whiskers’. We are thinking about all sorts of animals, starting with pet,s so we have our very own pet goldfish in class called Oscar and Bernie. We are enjoying finding out about how to look after and care for them.

These two lovely boys are Lenni and Diesel, who are 5 & 6. Unbelievably these adorable cats were brought to us as their owner moved house and left them behind. They are both affectionate, friendly cats who will make great family pets. Lenni (black) is the quieter one and Diesel is more adventurous! As they have been through so much, we would love to re-home them together. They are both neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you feel that you could offer these boys a lovely home together, please call Isle Rescue on 01427 728705.

Scarlett is an 8 year old Finningley resident who attends St Oswalds C of E Academy. She was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer, just before Christmas. Scarlett's life has undergone a dramatic change in a short space of time. Previously she was a lively, energetic youngster who enjoyed many activities with her friends, including roller skating and ice skating. She is now spending 2 out of 3 weeks in hospital. She has already endured a number of life changing hurdles, including losing her beautiful long hair. All fundraising efforts so far have been donated to The Little Princess Trust, a charity chosen by Scarlett and her family, who make wigs for other children in Scarlett's situation. On 14th May 2016, Scarlett will be on her way to Oklahoma, USA, to receive vital Proton Therapy to aid her treatment here in the UK. Even though the treatment in the USA is funded by the NHS, the personal cost to the family will be huge as Scarlett has a twin brother, Alex and a younger brother Will, therefore making the whole trip very costly. Throughout her treatment so far, Scarlett has maintained her humongous smile, wit and gorgeousness! She is an absolute star and a total credit to her parents and everyone who knows her. As friends, neighbours and community, we would like to make this life changing trip to Oklahoma a little bit easier.

St Oswald’s C of E Academy Time Travelling On Tuesday 8th March, our Y5 children, along with 350 children from schools across the Southwell Diocese, took part in a Time Travelling Day at Southwell Minster. The day started with all the children gathering in the Nave to be greeted by the Time Travelling Team and Bishop Stephen. After a short welcome and some great singing from the children, each group set off with their Pilgrim Leader to explore the Cathedral and the theme of Pilgrimage. As part of their ‘journey’, the children took part in six activities during the day. Our children enjoyed drama activities in the Bishop’s state apartments, made prayer bracelets, used torches to find animal carvings hidden in the choir stalls, attended ‘choir school’ to learn to sing as the Cathedral choristers do, sat at the High Altar to find out what happens during communion, and even tried on the Bishop’s special robes or ‘copes’. To bring the pilgrimage to a close, we all met again in the Nave to take part in the candle ceremony. Two children and an adult from each school received a candle as a reminder of their pilgrimage to Southwell Minster. It was an excellent day which our children thoroughly enjoyed, not least because of the ‘Pilgrim Leaders’ who were assigned to look after us for the day. Diana Ives from the Diocese, who organised the day, had some fantastic volunteers who were so welcoming, so enthusiastic and kind towards the children, and so knowledgeable about the Cathedral and its history. We look forward to making a return journey next year.

Doncaster Ramblers ‘Lost Ways’ Project The beauty of our countryside can often best be seen from our paths, tracks and meandering lanes. Many of these routes are of ancient origin, and many fell into disuse in the last century after the rise of the car and the metalling of principal routes. When the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, 2000, was passed by parliament an important part of the Act stated that old unrecorded ways should be extinguished to provide certainty to landowners, but 25 more years would be allowed for the legal record to be brought up to date. So, although those routes that are already formally recorded will retain their public rights, unrecorded ways will cease to exist in 2026. Hence we have just 10 years to make claims for any unrecorded routes and to make them into public rights of way. Doncaster Ramblers has recently established a committee - the Lost Ways committee specifically to investigate and, if appropriate, to make applications to convert ‘lost ways’ into public rights of way. To assist us in this work we are contacting all parish and town councils in DMBC to ask for assistance. We would particularly like a point of contact who knows the area well, so that this person can advise us about local lost ways and possibly help us.
