Branton Post Office moves premises. Branton Post Office (not the post box) was relocated from Doncaster Road to Ava Court on Monday 19th October 2015. The Post Office is now sited in the new Costcutter store and will offer the majority of services as were previously offered. Barbara and Mike Fussey who have run the Post Office for the last 10 years will be missed by many but will still live in the village of Branton. The old post office is being converted into a new home for Barbara and Mike. Barbara will continue to be an active member of the Kilham Hall Committee and Mike plans to retire disgracefully. They would like to thank all of their customers for their patronage over the last 10 years and their kind sentiments. On behalf of your many customers who are also readers of the Arrow, we thank you for your service and wish you both the very best of luck in the future. Michelle x

Auckley’s Grey Lady!
A little something to get you in the mood for Halloween… The name of the Grey Lady is unknown, but it is believed that she was the youngest daughter of a village man who never let her marry. As a result the lonely girl took solace in other peoples happiness and, after her death she made appearances at weddings and christenings for more than 300 years, usually as a grey apparition at the back of the room. As she was believed to pose no threat, the villagers soon adopted her and it became customary to set a place for her at the table. A special toast was made for her.
The Toast We wish thee joy on this our celebration Come sit thee down and take a glass of wine And if you sup in our felicitation The hour is blest as blessed you may be So people of Auckley let us invite her to our celebrations and lay a place for her with a glass of wine. Happy Halloween everyone! John Foster

A Life Changed Through a Life Shared Denis and Linda Birkin from Conisbrough are Carers supporting a young man named Ben, who is on the autistic spectrum, through the provision of a pioneering service called Shared Lives. The couple, who also have children of their own, have looked after Ben within their home since he was a baby – providing foster care up to the age of 18, following which they wanted to ensure Ben could remain in the family environment they had created for him. To do this Denis and Linda became Shared Lives Carers, under a scheme delivered by Doncaster charity The Avalon Group. Shared Lives offers adults with a wide range of disabilities and mental health issues the chance to become part of an extended family by living in the home of a trained carer. For those participating in the scheme this can be either on a long or short term basis, with options for day breaks and respite relief. For Ben it means the ability to live a fulfilled life surrounded by all the things he loves and all the things he needs. Even the detached bungalow in which the family lives, was purchased to allow Ben to play music and sing as loud as he likes! He is also a valued, active member of the community, playing drums and singing at his local church alongside Denis who plays trumpet and Linda who plays guitar, and has a great passion for baking and art. This is made possible by a life lived alongside people who care for him in the same way any family would. Denis and Linda have provided a home and a level of support that means he has flourished in ways which a residential care setting may not have been able to achieve. The Birkins were recognised for their level of care at the Pride of Doncaster Awards 2014, receiving the ‘Carers of the Year’ trophy. Linda said: "The only way support can be this good, is for it to happen in a family setting, within a strong family unit.” Denis added “It’s so rewarding to do what we’re doing with Ben. It’s got to be better than just building another residential home and hoping for results. ‘The Avalon Group have been a really great help to us, delivering excellent quality training with commitment and dedication. Shared Lives really has to be the way forward." The Avalon Group are currently looking to recruit new Shared Lives Carers throughout Doncaster and the surrounding areas. If you would like to find out more, or apply to become a Carer please contact Alison on 01302 910 191, or visit www.avalongroup.org.uk for more information.

HAYFIELD LANE PRIMARY BELIEVE AND ACHIEVE Well what a busy start we have had to the year. So busy that we missed last month’s edition of The Arrow ! We have a new Reception Class called the Wrens and alongside our other Reception Class (Sparrows) new children have settled in beautifully. It has been wonderful to welcome so many new families. We started off the year with a super party to celebrate the Queen becoming the longest reigning British monarch and enjoyed delicious party food and learning about what it really means to be British. We continue to welcome other schools from Yorkshire and Humberside to support their teaching of Singapore Maths Mastery and literacy initiatives . I am proud to tell you that our Deputy Head, Mrs John Lewis, is now a NATIONAL LEADER in this area. Our children across school are certainly benefitting. We have been working hard to support local charities recently as part of our drive to be good citizens. So far we have raised £1100 for the NSPCC, £129 from a Macmillan Coffee Morning with Grace Church, £167 for Roald Dahl Nurses for terminally ill children, and £200 for Project Paddington which helps child refugees in Syria . It is amazing to think that as a small school we have made such a difference and had GREAT FUN at the same time. Our children have enjoyed some wonderful events– Queen’s Party,Paddington Movie Night with hotdogs and popcorn, Year 1 Gruffalo Yoga, Nursery Balance Bike session, European Day of Languages and Year 6 at the Doncaster Book Awards meeting David Baddiel, We also welcomed our new school pets-3 guinea pigs called Coco, Fudge and Pudding. We are currently looking forward to our Halloween Disco, carved pumpkin competition and Harvest Festival. After half term we will be creating another artistic masterpiece (based on the Vulcan) with local artist Peter Baldry, enjoying Bollywood Dance workshops as part of Diwali, an Owl Experience as part of Early Years’ Novel Study on Owl Babies and much, much more! And that doesn't include all the fun of Christmas. We hope that you enjoy finding out about what we have been doing and I wish you all a lovely, autumnal half term break. Kind Regards, Mrs Tempest, Headteacher.

IT’S BEE-AUTIFUL! During the summer break we had the ENTIRE SCHOOL REDECORATED. We are really pleased with the outcome as it provides a wonderfully bright and stimulating environment that is child friendly. Many visitors have commented how wonderful it looks. We also redecorated the school bungalow which is now the home of EARLY BIRDS BREAKFAST CLUB (£2) and BUSY BEES WRAP AROUND CARE (only £4 for 3:30-5:30). Speak to the office for additional information.
We loved celebrating BEING BRITISH.
EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES In our collective worship this term we
have been looking at how diverse our society is. As part of this we celebrated European day of Languages where children enjoyed learning different languages, sampling different foods, looking at different customs and much
more. Year 3 did a great job of creating the
French Menus for the dinner hall. OUR HIGH FLYING CHILDREN
You may be aware that last year as a school we made a significant investment of time and money in the teaching of phonics (sounds made in words) and our Early Years provision so that our children could access the best quality education. See photos of our Nursery /Reception classes on the school website. They’re AMAZING! I am extremely proud to inform you all that the National Phonics Screening test scores show the school nearly doubled its pass rate as it soared above the National rate by achieving an outstanding 83.3% . The only children who did not pass were either new to the school or have specific literacy needs, which we continue to support. We also saw our Early Years results going from strength to strength, being higher than the national figures and our junior children achieving results placing them in the top 20% of schools nationally, compared to similar schools. Branton St Wilfrids School News I can not quite believe we are at the end of the first half term already. We have had such a busy few weeks. I would like to say a big Thank You to everyone who attended our MacMillan Coffee Morning, we raised a staggering £428.27. In addition to this, a group of year 6 pupils organised a bun sale. The girls spent hours of their time making beautiful cakes. They managed to raise an amazing £124.41 for Cancer ResearchWell done girls!. On the 5th October we celebrated Harvest Festival. The children performed a beautiful service. The donations of produce was vast and colourful. We raised £325.31 for Christian Aid and the rest of the produce was greatly received by the M25 housing and support group. All the children have completed the “Develop and Innovate ” stage of their topic and are moving towards the final stage “Express”.
Reception The children in Reception have made a great start to their first year at school. Our topic this half term is ‘Do you want to be my friend?’ and the children have been learning all about friendship. During the engage stage of our topic, the children went on a walk around the school meeting all the people who help us. Since then we have been learning to tell a range of stories about friendship such as ‘Lost and Found’ and ‘Elmer’. The children have enjoyed making their own elephant model and masks. We even had an ‘Elmer Day’ where the children tried ‘elephant coloured berries’ and went on an elephant parade! We are now preparing for our express event next week where parents will be coming into school for a teddy bear’s picnic.
Year 1 After finding a large dinosaur egg, this half term year 1 have been learning all about dinosaurs. We started off our topic with a fantastic trip to Manchester Museum where we met a very large and scary Tyrannosaurus Rex called Stan. We have been around the school collecting lots of natural items to make our very own Jurassic landscapes, made herbivore and carnivore teeth, handled and drawn real fossils and learnt all about Mary Anning. We are currently very busy and excited as we are preparing for our express event, where year 1 will be opening and playing tour guides to their very own dinosaur museum for the day. Our museum will include models, fossils, fact files, paintings and of course there will be a dino café with biscuits and smoothies. The dinosaur topic has also really engaged children in literacy. Using talk for writing, they have written their own excellent stories about mischievous dinosaurs that are in places they shouldn’t be such as the supermarket, cinema, swimming pool and even school!

Year 2 Year two have had a busy half term learning all about towers, turrets and tunnels. Folowing our trip to Conisbrough castle, we have been investigating which materials make the strongest tower and what is the best way to build a bridge. During our Talk 4 Writing we have been creating our very own instructions about ‘How to Become a Knight’. Where we had lots of fun pretending to be knights. We are now very busy during our express stage where we are building a fortress for The Three Little Pigs. We have looked closely at what a fortress needs and spent time designing them, to make sure they are able to protect the Three Little Pigs from The Big Bad Wolf.
Year 3 We found out lots about the Greek gods in our project. We learned a description of Zeus in our Talk 4 Writing and the children wrote descriptions of other gods and goddesses. We made busts of Greek gods and goddesses out of Modroc. We painted each one and then gave them crowns, wreaths or headdresses to show who or what they were god or goddess of. There are lots of myths and quests in Greek stories. We found out about lots of them, including Jason and the Golden
Fleece, which was our text in Talk 4 Writing. The children are going to write their own Quest myths soon. The children used their maths skills, too, when looking at timelines. They said that BC dates are a bit like negative numbers! Pythagoras was a famous Greek mathematician who studied odd, even, square and triangular numbers as well as the properties of triangles. We investigated some of his maths ideas in class.

Year 4 The children in Year 4 have been learning all about The Battle of Hastings, and Norman life in 1066. The class have produced some fabulous homework as you can see from the photograph. We have had Norman soldiers, swords and shields, and recount texts and digital presentations. Recently Year 4 took part in an archery day where we all learnt about the weaponry used in the Battle, and learnt how to fire our own bow and arrow. We are currently putting together a model replica of a Motte and Bailey Castle, and will then show all our hard work off to family and friends in a Norman exhibition. Everybody has really enjoyed this first topic. What will we learn about next?
Year 5 The topic in year 5 this term is Ancient Egypt and the children have been learning all about the history, the Nile and even mummification. The class has been busy at home creating lots of Egyptian jewellery, making fact files, building pyramids and baking flatbread. Last week the children made nemes (Egyptian headdress), practiced our embalming skills on each other and made canopic jars. They are currently making a child sized sarcophagus that we will be using in our class play. The children will be writing their own play script to produce and preform based on the Egyptian story of Osiris. They are very excited to start writing this and have thoroughly enjoyed Ancient Egypt so far!
Year 6 During this half term, the children in year 6 have been finding out what life was like during WW2. As a result of their thorough research, they have been able to write letters and diaries (as an evacuee child) and some fantastic descriptions about the Blitz. Additionally, they have been developing their atlas skills while locating the cities which were heavily bombed during the Blitz and where the children were evacuated to. The children have thoroughly enjoyed designing and building Anderson Shelters, following an investigation into the strength of materials which could potentially protect them from bombs! To end the topic, they are busy preparing to celebrate the end of WW2 by having a street party and a short performance. In the final week, the children will be baking ‘rationed’ cookies and cakes to share on the day of the party. They have all been totally engaged with this first topic; it has been great to see the children bring artefacts and information into school from their own family who have experience of WW2. Auckley School News
Giving Thanks This year Auckley has celebrated Harvest time with an extravaganza of childdriven assemblies. Each year group paired up with another to perform a fantastic assembly to parents about all the brilliant things we give thanks for at Harvest time. Auckley would like to give a special mention and great thanks to Pauline Holmes and Jackie Miller for their brilliant efforts in creating a harvest festival display to be proud of. T-rrific Times for Year 1 As part of their dinosaur topic, year one were thrown into a Jurassic world with a visit from a dinosaur expert. The children were able to take part in a range of hands-on activities whereby they learned all about fossils, dinosaurs and the environment they lived in. Some fantastic art work was created using fossils as the children created their own and used them for making print images. ‘Deep’ Sea Exploration A great time was had by all when year two had the opportunity to visit ‘The Deep’ as part of their ‘under the sea’ topic! Not only did the children get to see all of the amazing sea creatures, they were also treated to a dive show and had their questions answered by a deep sea expert. The trip went swimmingly and they are going to put their new found knowledge to good use when writing their own information booklets!

Not Everything Can Be Measured Sometimes I come across something that makes me think, recently it was a quote form Einstein. He said, “Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.” In other words, not everything that can be counted or measured is important, however, not everything that is important can be counted or measured. I’m a governor in a local school and it seems to me that everything has to be measured because I’m often bombarded with statistics: figures for progress, figures for learning, figures for added value, figures for the budget, figures for SATS results, and so on and so on. I’m not saying this is necessarily all bad, but I do believe we must be careful not to lose sight of other things that are, in my view, just as important. There are aspects of our lives that simply can’t be measured - loyalty, friendship, courage and love for example. Hugely important, yet… Friendship can’t be counted. Loyalty can’t be marked in percentages. Commitment can’t be represented in a graph. Love cannot be physically measured.
Parish Church Service Times The pattern for worship at both churches is varied, ranging from traditional to contemporary. Our monthly pattern of worship is outlined below.
1st Sunday
9.15am: Finningley - Family Communion. 11.15am: Finningley - Baptisms by arrangement 11.00am: Auckley - All Age Communion
2nd Sunday
8.00am: Finningley - Traditional Holy Communion 9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club 11.00am: Auckley - Family Communion with Sunday Club
3rd Sunday 9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club 11.00am: Auckley - Family Communion with Sunday Club 4th Sunday
But they can all be demonstrated. The Bible tells 9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday us that we will be known by the fruit that we bear, Club fruit that will last, by the way we live under God’s 11.00am: Auckley - Family Communion with Sunday Club own love and care. “Love one another, as I have Noon: Auckley - Baptisms by arrangement loved you.’ Jesus tells us.
5th Sunday
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Battle 9.15am: Finningley - Either a Celtic or African style of Britain and a few years ago I was privileged to Holy Communion 11.00am: Auckley - Holy Communion (BCP) meet one of Churchill’s ‘few’ who had flown Spitfires. Those few, and indeed those men and women who have served in conflicts around the world, gave something so very valuable, yet it can’t be measured: Loyalty, friendship, courage and love. They are remembered for the fruit they bore, for the way they lived their lives. We may not face such circumstances in our own lives today, but we can still show by the way we live similar unmeasurable, yet important aspects - compassion, honesty, friendship, and of course love for one another. Blessings. Revd. Neil Redeyoff St Saviour's, Auckley & St Oswald's & Holy Trinity, Finningley
