Yes, that’s right, ten years this month since the Branton & Auckley Arrow landed on your doormat. We have changed a little from the first edition and I would be interested to know what you think of this months front cover design. In October 2005, my plan was to provide a magazine which helped to keep the local community informed of events that would help bring them together and share good news about life in our villages. The very first Arrow magazine was distributed to 2000 homes in Branton & Auckley, due to demand and housing, the Arrow now goes to 3500 homes in Branton, Auckley, Finningley and Blaxton and the villages continue to grow. The Branton & Auckley Arrow is now part of a network of Arrow magazines covering other villages in and around Doncaster and the community model is still and always will be at the heart of what we do. One of the key success factors of The Arrow is its distribution and this is down to many young local people in our villages who work hard every month making sure you get your copy on time. Thank you to you all, past and present. To celebrate 10 years, we are offering £50 off your next James Motor Company bill and a bottle of champagne. All you need to do is own a copy of the very first Arrow magazine. If there is more than one entry, we will hold a draw. There will be only one prize winner. If we can’t find a first copy, it will be the oldest copy we can find. Closing date is 19th October. Good luck and thank you again for your support. Deadline for the November issue is Wednesday 21st October. The November Arrow will be delivered the last weekend in October.

Community News Kilham Hall News Thank you to those of you who have expressed delight at the Hall's refurbishments. The larger space makes a huge, positive difference as does the wider serving hatch and the walls will have been painted by the time we are reading this edition of the Arrow. We will add some photographs to our article next month so you can see the difference. Due to the refurbishments, we now have two self contained meeting rooms available for hire. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Bev, our Booking Clerk on 07856 221470. The Hall has a reasonably full timetable of weekly activities but there are spaces available on Wednesdays/Thursdays/Fridays should any other activity groups be interested in booking a regular slot. Members of Branton community filled in a questionnaire in June 2014 upon which they suggested ideas for activities to run at the Hall and an exercise class for the 'older' members of the community was one idea mentioned. Certainly Exercise/Zumba groups are very popular and something along those lines aimed specifically at those with not quite so much energy and staying power for a full-on Zumba activity might be very welcome. If you are a Group Leader and maybe interested in running a Course or Class in Kilham Hall then please contact our Booking Clerk for further information on: 07856221470. Our annual Halloween Party resumes this year after a break last year and will be held on Saturday 31st October from 2—4.30pm. All children up to the age of 12 are welcome to attend. Fancy dress would be great and we have a ‘Best Carved Pumpkin’ competition in age category. So please don’t forget to bring your ready carved pumpkins! Tickets are £1.00 each and every child over the age of 2 must have a ticket so we can control the numbers. Tickets will be available from The Costcutter in Branton and the Branton Post Office until it closes. We ask that pushchairs are left outside the hall or in cars to leave as much space as possible for the party. So please take the weather into consideration. The 6th Annual General Meeting of Kilham Hall Committee will take place this year on Monday 2nd November in the new Meeting Rooms at Kilham Hall, starting at 6.30pm prompt. Members of the general public are welcome to attend. However, this will be followed by an Ordinary Meeting which is not open to the general public. Best Wishes, Kilham Hall Committee

Community News Auckley Show St Saviour's Sunday Club Stall Our day out at the Auckley Show was most enjoyable once again and we had great fun enticing young and old to our stall to play games and make badges and ice biscuits. We met lots of lovely children and grown ups, and were so busy that we ran out of goody bags, sweets and badge making equipment. Also we were pleased to give away loads of jigsaws. The two Co-op cake and biscuits raffle prizes raised over £60 and were both won by people who live locally with ticket numbers 787 and 792. There were no charges for any of the activities but we received many kind donations for our church funds. We will look forward to being there again at next year's show. Auckley School News Welcome back! The corridors of Auckley School have been filled with the chatter of children as we welcome them back after a well deserved rest over the summer holidays. We are lucky enough to not only be welcoming children into the school, but also new staff members who are excited to be working here at Auckley. With a new year beginning, we can't help but reminisce about the children who have left us for pastures new and we wish them all the best of luck in their new schools. Beast Creator

Year five have had a great start to the term with their exciting new topic, 'Beast Creator'. As an introduction to the topic the children experienced a ‘hands on’ showcase, where they learned all about mini-beasts and had the opportunity to handle them. A great afternoon was had by all involved and the children were left excited to get their teeth stuck in to their new topic! Holiday club Unfortunately, this facility is no longer viable for the school to provide and the decision has been made to cease the holiday provision with immediate effect. We would like to thank everyone who has used the holiday club during the years it has been open and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Hello from the Mayflower Sanctuary, we are still in the throes of building work, which seems to be going on forever, but i do think we can see a light at the end of the tunnel. We are all so grateful to Mr Grainger for leaving this money to us in order that we are now able to make much needed improvements to our site. We will be able to house more dogs in better facilities which is also wonderful for our kennel staff too. We have some beautiful dogs and cats in our Sanctuary all waiting for a home they can call their own. It is such a shame that some of our residents are overlooked for various reasons. Maybe they don't make the best of themselves in a kennel environment. But please be aware that once out of this environment most dogs and cats adjust really well and make wonderful pets. If you would like to be introduced to any of our residents please ask our kennel assistants and they will be happy to give you any information you require. Last months Arrow focused on our two 'joined at the hip' lovely dogs. Bruno and Roxey who have been with us for nearly a year. They have lived the whole of their life before that to-gether. Unfortunately they came to us as their owner was too ill to take care of them. They are still with us, if you feel you could give these two beautiful dogs a home, please call us and come along to meet them. We would like to thank many people recently that think of us when their loved ones pass away. Instead of sending flowers families are asking that mourners make donations to our charity. This is a very humbling thing to do, and we would like to thank families for thinking of us. The last donation we received was from a lovely lady in Tickhill whose husband recently passed away, she and her late husband are long standing supporters of our charity. This wonderful gesture was a very sizeable £ 232.00. Thank you again we are all very grateful. We have a Pampered Chef Party in the reception area at the Sanctuary on 8th October starting at 7.00 pm . Tickets are £2.00 and include tea, coffee, biscuits and food tasting. We will also be holding a raffle and tom bola. Please call the sanctuary and leave a message if you would like tickets. 01302711330. Please come along and join us, we hope this will be a very entertaining evening. If you are looking for that special pet please come along and see us, we will be happy to help.

Hi, we are Carl (owner / manager) & Alison (assistant manager) of The Deli Badger, Doncaster Road in Branton, which opened in August 2015. We have received massive local support since our opening, and we continue to be busier and busier each day, with our wine bar evenings each Friday & Saturday proving very popular (thank you!). The Deli Badger is a one-of-a kind independent business, with a core emphasis placed upon locally-sourced, best quality foods and ingredients. Our bread is made fresh daily at a Doncaster Artisan Bakery, and our pulled meats are prepared on-site within our 3 sous-vide water baths. Alison bakes all of our scones and cakes on site each day, and even our preserves and sauces are sourced from single bespoke suppliers in Sheffield. We prepare our espresso coffees using our retro Faema coffee machine, using a threebean blend of coffee roasted in Sheffield. And we have also recently introduced a pour-over filter coffee made using copper V60 drippers with coffee beans roasted at Robin Hoods Bay.

Our Deli theme is mainly derived from our menu and the types of foods that we prepare, and we provide our customers with the option to purchase our cheeses, meats, olives, oils, breads etc where ever possible.

Carl, Alison Natalie & Oscar

We aimed for an eclectic, rustic and industrial look, including reclaimed bricks from Epworth, and our Gabion cages fronting the long bar are filled with cobbles from Wroot quarry. We have used Kilner jars within our ambient lighting, and we also use them to serve our cordials & juices! It has been a tremendous opening month at the Deli, and we have already recruited new staff members from the village (Oscar, Matt & Natalie) to get us off the ground. Alison & I want to thank you all once again for your tremendous support and interest in our little Deli! Best regards, Carl, Alison & the Team.

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2015 Auckley Show 2015 The 2015 Show proved once again to be a great success with a large and varied number of stalls and activities to suit every age group. A tremendous amount of work goes into the planning and staging of this event, and members of the Show Committee are to be congratulated for their efforts.

Motorists Speeding on Hurst Lane Residents continue to complain that motorists are exceeding the speed limit on Hurst Lane, particularly outside the Hayfield Senior School, and the Police have been asked to monitor traffic speeds. Doncaster Council Highways Dept. plans to undertake both a site visit and traffic survey in order to gather evidence with regard to traffic flow and vehicle speeds which will help to determine future proposals for the highway at this location.

Advisory Reduction in Speed Limit Outside Hayfield Primary School Doncaster Council is proposing to introduce an advisory reduction in the speed limit from 30 mph to 20 mph on Hayfield Lane, outside the Hayfield Primary School, when pupils are starting and finishing their school day. The scheme will be in operation when flashing amber warning lights are illuminated.

Flooding in Auckley A recent flash flood resulted in some residents' gardens being flooded. Severn Trent was informed and steps were immediately taken to cleanse the pumps at the local pumping station, and the frequency of cleaning was increased. In addition, the site is to be set up as a 'Red Triangle Site' which will give early warning of any repeat flooding. Severn Trent also cleared a blocked highways surface water sewer on Main Street which had caused an internal flood at two properties, and this has been passed to DMBC for investigation.

Overhanging Tree and Hedges Increased temperatures during the Summer months encourages the rapid growth of vegetation, leading to some trees and hedges overhanging footpaths and creating an obstruction. It would be appreciated if residents with properties adjacent to footpaths could trim back any overhanging branches.

Pavilion Renovation The Parish Council is arranging for some renovation work to be carried out to the pavilion at Riverside Park.

Branton St Wilfrids School News

We have had a brilliant and busy start to the new school year. Our school councillors, photographed above, have been elected and have already brought about some changes. All the children have been taking part in the “Engage” stage of their topic. Reception went on a walk around the school to meet people who help us. They met the school cooks, the office staff and even Mrs Rushby! They asked questions of the people that we met such as “what is your job?” and “is it fun?” They explored all the rooms in the school and found out what they are used for. Each group of children shared what they had found out with the whole class.

Year 1 visited the Manchester Museum to meet Stan the Dinosaur. They spent the morning digging for fossils and being dinosaur detectives, solving clues to find the prehistoric creatures. Then the children got to meet Stan a real life size Tyranasaurus Rex a looked at the reptiles in the vivarium to compare them to what the dinosaurs were like. Year 2 went to Conisborough castle where they spent the morning exploring the different parts of the castle and what each room was used for. The children really enjoyed role playing people who used to live in the castle; the children played the parts of the Lords, the Cooks and the Peasants. When the children returned to school they investigated recreating the great keep of Conisbrough Castle, out of biscuits. The children were set the challenge as to who could build the tallest and strongest tower. Year 3 enjoyed their Greek Day delivered by the “Makers of History. They were visited by an Athenian lady and a Spartan warrior who both tried to persuade the children that their City State was the best! During the day the children wrote with quills and ink, made coins for their City State, played an Ancient Greek game, performed a dance to gods and took part in Greek drama. It was a fascinating insight into many aspects of Ancient Greek life and they children had a fantastic day.

Year 4 also visited Conisborigh castle but they learnt about how castles were used during medieval times and then staged a battle re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings. They visited different areas of the castle and made links to how the castle was used within the time period of 1066.

Year 5 visited Manchester Museum. To start the trip the pupils got to explore the Museum, enjoying all aspects. In the afternoon they all finally got to see a real mummy (Azru) and explore all the artefacts in the Egyptian section. After that the pupils were able to hold some artefact and learn what their uses were in the afterlife. We finished the day by building a pyramid in less than two minutes! While year 6 enjoyed been transported back in time to experience what life was like during World War 2 at Kelham Island. During the day the children experienced evacuation and the effect it had on everyone. Later in the day, children experienced what it would have been like in an air raid shelter. They finished the day with a good old sing song! I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all the staff for their hard work and dedication so far this year and thank you to all the parents and children for making me feel so welcome in my new role. Nina Rushby, Head Teacher

Stuff

After a good few months away

from my ‘normal’ work, I’m back, and as you know Louise has moved to her new post in Wakefield. On the day the removal company were packing away her stuff, Louise noticed she had my cape. No, I don’t leave a double life as Ant Man of Auckley or Flame of Finningley. This was a thick woollen cloak that we wear for any services we take outdoors when it’s wet and cold. Both cloaks differ quite significantly - my cape is woollen with a black lining, and Louise’s is cotton with a bright blue lining. I’m 6 foot 6, and Louise is much, much, shorter and so the size difference is considerable. If Louise was to put mine on it would be like donning Billy Smarts Big Top! However, in sorting out all of her stuff for the move, it was an easy mistake to make. It strikes me that we go though life collecting stuff. I remember when our first child was born and the amount of baby paraphernalia we accumulated. Going to Asda changed from quickly jumping in the car, to something that required 3 hours notice to enable us to get all the stuff together. Forget a day out, it needed a week to plan it! Interestingly, our eldest is now 22 and we still have all that baby stuff in the loft. Last month I turned 46, so just about time for a mid-life crisis. So, will it be a classic car, flying lessons, or a cheese factory? It won’t be any…although cheese factory, hmmm. The truth is, there isn’t anything I really want or need. Over my 46 years I’ve gained a fair amount of stuff, and I have a strong suspicion that I’m not on my own. I wonder how many of us actually have a garage that you can park a car in? Tell the truth, is the garage full of your stuff?

Parish Church Service Times The pattern for worship at both churches is varied, ranging from traditional to contemporary. Our monthly pattern of worship is outlined below.

1st Sunday

9.15am: Finningley
 - Family Communion. 11.15am: Finningley - Baptisms by arrangement 11.00am: Auckley
 - All Age Communion

2nd Sunday

8.00am: Finningley - Traditional Holy Communion 9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club
11.00am: Auckley - Family Communion with Sunday Club

3rd Sunday
9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club
11.00am: Auckley - Family Communion with Sunday Club

 4th Sunday

9.15am: Finningley - Holy Communion with Sunday Club
11.00am: Auckley - Family Communion with Sunday Club
 Noon: Auckley -
Baptisms by arrangement

5th Sunday

9.15am: Finningley - Either a Celtic or African I like technology and I’ve been buying a magazine called style Holy Communion
…. ‘Stuff’. This magazine is to me what Cath Kidston is 11.00am: Auckley -
Holy Communion (BCP) to my wife and daughter (other retro shops are available). I love this magazine. It’s full of shiny, new technology with buttons and lights. But, do I really need that BlueTooth speaker at £1800 or that football shaped 360 degree picture taking camera at £1200, or a gold iWatch at £8000? The honest answer is ‘no’, I don’t, and I haven’t bought any of them.

As we go through life we are tempted though, and we do pick up lots of stuff, but are we picking up the right stuff? Matthew tells us, “Some people store up treasures in their homes here on earth. This is a shortsighted practice— don’t undertake it. Moths and rust will eat up any treasure you may store here. Thieves may break into your homes and steal your precious trinkets. Instead, put up your treasures in heaven where moths do not attack, where rust does not corrode, and where thieves are barred at the door. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Good to be back. Blessings.
