Community News Kilham Hall News Now that the summer recesses are upon us, it is time to remind Tuesday Coffee Club members that Coffee Club reopens on Tuesday 2nd September and we hope to see all our usual friends and maybe some new Coffee Club recruits. Usual time: 10.00am - 11.30am; usual routine: Bingo, Christine's monologue, Quiz, Raffle and, of course, refreshments and conversation. Following the success of our coach trip to Castle Howard, with Fish & Chip lunch en route, we are looking into organising a Coffee Club Theatre Trip around Christmas and another Coffee club outing June 2015. Our autumn events at Coffee Club will also include our annual Pie & Pea lunch in November and our Christmas coffee morning in December. On Tuesday 23rd September, we shall be once again taking part in the Great McMillan Coffee Morning where we shall be raising funds for the McMillan nurses and all the proceeds from that morning will go to the McMillan Fund. Sunday 2nd November is the date for our annual children's Hallowe'en Party at the Hall and we are hoping to, once again, be entertained by Mr Dan. More details to follow in later editions of the Arrow. We should like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the many replies to the request for your opinions on proposals to extend and refurbish Kilham Hall. The Arrow published a Form in one of its recent editions and so many of you took the time to complete it and hand it in at our Post Office. All replies were positive with many suggestions for further activites you would like to see in the Hall so a huge THANK YOU.
Refurbishments will not be happening for a while yet but we have proposals in place and we know what you would like. Finally, a big THANK YOU for your support throughout the year. Most activities will be continuing throughout August, allowing for holidays taken by Group leaders, and the Hall's 'weekly activites' Timetable can be found in the window of Branton Post Office, in the back of each edition of the Arrow and on the Notice Board outside the Hall. Community News Finningley Church to Become a Bowling Alley
A near catering quality kitchen able to be the base for informal activities such as a community cafe and mothers & toddlers and formal activities ranging from healthy cooking/eating sessions to a lunch club for the elderly.
I suspect that the title grabbed your attention!
Wifi and computers supporting a wide range of learning courses such as computers for the elderly, managing on a budget etc.
Let me be very clear, St Oswald’s Finningley WILL NOT BECOME A BOWLING ALLEY! However, this is just one of the rumours I’ve picked up in recent weeks since we announced that we would like to make some changes to the building. So this month I thought I would pass on a little of what we are trying to achieve by making some changes and additions. It all began because the congregation was outgrowing the space available. It was a great problem to have, but as we looked for a solution we realised that we should also try and ensure that our lovely church served the community to the best of it’s ability. We are therefore poised to launch a once in a generation development of Finningley Church to both safeguard the building and re-configure the church to create high quality and fully accessible community space able to be used by the wider community. The Village Hall is an excellent centre for our community and is well used but it is sometimes difficult to access at peak times. We see it as a thriving community hub and want to complement the hall in our development not compete with it. There are some things we can’t do at the church through this development; we couldn’t replace a library or a village shop for example. It may not be the best venue for a youth club or large scale children’s play activities.
A sound system and stage that will enable the performance of theatre, music, pantomimes and a community cinema. It will take a while to get everything together, not least the funding. But we hope that Finningley Church can continue to serve the community as it does already, but with new and exciting initiatives too. Blessings.
Revd. Neil Redeyoff St Saviour's, Auckley & St Oswald's & Holy Trinity, Finningley

Community News St Saviour’s Church Auckley Strawberry Tea 6 July 2014 It was a full house for the Songs of Praise and Strawberry Tea on Sunday held in Auckley Parish Centre. It was lovely to see everyone and to share an afternoon of favourite hymn singing, time spent with friends old and new, and a delicious tea. Together we raised £730 for church funds. We enjoyed our Curate Louise’s vicar jokes (mostly!) and were also pleased to be able to share her and Paul’s first wedding anniversary. Well done Ann Hagan for once again organising and masterminding a great strawberry tea. We pass on thanks to everyone who helped, and supported the day, in whatever way, supplying food and prizes, working in the kitchen and giving time. We look forward to a repeat in 2015. All welcome.
FINNINGLEY WI In July we had a visit from a local animal sanctuary and were told about the varied work that they do in our community. August sees us taking a summer break and then in September two of our members will be showing off their skills at card making. Maybe we’ll get some early ideas for Christmas! If you would like to visit us and see what the WI has to offer, we meet at 7.15pm in the village hall on the 3rd Thursday of the month.

The music at each recital is a fascinating blend of ancient and modern, featuring particularly wellknown and popular pieces contrasting with standard organ repertoire and works of greater historic significance. Dr Lindley is one of Britain’s most popular concert organists. Over the course of the three summers since 2011, TOCCATA TUESDAYS has visited some of the finest churches in the locality and raised over £6,000 for Doncaster Choral Society funds. Dr Lindley says: I am really thrilled, once again, to be able to give a further series of concerts in support of the great work undertaken each season by the enthusiastic and committed members of Doncaster Choral Society. The Doncaster Choir is one of the jewels in Yorkshire’s musical crown and it is a real pleasure, as well as a privilege, to be able to work with these wonderful singers on a regular basis in rehearsal and concert. The Society deserves all the support that can be mustered to assist it in its laudable endeavours.

Hayfield School Prom The sun didn't the Year 11’s down this year as pupils from Hayfield School found a red carpet awaiting their arrival to the school Prom. The girls, all looking amazing, were given a rose and the boys, (looking equally as handsome) a carnation button hole at the reception on the new school patio. Pupils were then entertained by a disco with fireworks to end a perfect evening.

How your support helps injured soldiers like Clive Sapper Clive Smith was part of a team searching for IEDs in Afganistan, when one exploded right in front of him. Miraculously, he survived. But the blast robbed him of both his legs. For Clive, the road to recovery has been a long one. But one thing that has been a huge help to him has been the Battle Back Centre (Lilleshall) - which is in part funded by people like you. At this state of the art centre, injured Service Personnel can participate in sports and activities like wheelchair basket ball—a sport Clive has come to love. Clive says, ‘taking part in activities like wheelchair basketball, rock climbing and bowling was great fun and really encouraged me to focus on what I could do as opposed to what I couldn’t do after injury. This positive outlook has really helped in all parts of my life.’

Reaching for the Stars
Bawtry Air Cadets (2008 Squadron) has shone once again not just in the community but further “battle” grounds. Sgt Clark is now our very own Qualified Aerospace Instructor after many months of attending weekend courses at RAF Linton on Ouse. Sgt Clark has diligently attended the Instructors Course while practising to become a champion Flight Simulator expert at 2008 Sqn. Flt Sgt Heppinstall has made us proud to become another cadet at Bawtry Sqn to be made a Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet. We are proud that she still holding our squadrons name very high. “Well done Flt Sgt Heppinstall, we are all very proud of you and your achievement” says Plt Off Roets, the adjutant at the squadron. Plt Off Roets says that the cadets, as a unit, excelled at the Wing Training Day held at RAF Linton on Ouse on the 11 May. Out of 30 squadrons, Bawtry took home many awards by taking 1st place for the Banner Drill and 4th place for the Drill competitions. CWO Allen has done a fine job with his precision drill methods. CI Shipton-Knight has spent many hours and weekends helping the 4 cadets in building stunning aero models representing D Day. Sgt Thompson came first in Class C with her beautiful replica of the Halifax Bomber, while in Class B Cdt Judge obtained 2nd place with his Douglas Dakota and Cdt V Roets came 3rd with his Beaufighter. In Class A, Cdt R Roets recieved 1st place with his P51 Mustang. All their hard work paid off and made CI Shipton-Knight very proud. CI Judge, our training officer, has pushed the BTEC diplomas side of business and 4 of our cadets achieved their BTEC’s in Public Services. They are Flt Sgt Bramhall, Sgt Thompson, Sgt Boyce and Cdt Taylor. These academic achievements gives the cadets an added advantage when applying for jobs as this certificate is well recognised. Plt Off Roets says “Bawtry Sqn stands as a lighthouse in the Bawtry area when we see so much camaraderie amongst the cadets while they build character and respect.” Park Road, Bawtry, DN10 6RR e:mail 2008@aircadets.org for more details.

Retired?
If you retired recently, or not so recently, and you haven’t heard of Doncaster U3A then read on. Doncaster University of the Third Age (U3A) offers a wide variety of groups who meet regularly to learn and socialise. There are over thirty groups with more starting all the time. For example, there is Travel and Theatre, French, Coffee Quiz, Writers, Criminology, Striders, Bridge and History, to list a sample. See the Philosophy group, pictured right – in action! Members bring their hobbies or pastimes to the organisation and offer to share them with others who either have the same interest or would like to learn more. Alternatively members can join one or more existing groups to try something new or revive an old hobby. There is a monthly General Meeting with a Guest Speaker, giving you an opportunity to sit back and listen. “I heard about U3A through a friend and have loved it since” Anne. “I like being involved with other people and I have been able to learn new things” David. “I missed working and U3A has given me opportunities to socialise as well as keep my brain active” Sheila. AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER August/September 2014 Casual Vacancy on Auckley Parish Council A vacancy has arisen on the Council, following the resignation of Mr. J. Fletcher. As no request has been made for the vacancy to be filled by a Poll, the Parish Council will fill the vacancy by co-option at its meeting on Wednesday, 10 September 2014. Notices have been posted around the village advising that any eligible person wishing to be considered for co-option should write to the Clerk, to be received no later than noon on Wednesday, 10 September 2014. The person filling the casual vacancy will retire from office at the time when the councillor whose place he or she will fill would ordinarily have retired, i.e. May 2015. Clerk: Mrs. M. Caygill, 10 Ellers Lane, Auckley, Doncaster. DN9 3HZ Superfast Fibre Broadband Local residents frequently complain of experiencing poor and slow broadband reception in Auckley and the surrounding areas. The Openreach BT web site shows that many parts of the country have now been supplied with Superfast Fibre Broadband, but Auckley has not as yet been included in the scheme. The local telephone exchange is currently being evaluated as part of a Government programme and, if enough residents show an interest in the new Broadband service, this might help to accelerate the introduction of the service. To register an expression of interest log on to: www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/expression-gen.aspx Senior Citizens’ Outing The outing to Scarborough on 10th June proved popular, and the event was blessed with good weather. Scarborough was named as the most popular venue by a majority of the passengers who attended the outing.

A stranger is just a friend we haven’t met yet Mystery shoppers and mystery diners are people employed by research companies to go into shops, restaurants and pubs posing as normal customers but whilst they are there they assess the company on things such as customer service and quality of product. The people working in the shop are being assessed without realising it, which may seem a little unfair but the point is that the research company gets an accurate impression of what it's really like to shop or dine at the establishment. If you think of all the preparation that goes on prior to a royal visit I often wonder what it would be like if The Queen simply turned up unannounced to see real people doing their real jobs. I'm sure this would give her a much clearer impression of what the country is actually like instead of the sanitised version she now gets to see. Churches have their own version of the mystery shopper called the mystery worshipper. Reporting back to the 'Ship of Fools' website they come along to a church service and they look at things like how easy the service is to follow, how welcome they are made to feel and how comfortable the church is. Their write up is then posted on the website for the world to see. I think this is an excellent idea as what it boils down to is asking are our churches exercising hospitality? Hospitality is something which British people in particular may find a little difficult. It might involve us talking to someone we don't know or being in a situation which could be classed as socially awkward and yet being hospitable and welcoming is something all churches are called to be. St Benedict in the 4th Century included practising hospitality as one of the things that everyone leading the Christian life should do. This included being hospitable to the people we live alongside whom we already know as well as welcoming in strangers. He reminded his monastic communities often that the Bible teaches us that Jesus Christ dwells in all people so whatever we do for our fellow humans we do for Christ himself. Our villages, churches and homes should be places of welcome and community. This does not mean that we have to make sure the place is always neat and tidy and have the best tablecloth on just in case people pop round. It's more about simply being there for people and perhaps doing what comes naturally to us as a nation and putting the kettle on to brew up.
