Welcome to the June Issue of the Congratulations to the winners of last month’s Arrow competition for tickets to see Status Quo at Doncaster Racecourse. The lucky winners were Steve Naylor from Sprotbrough and Karen Moore from Epworth. We had a fantastic response and would like to thank everyone who entered. This months magazine has information on all our local Summer Fayres as well as an update from the Auckley Show. There is also a questionnaire Cantley with Branton Parish Council would like you to complete with regards to your views on the possibility of increasing the size of the main hall at Kilham Hall. The deadline for the July issue for advertising and articles is Wednesday 18th June. The July Arrow will be delivered the last weekend in June.

Best Wishes

Kilham Hall News A reminder to everyone going on the Kilham Hall outing that the date is Tuesday June 3rd. Kilham Hall committee has booked the coach which will be leaving from Kilham Hall at 10am sharp. The coach will be heading to Castle Howard stately home where there will be time to browse the Garden Centre and Shop and make a few purchases. Hopefully the weather will be pleasant enough to enjoy a stroll through the Grounds before heading onwards to our restaurant and fish and chip lunch. This outing is a new venture for Kilham Hall committee to organise and first refusal has been to those members of the Tuesday morning coffee club before opening it to members of the Branton community. There has been an enthusiastic response and hopefully it will be an enjoyable day for all those on the trip. A reminder, however, that there will be no Tuesday Coffee Club on the 3rd June! Although a distant memory now, the Easter Coffee Morning was a huge success and the annual Easter Bonnet Parade went very well and the hot cross buns were enjoyed by all!

4

An early reminder to the members of the Tuesday Coffee Club that the final session before the summer recess will be on Tuesday 15th July and the Club will reopen on Tuesday 2nd September. Don't forget to check out the weekly activities ongoing at the Hall and to check the Arrow for any special events which may be taking place in the Hall. Best wishes Kilham Hall committee

Year 4 Dance and Drumming Workshop In class 4 we were lucky enough to have a visit from Satnam Singh, a traditional Indian drummer. He told us all about the origins of Indian drumming and how they now use it as part of celebrations. He demonstrated some fantastic drumming (his fingers were so fast they disappeared) and we even had a go ourselves, but we weren’t quite as quick! Jubilate Easter Assemblies As part of our whole school Easter activities children, parents and the congregation at St Wilfrid’s Church were invited to a series of three assemblies presented by our school worship group. These took place on 7th, 8th and 9th April and were very well attended. Children re-told the Easter Story through drama and song in what was a very moving performance. Class 1’s Trip to The Deep On Tuesday 6th May, Class 1 went to The Deep in Hull to learn more about sea creatures for our ‘Under the Sea’ topic. It was very exciting! First, we had a classroom activity to do with a teacher from The Deep-we had to help Auntie Explora find her lost treasure and help the teacher write a story about it. After that, we went to look at all the wonderful sea creatures, including different types of sharks, fish, stingrays and jellyfish! Later on, we watched a film about penguins then went to see them in their penguin pool! They were really interesting. Finally, we all got goodie bags to remember our day at The Deep. We learnt lots about sea creatures and we are enjoying our topic.

June 2014 Newsletter Annual Parish Council Meeting Councillor Jennifer Worthington and Councillor Gillian Warrender were re-elected as Chair and Vice-Chair respectively at the annual parish council meeting on 7 May 2014. The details of the council members can be found on the parish council website www.cantleywithbrantonparish.co.uk or on the parish council notice boards.

Proposed Conversion of Changing Rooms to a Meeting Room In order to facilitate an extension to the main hall at Kilham Hall consideration is being given to converting the Changing Room building (which has been unused since 2009) to a meeting room. The parish council would like to receive the views of residents and particularly users of Kiham Hall as to the benefits of the proposal. Please complete the form on the opposite page or one in the Post Office or at Kilham Hall.

Provision of a Zebra Crossing on Doncaster Road The parish council are continuing to campaign for a zebra crossing on Doncaster Road and it is hoped that funding from the Woodlands Walk development or a separate donation from David Wilson Homes will be made available to enable Doncaster Council to determine whether a zebra crossing can be provided.

Village Sports Fun Day – Sunday 10 August 2014 Residents are asked to give their support to the above event organised by local residents at Kilham Lane Recreation Ground in aid of cancer research.

Reporting of Concerns to Doncaster Council Whilst the parish council is always available to listen to and initiate any action required in respect of concerns raised by residents in most cases raising the matter directly with DMBC by ringing 01302 736000 can prompt a quicker response particularly if a number of complaints are raised.

www.cantleywithbrantonparish.co.uk CONSULTATION ON A PROPOSAL TO CONVERT THE CHANGING ROOM BUILDING AT KILHAM LANE RECREATION GROUND TO A MEETING ROOM Background:

The Changing Rooms have been unused since 2009 as the football team has found alternative facilities and has indicated it does not wish to resume usage of the changing room building If a separate meeting room was created it would enable the current meeting room to be incorporated into the main hall creating a larger hall for activities and increasing its availability. In order for the project to be completed it is likely that external funding will need to be sought and a successful bid will be dependent on sufficient support from the community. We have been advised that the cost will not be excessive as there are no external modifications to the building.

Your views are therefore sought on the following: 1. Do you believe the proposal would be in the best interests of the community? YES / NO (delete as applicable) 2. What activities would you like to see take place or would support if the hall were extended? _______________________________________________________________ NAME: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ADDRESS:----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Responses can be left at Branton Post Office or sent to the Clerk to the Council at the address below.

Auckley Parish Council Newsletter May/June 2014 Annual Parish Council Meeting Held 14 May 2014 Mrs. Jennifer Worthington was re-elected to the office of Chairperson Mr. Stephen Featherstone was re-elected to the office of Vice Chairman School Lane, Auckley Two improvements will hopefully reduce congestion and improve road safety outside the Auckley Junior and Infants School. These are the introduction of a 20 mph speed limit on School Lane, and the provision of a new car park to accommodate parents of children who attend the school, thus reducing the number of vehicles parked on the road adjacent to the school. Dumping of Garden Rubbish There is an ongoing problem relating to garden rubbish being dumped in the wooded copse to the rear of The Hollows Estate. The material is not only unsightly and a detriment to the amenity, but may harbour pests and be a health hazard. Fly tipping is illegal and a fixed penalty of ÂŁ75 can be issued for this offence. Collection of Scrap Metal The Police advise that operators collecting domestic scrap metal must now give receipts for any metal they take away from properties. If collectors are not issuing receipts, members of the public are urged to note the registration number of the vehicle concerned and ring the Police on 101. Fouling of Paths Public Footpath No. 1 leading from Hurst Lane to Dursley Court (to the rear of Main Street properties) has been severely contaminated as a result of dogs being allowed to foul the path. Public rights of way are not excluded from the dog fouling regulations, and offenders will be fined. The majority of owners are responsible and pick up after their dogs, but a few sadly are not willing to adhere to the rules.

News From Auckley School

Year 1 visited Sandall Beat Wood to support learning in their Dens and Dandelions topic. We worked well as a team and built two big shelters that we could all sit in. We were then taught how to use square knots to build a smaller shelter for our groups. In the afternoon we used leaves to get creative, making ghosts, wreaths and head dresses. We all had a superb time and enjoyed the woods immensely.

For their topic ‘Gods and Gladiators’, Year 4 were transported back in time and became Roman soldiers for the day. Everyone made a brilliant effort with their costumes and some even made their own! The class had to be very serious and fill out application forms to join the Roman army but thankfully they all made it. After learning all about their roles, the children then designed and made their own shields which they used to create the famous tortoise. It was important that they could defend themselves as Master Centurion Collins and Cooper threw foam javelins at them to see how well they had formed their tortoise. It was great fun! Once the children had mastered their defence skills they had to learn how to march like true Roman soldiers; they were absolutely brilliant but exhausted by the end of the day. Overall it was a really enjoyable and memorable experience, so much so that some children are still talking about it now. ‘It was the best day ever and I really enjoyed making the shields and using them to dodge the javelins.’ Eve Needham ‘What a fantastic day! I loved forming the tortoise but it was a bit tricky. I was really happy but so tired by the time I got home.’ Conagh Oakley ‘I enjoyed being a Roman soldier so much that I wish that I could travel back in time to join the Roman army!’ Caden Morris

Look Up!

There’s a very popular film clip on the internet at the moment called ‘Look Up’ by Gary Turk. It’s a great observation on how technology, mobile phones, Facebook, Twitter, etc. have taken over our lives. Maybe you aren’t interested in them, but I suspect we all have family members who are. It’s worth a read or watch on YouTube, and it really makes you think. It’s quite long so I’ve just included a few verses. I have 422 friends, yet I am lonely. I speak to all of them every day, yet none of them really know me. The problem I have sits in the spaces between Looking into their eyes, or at a name on a screen. I took a step back and opened my eyes, I looked around and realised That this media we call social is anything but. When we open our computers and it's our doors we shut All this technology we have, it's just an illusion Community companionship, a sense of inclusion Yet when you step away from this device of delusion You awaken to see a world of confusion. We edit and exaggerate, crave adulation We pretend not to notice the social isolation We put our words into order and tint our lives a-glistening We don't even know if anyone is listening We're surrounded by children, who since they were born, Have watched us living like robots, who now think it's the norm. It's not very likely you'll make world's greatest dad, If you can't entertain a child without using an iPad When I was a child, I'd never be home Be out with my friends, on our bikes we'd roam I'd wear holes on my trainers, and graze up my knees We'd build our own clubhouse, high up in the trees Now the park's so quiet, it gives me a chill See no children outside and the swings hanging still. There's no skipping, no hopscotch, no church and no steeple We're a generation of idiots, smart phones and dumb people. So don't give into a life where you follow the hype Give people your love, don't give them your 'like' Disconnect from the need to be heard and defined Go out into the world, leave distractions behind. Food for thought? Blessings. Neil Revd. Neil Redeyoff St Saviour's, Auckley & St Oswald's & Holy Trinity, Finningley
