News, News, News, News, News, News... Kilham Hall News As you read this, Easter weekend will have been and gone as will the Tuesday Easter Coffee Morning. I'm sure the Coffee Morning will have been a great success but news on that will be in next month's edition of the Arrow. Our weekly activities are all in full swing but new members are always welcome so check the back of the Arrow for details. Weekend party bookings are also very healthy and bookings continue to be taken well in advance so don't delay if you have a celebration coming up and you are hoping to book Kilham Hall! Following the heavy gales of December, some of Kilham Hall's roof tiles were damaged but they have now been repaired and restored to their rightful position. Kilham Hall committee meets once every two months and the maintenance of the Hall is always on each Agenda, its upkeep being the main priority of the committee. Chris, the Hall's caretaker, does a great job in ensuring that the Hall is always in tiptop condition and much of the general maintenance is in his good hands, for which we are very grateful. Committee also oversees the weekly activities and organises the Tuesday Coffee Club. Thanks go to Jean Cheetham, Sheila Smith, Noreen Pearson and Janet Goodband, in particular, for turning out early every Tuesday morning and for running the Tuesday morning activities. Membership has burgeoned over the past six months and each Tuesday has become more akin to a family gathering. The age of members is 60 through to 90+ but the Coffee Club is open to all! Best wishes Kilham Hall Committee

FINNINGLEY WI At our meeting in April we enjoyed a demonstration of jewellery making and were able to have a go at some simple items ourselves. This month is our WI’s birthday and we will celebrate with supper and our speaker will be an antiques expert. Coming up in June we will be having a visit from a local beekeeper. If any of these items interest you, come along to our meeting which is held in the village hall on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7.15pm or call Jayne on 01302 772539. It was a most successful afternoon, making a total of £687.81. Many strangers who came volunteered immediately on arrival to help on the stalls. Anyone is most welcome to come along & find out what we do to help those affected by Parkinson’s. If you would like any more information, please contact: Sylvia James Tel: (01302)533142

Hayfield lane Primary School News Hayfield Lane pupils attend university

As a reward for following the Golden Rules each week, pupils at Hayfield Lane will now be attending university every Friday afternoon. University courses on offer include health and beauty, catering, arts and crafts and media. From now on, the media group will be writing this article for the Auckley Arrow, as well as making their own radio programme. This week we are focusing on Key Stage 2. We hope you enjoy reading our news!

Y4 Science, Soils and Rocks

Hawks have learned about rocks and soils. The main rocks we have been learning about are metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous. We also studied a different type of rock such as Stone Age spear heads and magma (volcanic larva). Hawks have much en-

joyed learning about this and can’t wait for our next science lesson!

Y5 Trip to Magna

On Thursday the 13th March 2014 Kestrel class visited Magna science and adventure centre. First thing in the day we experienced the workshop. In the workshop, we experimented with rocket fuel; we made paint; we made clouds in a bottle and learnt about chain reactions. This day was jam packed with amazing scenes such as the Air, Fire, Water and Earth pavilions. Later in the day we witnessed the Big Melt (did you know: 1 month’s worth of steel was equivalent to 30 double Decker buses?) showing what it was like back in the day.

Y6 PE Gymnastics

For the past few weeks the Eagle class (Yr 6) have been doing...Gymnastics. Jak from eagles quoted, “I have always wanted to learn gymnastics. I was positively exuberant when they said we were doing it.” Eagles used our PE equipment to make a track (Four mats on one side of four ‘high benches’ and four mats on the other.). Then we got into groups of six, lined up and sat down behind each bench. Then, one-by-one, we stood up and went onto the high bench and performed a jump of our choice Eagles could choose out of: star, straddle, pike, wolf, 180 degrees, 360 degrees and straight jump. After a few jumps we made a sequence of three jumps. (One jump on the first mat, one on top of the podium and then one off it.).

News from St Oswald’s Finningley In the past few weeks, the children have been experiencing a lot of new things - in and out of school.

The younger members of the school have had fun at Cannon Hall Farm meeting and greeting all kinds of animals and also welcoming spring’s new-born lambs and piglets onto the farm. The children also got to pet smaller creatures as such rabbits and guinea pigs. The Year 4 students have been busy, busy, busy with their class topics. They leant all about Sikhism and enjoyed creating and tasting Asian cuisine. They have also been studying the Victorian era which included spending the day as Victorian children at school. This involved dressing up in costume and having their teachers and classroom assistants treat them as strict Victorian school teachers would have acted in the “olden days”. Their project ended with a fantastic trip to the National Coal Mining Museum of England near Wakefield. They learnt about how mining was done and how conditions have changed. They had the chance to learn about how children were expected to work in the mines from a very young age.

16

Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

To top it all off the children went 140 metres underground to see the real thing. Kitted out in hard hats and battery lamps the children were shown the realities of coal mining through the ages. It was a very exciting and enlightening experience - it’s not every day you “go down pit”.It’s been a fun time for all the children of St Oswald’s this term. As a prize for being the regional winners of the ‘Big Pedal Challenge’ 2014, the last day of term was one of stunts and tricks performed by BMX stunt cyclist Josh Briars, who went on to teach some of the children a few tricks of their own. Easter, of course, is a very important date in the school’s calendar and both staff and pupils have been working hard towards the “Easter Act of Worship” assembly. Everything from acting out the story of the Crucifixion, along with Easter music and songs to the miniature Easter gardens made by Key Stage 2 children. Head teacher Mr Hall praised all the children’s effort’s and called it “a brilliant end to the schools term”.

News From Auckley School AUCKLEY’S GOT TALENT

A packed audience was treated to the talents of the pupils of Auckley School last month when children aged from 6 to 11 showcased their singing skills. After preliminary auditions in school, 11 acts performed to parents and friends, singing their favourite songs from their favourite artists. The staff, looking very glamorous, entertained the crowd with their routine whilst the judges had the difficult job of choosing the winners. Maddy Scales aced first place singing Set Fire to the Rain by Adele, Libby Reynolds and Isla Barlow came second singing When I Grow Up from Matilda the Musical and third place went to 6 year olds, Paige Gillon, Holly Snowden and Darcy Tune singing Best song Ever by One Direction. All 20 children showed how confident they were to take the stage in front of a crowd and made their families very proud. Some are already planning what to sing in next year’s event!

Look At What You Could Have Won

I do like is a good television quiz show. There are so many of them to choose from! I love shouting out the answers and I definitely think if you can’t be right you should be wrong at the top of your voice. I like Mastermind for its mixture of specialist subject and general knowledge questions; I enjoy The Chase for its tension; and I like Pointless for its acknowledgement of the obscure. (Incidentally I’m always particularly Revd Neil Redeyoff and Revd Louise Tinniswood pleased with myself if I get even one question right on University Challenge). As well as the questions of course there’s the prizes. I don’t know if you remember the quiz show Bullseye but if my memory serves me correctly their prizes were an eclectic mix of things from a collection of encyclopaedias to speedboats. Quiz shows these days however are all about money. Rarely today are contestants competing for toasters and duvet covers a la Blankety Blank. Indeed with shows such as Who Wants To Be A Millionaire it seems that there’s big money to be made by storing a decent amount of trivia in your brain. What baffles me however is why do the audience always applaud the money? When Alexander Armstrong announces the prize fund for that day the audience always bursts into a ‘spontaneous’ round of applause. One of the most misquoted Bible passages comes from 1 Timothy. People mistakenly think that verse 10 says ‘Money is the root of all evil’ when in fact it actually says is ‘The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.’ Overall the Bible teaches generosity with the money we have and encourages good stewardship. What it doesn’t condone is the storing up of riches and frivolous extravagance - although I’m not sure that’s clear in some of our more sumptuous churches. It’s interesting that we now live in a country that raises millions of pounds for people in need through charities such as Comic Relief but also sees money as something to be applauded as a prize. We idolize footballers and yet the wages of nurses, paramedics and fire fighters are constantly squeezed. And don’t even get me started on bankers and MPs bonuses. Apparently money management is going to be part of the school curriculum in the near future I only hope that future generations are going to be taught how to manage money and not how to allow money to manage them. Revd. Louise Tinniswood St Saviour’s, Auckley and St Oswald’s & Holy Trinity, Finningley
