Welcome

to the April issue of the

Branton & Auckley Arrow The nights are getting lighter and the weather has been somewhat brighter lately, what an exciting time of year this is, full of the promise of bright sunny mornings that fill us with motivation for the day and warm hazy evenings full of exercise, dog walks and alfresco dining. Not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but however you spend your late spring/summer evenings, it’s so much nicer with milder temperatures and light. Plans are starting for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this June. We have an additional bank holiday this year so we now have 2nd and 3rd of June as bank holidays giving us a long weekend of celebrations. Each village has their own plans and I understand the parish of Cantley with Branton are organising a scarecrow competition. More information in this month Arrow. If you want to get involved or have ideas, please share them with your Parish Council. The May issue deadline is Wednesday 13th April. The magazines will be delivered the last full weekend in April. Happy Easter Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

PLEASE AVOID LEAVING FOOD IN WOODS FOR WILDLIFE Although this is likely done with the best of intentions, leaving food out can cause serious problems for dogs and other animals. A local Labrador in Branton had a serious reaction to food he found in the woods behind the Poppyfield Estate in Branton. As an owner, you can’t be sure what they have eaten and what harm has been caused until it’s too late. This dog became very poorly and ended up having his tummy pumped. He luckily survived the ordeal, however the owners, although relieved he was ok, were presented with a costly vet bill. DMBC have also advised that leaving food out is fly tipping and you can also be fined. So please be careful and keep our woods a safe place for our four legged friends.

Can't praise Matt's work enough. He fitted a kitchen for us about 12 months ago and we were so impressed we invited him back to panel our staircase and landing. We were not disappointed. His attention to detail is second to none. Matt is a true perfectionist and we would highly recommend his excellent skills to anyone.

Finningley Parish Council April Newsletter Budget Council decided that it would not increase its precept for the 2022-23 year. Planned expenditure is actually above this level but Council has decided that it will use its reserves to meet this cost. We are able to do this as our reserves are currently well in excess of the recommended level, a point raised by our external Auditor.

Village Enhancements There is considerable frustration in Council that we have not been able to make progress with the pond area redevelopment. This is due to our architect not being able to get suitable quotes from contractors, a problem many developers are experiencing. We will continue to work towards this project. Meanwhile we have attended to the ivy that has been growing on the barn wall adjacent to the Village Hall and will be replacing the fencing surrounding the grassed area. We will also shortly be painting the exterior of the hall.

Platinum Jubilee

Council has agreed that we should join in the celebrations for this unique event on Sunday 5th June. We have set up a small sub committee to meet with other interested groups in the village to organise an event on the village playing fields for this day. They are keen to hear of any ideas anyone might have to mark this event. Please send your thoughts to our Clerk at finningleypc@gmail.com

The whole world has been watching in horror at the unfolding events in the Ukraine. As a school we wanted to help so we contacted South Axholme Academy to see if we could help with their campaign. On Monday 7th March the children wore their own clothes in return for donating an item to the appeal. We were absolutely overwhelmed by the kindness of our families and community as child after child dropped off bag after bag in our school hall. Misson Mill Donation and Sort Point were phenomenal with the amounts they donated to us. One student even took the time to write a short note, ‘To whoever may receive this gift in Ukraine. Just know we are thinking about you x No War Peace’ This small, but emotional gesture and act of kindness gave Neil at the Sort Point an inspirational idea. In the near future our children will now be taking time out of their day to write short letters to the children of Ukraine so they can show their support through words and drawings.

BRANTON COFFEE CLUB NEWS

Vi Ward

Jean Cheatham

Branton Coffee Club celebrated two amazing achievements in March. Vi Ward turned 102 years young and holds the record of being the clubs oldest member. Vi who lives in Branton has been a member of the club since the hall was built back in 2009 and keeps her self busy baking and enjoys a good book. Happy Birthday Vi, you look incredible. Jean Cheatham, who is 96 this year, is retiring from the coffee club. Jean has been an active member of the club since it was formed and was part of the first Kilham hall Management committee which was set up in 2009 to look after Kilham Hall. The coffee club wish to thank Jean for everything she has done over the years and hope to still see her at future club events. Kilham Hall Management Committee wish to send there very best wishes for the future and to thank Jean for everything she has done over the years for the benefit of the community in Branton and beyond. The coffee club members have been busy knitting and crocheting red and purple poppies for display in the village this November. Margaret Sidebottom, a new coffee club member, started knitting them last November and with the help of Cantley with Branton Parish Council, hope to create something special in remembrance of all the men, woman and animals that served and have fallen for our country. If anyone would like to help, please contact the coffee club or email the parish council clerk, Bev Walton who can send you a pattern. cwbpc@outlook.com

BRANTON ST WILFRID’S PRIMARY SCHOOL World Book Day 2022 On Thursday 3rd March, we celebrated World Book Day at Branton St Wilfrid’s, and were blown away with the amazing and imaginative costumes the children came in. We also challenged the children to make a Diarama of their favourite book, and the creativeness of some of the pieces astounded us!

Ukraine Appeal In light of the hostilities in Ukraine, many children, staff and parents in our community understandably wanted to get involved in fund raising. After promoting on Facebook that we were collecting and dropping off at a site in Doncaster with trucks bound for Poland, we were inundated with such a generous amount of donations. From clothes, food, toiletries, blankets and sleeping bags to pet food, collars and leads, the amount we received was staggering, not only from families in our local community but from all over Doncaster. One gentleman even came all the way from Glossop to contribute! The pictures are testament to how a community can pull together when necessary, and shows how people have taken this crisis to heart.
