We are so lucky to live in villages who really capture the essence of this special time of year with events planned throughout late November and December. From Christmas fayres, lights being switched on, carol singing and so much more, there is a lot to look forward to this Christmas. All dates can be found in this month s Arrow.
If you have any special photos from the festive community events you attend over the coming month, please send them to me and I will share them in the January issue. I would like to dedicate this Christmas issue to the amazing Arrow delivery team who work hard each month, regardless of the weather, to ensure your magazine is delivered on time.
The January issue deadline is Wednesday 7th December The Arrow will be delivered before 1st January.

Cantley with Branton Parish Council have organised a Christmas carol singing event on Doncaster Road, next to the Three Horseshoes public house in Branton. The Armthorpe Elmfield Brass Band will provide the music and mince pies, provided by the Cantley with Branton WI and sweets for the children will be served on the evening. Would be lovely to see you there.
On Saturday 12th November the litter pick group met at Kilham Hall in Branton to start our quarterly liter pick event. It was great to see some new faces and the weather was very kind for November. We collected 25 bags of rubbish and were finished by 11am.
Huge thanks to all of the volunteers and to Kate Chorlton for using her car to pick up all the rubbish en route. The next Litter Pick will be held in February so watch this space for the date.
Our regular meetings are held in the village hall at 7.15pm on the 3rd Thursday of the month and we have a varied programme of speakers and activities for the coming months. Pay us a visit, guests are always welcome and you might even get homemade cake.
For more information give Jayne a call on 01427 431060, follow us on Facebook or visit www.finningleywomensinstitute.yolasite.com

Inspired by our Auckley Neighbours poppy display last year, my mother in law, Margaret Sidebottom, said she would like to knit some poppies for a display in Branton and got to work straight away.
I mentioned the work she was doing at our monthly Parish Council meeting and all members agreed it would be a good idea to get involved with this project. We asked for help from Cantley with Branton WI, Kilham Hall Management Committee, Branton Coffee Club and also requested help from residents via facebook and the Arrow.
The result was terrific, we ended up with over 300 poppies, both red and purple (purple for the animals lost in war), some knitted and some crocheted. A number of us met up to attach the poppies onto a net and our handyman, Steve Maskill, with the help of our clerk Bev Walton, decorated the tree with the fountain of poppies. A huge thank you to everyone who was involved.
We hope you have enjoyed seeing them as you walk or drive through the village and they have given you the opportunity to remember those who gave up their lives for our own.
We intend to complete another for next year so if anyone would like to get involved, the clerk has copies of the pattern, which can be found on Cantley with Branton Parish website www.cantleywithbrantonparish.co.uk or email the clerk cwbpc@outlook.com
The litter pick took place on Saturday 12th November 2022 – huge thank you to all volunteers who took part. A date will be published shortly for the New Year Litter Pick.
The Police Drop In’s were held in October and November but saw few members of the public in attendance. Local residents are invited to express an interest in a new police initiative following a pilot scheme where stronger community engagement is encouraged. Please see the Parish Council’s Facebook page for more details on this scheme. Please email the Clerk to the Parish Council (cwbpc@outlook.com) to express your interest with details so they can be forwarded. Date for the next police ‘Drop In’ session is 20 th December 2022 at 10am – 11am at Beth’s of Branton within Hagan’s Nurseries (Branton Garden Centre).
The new brick build storage extension is now completed at Kilham Hall and makes the building look rather impressive. There are a few snagging issues which will be rectified as soon as possible. Many groups that use the hall on a regular basis will soon be making use of the new storage facilities.
The Parish Council would like to express their thanks to the local residents who knitted and crocheted over 300 poppies to enable a display to be installed on the Christmas tree at the top of Whiphill Top Lane/Doncaster Road. Appreciation also goes out to the ladies who attached the poppies to the display. The Parish Council’s Handyman also installed lamppost poppies around the Parish and bunting around Kilham Hall. As always, a wreath was purchased from the Royal British Legion and donated to the Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School and one laid on the remembrance bench at Kilham Hall for quiet reflection.
A new tree was planted and illuminated on the corner of Warning Tongue Lane and Bawtry Road this year to make a lovely addition to the Parish for the festive season.
The Parish Council are holding a carol singing event around the Christmas Tree next to the Three Horseshoes Pub in Branton on Thursday 1st December accompanied by the Armthorpe Elmfield Brass Band. We hope as many members of the Parish, young and old, join us to make this a memorable event like last year. On Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd December Dick Whittington pantomime will show at Kilham Hall, Branton. Organised by Kilham Hall Management Committee and sponsored by the Parish Council.
According to research from Age UK, over one million older people say they go more than a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member. But small acts of kindness can create a big difference. It doesn’t take much time to be a good neighbour - just to check someone is safe, warm and well. Have they got essential supplies like bread and milk or do they need any shopping doing? Even just spending a few minutes having a chat can brighten someone’s day, especially in these hard times
Join us on Friday, 9th December at 7.00 p.m. in St. Mary's Primary School, St. Mary's Road, Tickhill to hear the Rosie Hood Folk Band perform traditional and contemporary folk songs and, as this is our Christmas concert, folk carols from South Yorkshire. Non-members: £12 at the door.
Accompanied children and students (16-19) are admitted free of charge.

Branton resident, Rory Jones (age 7) shook hands with both the King and Queen Consort after waiting for 4 hours with his Grandma Carol Ashbridge. Asked how he felt about the occasion, Rory said ‘I’m quite excited as I have never seen a Monarch before’ adding that this was the best day of his life!

As the leaves begin to fall in the grounds of our school, Autumn is proving to be another busy time at Misson Primary School. All our teaching and support staff went back to the classroom themselves to learn about how they can makethe most from our amazing outside learning area by the leading experts, Alfresco Learning.
Our Reception students enjoyed creating traditional tales in the form of story maps outside before foraging for the best natural items to create autumn pictures.
In RE our year 1 and 2 children learnt about Diwali, and had the opportunity to use chalks on the playground and our cable drum tables to draw their very own Diwali lamps while our Key Stage 2 children polished up on their maths skills, using twigs, conkers and leaves. None of us realised how many natural resources we have in and around school until we have been exposed to the outside learning concept and the huge benefits it provides for our children.
Since opening the outside classroom we have had so many different types of bird visit our bird feeders, but this week we had our very first guest into our hedgehog hotel. After discovering this small, cheeky, spikey mammal in a hole which had been dug for our new playground, we carefully moved him into the luxury accommodation for the evening while he regained his strength. Thankfully he recovered well and made his way back into his natural environment all by himself.
The Parish Council laid its annual wreath at the War Memorial in Blaxton as part of the Remembrance Service, marking their respect for the fallen. The Council would like to thank residents and retailers who produced displays throughout the village. Planning Applications Webpage
The Parish Council have added a Planning Applications page to their website: www.auckleyparish.co.uk. The new page lists current planning applications from the Auckley Parish allowing them all to be viewed in one place. The information is being provided as information is no longer viewable on lamp posts. Further information and details about applications can then be obtained from Doncaster Council.
Help is needed- both the South Yorkshire Heritage List and national Heritage List require help to obtain information. The South Yorkshire Heritage List lists ‘heritage assets that are valued as contributing to the distinctiveness and history of South Yorkshire but that are not protected by statutory national designations’. They require any information about the old married quarters e.g. when they were built, who by, what designs and materials were used, what ranks lived where etc.
Information is also sought about the hangars and runway, along the same lines. Please email ronnie.dobson@hotmail.com with any information. All information will gratefully be received.
The Parish Council are organising a Carol Service outside the Eagle & Child on Tuesday 13th of December from 7pm. Live music to accompany the singing will be provided by Armthorpe Elmfield band.
To contact the Clerk to Auckley Parish Council (Emma Lear), please email clerk@auckleyparishcouncil.gov.uk or call 07857 568268.
The Cantley Community Library Christmas Fayre is scheduled to be on the morning of Saturday 10th December between 9.30 and 12.00. All are welcome and there will be Refreshments, Tombola, Raffle, Guess the weight of the cake, Jigsaw Sale, Knit & Natter stall and much more. We are pleased to confirm that we will be joined by The Tickhill Male Voice Choir who will contribute to the festive activities with Carols. So do come and have a family morning out, get some stocking fillers from the stalls and support your local community library
Cantley Community Library are excited to be nominated for this years Coop Community Fund. Our project is to develop the outside garden into a seating area for the community where we can serve refreshments. So, if you want to support our project and are a member of the Co-op then please select us via our cause profile page is https://membership.coop.co.uk/ causes/67304. If you are not a member of the Co-op but do shop there then please do sign up to be a member and select our project and every time you spend money on Co-op goods you will be raising funds for our new outside seating area We continue to recruit volunteers and have some limited shift availability for library volunteers but recognise that not everyone wants to commit to a regular shift but are keen to get involved with our activities. We have therefore created the post of associate volunteer where people can sign up to get involved in activities from Kids Clubs to Coffee Mornings. By signing up you will be invited to come and help at various times during the year and are able to contribute whatever support you can without committing to regular weekly library duty. For more information contact the library on 01302 535614 or email us at cantleycommunitylibrary@gmail.com for an application form
Activities at the library are continuing. We still have places on the Health & Well Being Workshop on the 17th November and are running drop in sessions for people concerned with possible memory loss on the 19th November. To find out more about these and other activities please do follow the Facebook page at “Cantley Community Library - The Centre@Cantley” where all details will be posted (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1597637983819540/).
Commenting on the plans, Chairman Richard Halstead said “It is great to be nominated for the Co-op Community Fund which will help with our plans for the outside seating area. The post of Associate Volunteer is an exciting development and will complement our existing library volunteer team helping us to put on even more activities for the local community. Finally, we look forward to welcoming as many people as possible to our Christmas Fayre on the 10th December.”
Year 1 have been very busy this term with lots of activities and a History workshop where they explored a variety of toys. In Science, they looked at objects which float and sink and focused on materials that are transparent and opaque by shining a torch to see if light would pass through. In Art, they have practiced colour mixing to produce our versions of Van Gogh's wheat field painting.
On Friday 11th November, our amazing Year 6 children marked Remembrance Day with an incredibly special assembly. They helped the younger children in school to understand the meaning of the poppy and Remembrance Day. They also read prayers, poems and sang beautifully as we all ‘Remembered’.
Thank you to those who joined us in our act of remembrance – I am sure everyone would agree how moving the service was.
We were incredibly proud that one of our Year 5 children, Georgina McMillan was chosen to represent the children of Doncaster as a Primary Ambassador. One of her first duties was to meet the King and Queen Consort on their recent visit to Doncaster!!
To say it was raining when 6 of us met at the Park and Ride would be something of an understatement. But undaunted we set off to do a walk that promised to throw new light on some (for me) very familiar territory.
Down Sheep Bridge Lane we went and after cutting through the housing emerged by the 'Brick Pond' fishing pond. From there it was on into the woodland behind more housing where Kathryn showed us a series of heads carved into some of the trees by a local resident. Apparently there are over 20 of them; but they take some finding. An underpass took us under the Great Yorkshire Way and then we reached the bottom end of the new housing development that is Warren Park. Thankfully by this time the rain had eased and the skies were beginning to brighten.
Over the main road at the top of the slope, down the path, over the railway and we were in Hatchell Wood. A refreshment break by the duck pond and then on again through the housing adjoining Warning Tongue Lane and across the road to Hayfield fishing lakes. By now the sun was out and we began to think we should have started the walk 2 hours later.
Back to cars via the old road to the fishing lakes; now almost overgrown and reclaimed by mother nature. Thanks to Kathryn for devising and leading the walk. Those who perhaps didn't come because of the weather missed a treat. Charlie Pratt. P.S. Sure we will do it again next year.
Please visit our website https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest information, including future activity.
