December issue of

Branton & Auckley Arrow As we prepare to say good bye to 2021 it’s great to see the Arrow packed once more with our usual Christmas events and some new ones too. How lovely it is to be able to enjoy Christmas as we normally would without the restrictions in place this time last year. Hoping everyone continues to keep safe, I have just had my covid booster, and apart from a sore arm for 24 hours, all went well. Whatever your plans are this Christmas, I hope you have a wonderful time with those you love. The January issue deadline is very early due to the Christmas break, please let me have your adverts and community information no later than Wednesday 8th December2021

WINTER 2021 NEWSLETTER Christmas Illuminations Work was commissioned in August 2021 with DMBC for a new electricity box and tree on the junction of Doncaster Road/Whiphill Top Lane and a further electricity box at the Old Cantley roundabout to illuminate two existing trees. At the time of writing, the new tree had been planted and the Parish Council are hopeful the electrical work will be completed by 29th November in time for the illuminations to be installed and switched on, ready for the festive season. These will make a lovely addition to the Parish and plans are in place for additional trees to be sited elsewhere within the Parish in the forthcoming years. Use of Kilham Hall Car Park It has been agreed that the car park will remain open for park users, however when the hall is in use, the car park will be for the hirers use and their guests only. New signage has now been installed to make this clear so car park users are aware of whether they can make use of the car park. The car park will open from 9am until 4pm each day, 7 days per week until March 2022, then extended to 6pm for the light evenings. Remembrance Sunday The Parish Council made a donation to the Royal British Legion and purchased a wreath for Branton St Wilfrid’s School for their Remembrance service. The wreath was then placed at St Wilfrid’s Church, Cantley. A further wreath was donated and placed by our Remembrance bench at Kilham Park. Keeping the Parish of Cantley with Branton Tidy The litter pick took place on Saturday 13th November 2021. 21 volunteers turned up and helped to litter pick in Branton, Old Cantley and the Manor Farm estate. Over 50 bags were collected in total, thank you to everyone who volunteered their time. The Parish Council have applied for a grant to enable it to purchase its own litter picking equipment for future picks. The next litter pick will be in February so look out for the date if you want to get involved. Police ‘Drop-in’ The Police Drop-in for September saw a few members of the public in attendance. Issues raised were regarding speed awareness on Whiphill Top Lane, anti-social behaviour on Kilham Park/Field and smoking of illegal substances around Valley Drive. PCSO’s have been on Whiphill Top Lane recently with speed guns. Local residents can receive training on the use of speed guns to enable more frequent speed checks to be carried out. If anyone is interested please email the Clerk to the Parish Council (cwbpc@outlook.com) with details so they can be forwarded. A drop in took place on 24th November 2021 at Kilham Hall, we will update you in the next newsletter as well as our facebook page on any outcomes. The dates for the next police ‘Drop In’ session are 19th January at 1.30pm, 30th March at 6.30pm and 25th May 2022 at 1.30pm at Kilham Hall Meeting Room.

Can't praise Matt's work enough. He fitted a kitchen for us about 12 months ago and we were so impressed we invited him back to panel our staircase and landing. We were not disappointed. His attention to detail is second to none. Matt is a true perfectionist and we would highly recommend his excellent skills to anyone.

There are always so many things happening at Misson Primary School and this term has been no different. It has been lovely to be able to get back to what we love best, taking our children out into the community. Our pupils have represented us perfectly on numerous school trips and we could not be more proud of each and every one of them. Our older students took part in their very first netball festival and did amazingly well, while we took two teams to a tag rugby tournament at Retford Rugby Club where they showed such determination and team spirit. Our year 3, 4 and 5 classes enjoyed a two day, action packed residential stay at the Austerfield Study Centre, where they experienced pond dipping, resilience and organisation in various team building games before enjoying marshmallow toasting around the camp fire before bedtime. Our year 5 and 6 class had a full day of fun and excavation at the Jorvik Viking Centre while our year 2’s and 3’s were the first school to visit the brand new Bee Garden at Tickhill Road hospital where they took part in a number of activities.

Christmas Carol Singing This event will be held at 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday 14th December under cover at the Eagle and Child car park, Main Street, Auckley. The Armthorpe Elmfield Band will accompany the carol singing.

Resident’s Suggestion for Bike Track An Auckley resident has approached the Council to ask whether it might be possible to provide a bike pump/dirt jumps track at Riverside Park, Auckley, on the grassed area between the basketball court and the River Way access. A jump track is a looping track design with jumps and rollers designed for mountain bikes. Members of Council are prepared to consider this suggestion, subject to funding and local residents’ support. It would therefore be appreciated if residents could please contact the Clerk with their comments on the matter – details below: Clerk Mrs. Marjorie Caygill: Email: marj.caygill@doncaster.co.uk

The Parish Council would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 28

Branton Street party raises £400 for St John’s A social media account set up by a group of Doncaster neighbours during lockdown was the starting point for a massive street party that boosted St John’s Hospice funds by £400. Mark Turner, from Branton’s Poppyfields development started a WhatsApp group to keep in touch, which quickly led to ideas being generated on how to celebrate eventually being lockdown-free. The group decided to stage a street party on a field near their homes on 31st July this year and a committee was formed along with a Just Giving fundraising page to pay for a live singer, disc jockey and other organising costs. Committee member Trish Lee, a Nurse Shift Lead in the Covid Clinic with Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We invited everyone on the estate and their families and on the day around 160 came along, bringing their own chairs to sit on picnics and drinks. Alongside the music there was a lot happening, including lots of fun and games including an obstacle race and quizzes. It was a brilliantly fun day, which started at 2pm and went on until around 10pm, and really brought people together in a carnival atmosphere.” Poppyfields residents were invited to donate towards the cost of running the event if they wanted. “No pressure was put on anyone to contribute but people were really generous and we raised around £1,000. After the bills were paid we rounded up what was left to £400 to give to St John’s, which everyone agreed was a great idea, added local publisher, Michelle Sidebottom, another committee member. “We’re now planning to run a similar event again next year.” Hospice fundraiser Lindsey Richards thanked the Poppyfields residents for their donation, adding: “St John’s supports all of Doncaster’s communities and we are grateful for kind gestures like this, which help to pay for those little extra comforts that make life a little easier for our patients and their families.” Photo above: Tracey Gaughan, from the hospice fundraising team, with Trish and Michelle

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

The villages came out in force to show their respect for those who have served our country and remember those who died for it. Lots of volunteers took part in crocheting to decorate the villages with poppies—if you would like to take part in this for next year, you can find the crochet pattern on the British legion website. Please email me if you plan to take part, my mother in law has started already! Alternatively, you can donate wool, red, black and or purple for the animals. michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk or call 07795387937. Thank you in advance.
